Re: NCAA 2004: Prestige to Challenge

    Notre Dame (2-3) at #16 Houston (4-0)
Despite falling to 35th in the nation, the coach knew Notre Dame posed a very valid threat. Notre Dame's offense took the field first. FS Jake Weese filled in for the injured MLB Jason Mullins. They forced a 3 and out. At the 19 yard line of Notre Dame, Aaron Anderson ran into John Thorburn who was supposed to be blocking and got sacked. It resulted in him hurting his back. They determined back spasms would knock him out for 3 weeks. Adam Varnado made it 3-0. The defense forced a three and out. On the sidelines, the head coach tried to calm his backup quarterback down. On 4th & goal from the 1, John Thorburn rushed it up the gut for 6. Varnado made it 10-0. Cory Cooper had done it. He led a good, consistent drive. UH forced another 3-and-out. Houston had to punt as well but a good punt went out of bounds at the 1 yard line. RB Jenkins broke it for a 99 yard score. 10-7. Unbelievable defense.

HALFTIME: 10-7 - Cooper starts off 10/20 for 119 yards...

Cooper came up big on the first drive of the half on 4th & 7 from the Notre Dame 22. The coach did not want Varnado to give Notre Dame any momentum and Cooper came through in a huge way. They had to try from the 6, however, and Varnado came through making it 13-7. Penalties helped Notre Dame get downfield but a field goal miss kept it 13-7. Cooper quickly handed them the ball with an INT. FS Nix would intercept it back at the 20 yard line. Notre Dame would be allowed one more 3 and out series and the Houston Cougars running game ran out the remaining time by getting first downs.

FINAL: Houston defeats Notre Dame 13-7

    PLAYER of the GAME
There were no standout players, but FS Jake Weese was awarded the honor after getting 3 tackles and 2 sacks.

    SURPRISE of the GAME
The way the defense held together and the way Cory Cooper didn't break under pressure.

    Mentionable Performances
    QB Cory Cooper - 89.8, 19/37, 193 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT

Houston Cougars: 5-0 - Looking powerful while being undefeated...
    Next Game: at Tulane (3-3)

HOUSTON COUGARS: Ranked #14 in the NCAA

    Real Comments
I'm DONE picking goaline formations. They don't work near the endzone, and they ALWAYS give up MASSIVE outside runs. 5-2 formations maybe, but never goaline.

                  TCU (7-1) at #11 Houston (7-0)
TCU got the ball first but was forced to punt. Aaron Anderson was welcome back onto the field by the home crowd. After a long drive, Anderson hooked up with Chance Brown to put Houston ahead 7-0. A 70+ yard touchdown pass tied the game in a matter of seconds. The Houston secondary looked stupid out there. The WR AJ Tucker fumbled the ball away early in the 2nd quarter to give TCU the ball. TCU made a 50 yard field goal to go ahead 10-7. Webster would intercept the ball late in the second quarter to put Houston at TCU's 45. Could Anderson lead them to a score? No... as he got sacked near the goaline, but Varnado did tie it at 10 for halftime. An unbelievable tipped pass turned interception led to Anderson's first turnover all game. He yelled at his tight end after missing his fourth consecutive pass, saying that looked quote- like a "freshman". A 63 yard pass put TCU ahead 17-10. Same old Cougars. Was this really the eleventh-ranked team in the NCAA? As the fourth quarter started, it was 17-10 and Houston was positioned on TCU's 32. With 4:35 left to play, Anderson ran it in from 8 yards out to tie the game 17-17. FS Nix came up huge with an interception to put Houston at the 26 yard line. A 93 yard interception return gave TCU a late 24-17 lead. Unbelievable luck hits Houston again. Another interception return made it 31-17.

FINAL: TCU is Houston's daddy after a 31-17 spanking...

                  Straight From the Coach
"I really hope we replace Anderson next year. This kid has not improved in any of the three years he's been here. He pulled one hell of an acting job in the first half not throwing any interceptions. His three in the second half are the ONLY reason we lost this game. I blame myself for this loss, but only because I didn't yank him at the half. I knew it was too good to be true, but I let him stay in anyway. I can't believe that move."

#14 Houston Cougars: 7-1 - Reeling after TCU upsets them...

hey man, once again good journal, something was striking me as kind of odd tho, im not really familar with UofH, but im venturing to say theyre not a gtood team, that being said, dont you find your all the sudden dominating performance a little bit too easy?, you whipped ranked teams liek they were school girls, granted you lose here and there, but man just seems like its really easy...

                        correct me if im wrong..

also please dont take this the wrong way im just really curious

                              #4 USM (8-0) at #14 Houston (7-1)
Another big test for this young Houston defense in tough conference opponent, Southern Miss. The UH defense forced a 3 and out. The offense displayed some efficiency as they drove the field and Rojas ran it in for the touchdown to put Houston up 7-0. Webster's interception set Houston up inside the 20. Anderson hit WR Dillard from the eight yard line to put Houston on top 14-0. The fans in the stands were on their feet cheering for their Cougars! A 74 yard interception made it 14-7. Good God, was Houston's offense going to lose the game for them again!? Varnado would make it 17-7 to give them a little bit of breathing room back. On their next drive, USM's quarterback threw an INT to Pryor at the 27 yard line. Houston was in business again. A 4 yard run by Daniel Rojas made it 24-7, Houston.

Halftime: 24-7, USM getting their butts handed to them by Houston...

Early in the third, an interception made it 24-14. USM would get the ball back and make it 24-21 with a few minutes still left in the third. They had Houston shaking now. They had made the secondary look like a bunch of Jr. High kids scramblinh around. Houston looked prime to blow another one... just as was their fashion under this head coach. A fumble gave USM the ball at midfield but the UH defense stood tall. With 5 minutes, USM got the ball at the 1 yard line. Sophmore DT David Boswell intercepted the ball off the tip at the 5 yard line. Anderson hit Brown and it was 31-21 with just over 4 minutes to play. Houston might be able to pull it off after all. The defense was strong and did not budge at the end, intercepting the ball at the 41 yard line of USM to end it, basically.

Final: Houston gets big upset against #4 USM 31-21!

                              PLAYER of the GAME
TE Chance Brown with 13 rec, 114 yards, and 1 touchdown. He was big in the Cougars' win over #4 USM today.

                              SURPRISE of the GAME
All the interceptions on defense. A total of 5 for the day.

                              Mentionable Performances
                              QB Aaron Anderson - 115.8, 28/45, 256 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT
FB Daniel Rojas - 5 att, 16 yards, 2 TD
WR Lawrence Dillard - 7 rec, 62 yards, 1 TD
SS Toby Webster - 1 tackle, 2 INT
FS Jake Weese - 3 tackles, 3 sacks

#8 Houston Cougars: 8-1 - A big win over #4 USM restores confidence...

Re: NCAA 2004: Prestige to Challenge
