Re: NCAA 2004: Prestige to Challenge

    HOUSTON BOWL
    Houston (10-2) vs Missouri (6-6)

The coach couldn't have been more dead on in his pre-game fears. Missouri, unfortunately for Houston, came to play and to prove a point. In the first quarter, FS Nix left the game with a mild concussion. There were a few scoring opportunities missed by both sides, but at the end of the quarter, it was still 0-0. The highlight would have to be Senior TE Chance Brown breaking the NCAA career record for receptions (he would finish at 346 for his career). The second quarter yielded only more defense as we went into the half tied at zero. The third quarter saw some excellent punts. It also saw Aaron Anderson throw an interception at the Houston 23 yard line. This made the coach bring in Cory Cooper for the rest of the game. Did Mizzou score? No... Webster stopped that from happening with an interception returned to the UH 28 yard line. Just before the third quarter ended, FS Jeremy Duncan broke his collarbone. We headed to the fourth with nobody having gotten into the endzone. Mizzou quickly ended the dry spell in the fourth quarter, scoring a touchdown with their HB Allen. A Cory Cooper interception gave them the ball back at the U of H 20 yard line and it was soon 14-0. With 4:07 left to play, John Thorburn took a 40 yard pass from Cory Cooper to the house to make it 14-7. Both defenses held strong and eventually Houston got a final chance with 34 seconds left, but a hail mary that was knocked down gave Mizzou the upset.

    FINAL: Mizzou upsets Houston 14-7
    Greatness Score: 404

    SEASON'S END
    NCAA Rank: #27
    Record: 10-3
FS Jason Nix was awarded the Thorpe Award
Coach Dean McMullen (Houston) was awarded Coach of the Year

    National Champion: Virginia Tech

            UPDATE
Houston went to Purdue hoping to start their season off with an impressive victory over a top 25 team. The game saw Houston switch out all the quarterbacks that were vying for the starting position- Cory Cooper, Casey Barrow, and Dustin Ray. It was a low scoring game, with Varnado starting it off in the third quarter with a field goal. Purdue rumbled down the field and took the lead 7-3 with an 8 yard pass. An interception by Dustin Ray returned for a touchdown made it 14-3, which is where the scoring would stop. In the fourth quarter, FS Corey Pryor broke his jaw and will be forced to miss the next 6 weeks.

            FINAL: Purdue defeats Houston 14-3

            Quarterback Watch
            Dustin Ray - 86.1, 12/24, 127 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT
            Cory Cooper - 64.3, 8/16, 51 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT
            Casey Barrow - 47.5, 3/9, 39 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT

            Comments
Houston did not run very much against Purdue as they were testing their quarterback and also RB Jamie Mitchell had a shaky performance... could there be a RB controversy? Only time will tell...

Houston Cougars: 0-1 - Loss to open the season is not fun...
Next Game: vs #13 Colorado St. (1-0)

                        #13 Colorado St. (1-0) at Houston (0-1)
Could Houston bounce back and upset the number thirteen team in the country? That's what the head coach was hoping for. Dustin Ray would start off the game at quarterback for the Cougars. Houston got the ball first but their offense was stopped before it started, going three and out. CSU drove downfield quickly and went ahead 7-0. FS Nix fumbled on the kickoff but Colorado St. failed to take advantage with their QB throwing an interception to Houston's CB Beard. Houston started driving and was around the 11 yard line when the 1st quarter ended 7-0. They kept going. Dustin Ray completed his 8th consecutive pass to the 3 yard line before FB Daniel Rojas took it in for six and Varnado made it 7-7. The Houston defense forced a three and out. Houston's head coach had planned to rotate quarterbacks at the quarters, and Ray's impressive drive didn't make him change his scheme. Cory Cooper would be tested next. He was unable to keep the magic alive and the drive stalled after the OL gave up a sack. Houston would get the ball back with just over 2 minutes in the half. From the 25 yard line, Houston tried to call a timeout with 1 second left but were unable to get the call in to the refs in time apparently. At the half, it was 7-7. Colorado State's drive to open the second half yielded a field goal attempt which was hooked left. Now Casey Barrow would try his hand at quarterback. His first pass was complete but WR Keenan Lawson fumbled at the 30 to give Colorado State another chance. They would be thankful for the opportunity as they were able to get a touchdown and go ahead 14-7. Houston's offense charged to midfield but then their tank ran out of gas and they had to punt it away. This greatly discouraged Casey Barrow. Houston's defense forced a punt and Nix redeemed himself for his kickoff fumble by making a great return inside the 30 with just over a minute left in the 3rd quarter. As the quarter ended, it was still 14-7 but Houston found themselves in a 1st & Goal situation from the 4, so once more, the quarterback would stay in to finish off the drive. Barrow finished off the drive with a 1 yard run on 4th & goal. 14-14. The head coach faced a tough decision, but decided to bring in Dustin Ray. Houston's defense forced another punt from Colorado State. Their offense would stall once more after a sack resulted from the lineman trying to block a LB instead of a DL. But the defense would come up huge as Beard collected his second interception of the day, this time at the CSU 30 yard line. Dustin Ray's first pass was an INT. Houston's defense gave their offense a chance with 1:40 left to play in regulation. Ray quickly killed any hopes by fumbling at thwe 10 yard line. CSU quickly went ahead on their first play to make it 20-14 after they missed the extra point. Houston would have to try to make something happen within 1:35. After two straight turnovers, the head coach put his faith in Casey Barrow. Houston found themselves at midfield with 1:09 left. The drive ended at the same spot four plays later. This was due mainly to a critical third sack from the defense. The head coach then chose to blow up not at his players, but at the OL coach for not being able to put together any protection. Houston didn't have a prayer left.

                        FINAL: Houston loses 20-14
                        Greatness Score: 526

                        Quarterback Watch
                        Cory Cooper - 104.5, 6/10, 53 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
                        Dustin Ray - 95.3, 11/18, 97 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT
                        Casey Barrow - 82.2, 8/18, 81 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT - 1 Rush TD

                        Mentionable Performances
TE Terrence Carter - 10 rec, 103 yards, 0 TD
CB Harry Beard - 2 tackles, 2 INT
LB Jason Mullins - 5 tackles, 1 sack

                        Straight From the Coach
"Starting 0-2 is always hard. Starting 0-2 because your offense kept running out of juice at midfield is unacceptable. I suppose I am going to have to come up with a gameplan that fits in with this quarterback controversy we're having. These are three different types of quarterbacks. Hopefully we can turn things around in our next game. This second loss this season definitely shows me that we are going to need to increase the intensity of our practices."

Houston: 0-2 - Losing two games to start season is a reality check...
                        Next Game: at UNC (2-1)

                          Straight From the Coach
"Starting 0-2 is always hard. Starting 0-2 because your offense kept running out of juice at midfield is unacceptable. I suppose I am going to have to come up with a gameplan that fits in with this quarterback controversy we're having. These are three different types of quarterbacks. Hopefully we can turn things around in our next game. This second loss this season definitely shows me that we are going to need to increase the intensity of our practices."

Houston: 0-2 - Losing two games to start season is a reality check...

                              UPDATE
Houston expected to go into Chapel Hill and dismantle North Carolina. What they got was a defensive battle that ended 20-10 and was much closer than the scoreboard would allow one to assume. In the end, a very late touchdown thrown by Cory Cooper gave Houston a little breathing room and their first win of the season!
