Re: NCAA 2004: Prestige to Challenge

    Houston (3-2) at Memphis (3-2)
Memphis definitely had something going on the opening drive, but they stalled at midfield and punted the ball away. Houston drove down to the 11 but Cooper fumbled and then the offensive lineman recovered but fumbled and finally Memphis decided they would hold on to it if the Cougars didn't want to. After the tight end Erik Johnson dropped two consecutive wide open passes, Houston would punt on their next possession. Memphis destroyed Houston's secondary on their way to an easy six. 7-0 Memphis took the lead and looked inclined to keep it. In their next drive, Memphis continued the magic with a 3rd & 18 conversion with a HB screen and then a long pass with 5 Houston defenders around and surprisingly... not one tried to make a play on the ball! The coach stared in disbelief. Their drive stalled just past midfield, however. Cory Cooper came out firing... a 62 yard pass to WR AJ Tucker who was able to get it all the way to the Memphis 24. Eventually Cory Cooper would hit TE Terrence Carter for an 8 yard score and Houston tied the game 7-7. That would be the halftime score. Houston had no running game from Jamie Mitchell, which forced them into more throwing situations than they would've liked to be in. Houston started the second half with a long drive, but they ran out of juice at the 17 and settled for a field goal. The score was now 10-7. Memphis answered right back with an 87 yard touchdown pass. It was incredible as the receiver was absolutely sandwiched in-between two defenders, but both defenders fell down leaving him standing somehow and then he was being run down and avoided a shoestring tackle with a perfectly-timed jump. Early in the 4th quarter, Houston capped another long drive with yet another touchdown pass from Cory Cooper to the tight end, this time for eleven yards. 17-14, Houston had retaken the lead. With 3 minutes left, CB Beard dismantled Memphis' hopes with an interception. Houston would miss a field goal attempt giving Memphis the ball back late in the game. On the drive, Olson came away with a pick to virtually end the game.

    FINAL: Houston escapes 17-14

      Houston (4-2) at TCU (7-1)
Houston won the toss and opted to kick the ball. TCU's first play was a disaster. They attempted to run the option but when the QB lateralled the ball, it bounced off the running back and into a Houston DE's hands at the 2 yard line. After getting sacked, Houston had to settle for a 3-0 lead. With two minutes left in the first quarter, Houston ended a long drive with a touchdown run by FB Daniel Rojas. Houston led 10-0. With just under a minute in the first quarter, SS Toby Webster made a spectacular interception and returned it for the touchdown to give Houston an eye-popping 17-0 lead over the Horned Frogs. Near the end of the second quarter, TCU finally put together a scoring drive ending with a 35+ yard touchdown pass. It was 17-7, with just over two minutes left in the half. Near the end of the third quarter, TCU would add a field goal to make it 17-10. Houston's offense couldn't seem to get moving. That is... until it was necessary. With it only a one-score contest, Houston felt the need for some breathing room. Cory Cooper led the Cougars downfield with some nice passes and Jamie Mitchell added a 17 yard run to set up Houston in good position. Cooper finished off the drive with a short toss to WR Lawrence Dillard. Halfway through the 4th quarter the score was now 24-10. Before the game ended, Cooper was able to add another touchdown, this time to the tight end.

      FINAL: Houston wins 31-10!

      Player of the Game
This award goes to none other than a quarterback! Cory Cooper is POTG with 182 yards on 24 completions and 2 touchdowns. Also, he threw zero interceptions, despite pressure which resulted in his being sacked six times.

      Surprise of the Game
The fact that Houston blew out TCU. TCU was at the head of C-USA and Houston was 4th. This is definitely going to disrupt the rankings.

      Mentionable Performances
TE Terrence Carter - 8 rec, 63 yards, 1 TD
WR David Gaines - 7 rec, 62 yards, 0 TD
SS Toby Webster - 4 tackles, 1 INT, 1 TD
LB Jason Mullins - 4 tackles, 1 sack

Houston: 5-2 - Feeling great after huge upset of TCU...
Next Game: at #15 Auburn (7-1)
