I know it's over and done with, but a word of advice: When you're blowing out a team, put in your 2nd string guys.

Re: NCAA 2004: Prestige to Challenge

      Alabama (0-0) at #24 Houston (0-0)
Houston was looking for a good, convincing win to start the season off. Late in the first quarter Alabama took a 3-0 lead and then stopped Houston's offense. However, they fumbled and MLB Jason Mullins scooped up the loose ball and ran it in for the touchdown to put Houston on top 7-3. Alabama's running game was key in their success in driving down the field but they would have to settle for a field goal and they made it 7-6. With just over two minutes left in the half, Cory Cooper hit WR Keenan Lawson for the touchdown and Houston had a 14-6 lead. Just before half, Houston's freshman kicker McClure made it 17-6. Alabama forced Houston to punt on the opening drive of the second half, but a muffed punt return gave Houston the ball on Bama's 28 yard line. Houston would fail to make anything of it, however. Late in the 4th quarter, MLB Jason Mullins intercepted a pass to seal the game.

FINAL: Houston escapes Bama's visit 17-6

      Player of the Game
Without a doubt MLB Jason Mullins! He had 6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 defensive touchdown. An outstanding game from this great senior.

WR AJ Tucker - 9 rec, 124 yards, 0 TD

Thanks for the comments you guys. CB Jason Harper only got 1 tackle last game but that's because not a single pass was thrown to his side!

                  #22 Houston (1-0) at #21 Tennessee (1-0)
What a matchup early in the season! Tennesesee started off the scoring with a field goal. Houston answered right back with a long drive that ended with Jamie Mitchell grinding the ball into the endzone to put Houston ahead 7-3. After Houston's tough defense forced another punt, the offense went for it all and it paid off as Cory Cooper hooked up with WR AJ Tucker for a 50 yard touchdown strike. 14-3, Houston was gaining momentum in Tennessee's house. Midway through the second quarter, Houston's freshman kicker made it 17-3. Late in the third, the Cougars added another field goal to take a comfortable 20-3 lead. The end of the 3rd quarter saw WR AJ Tucker go down due to a pinched nerve and it will cost him 4 weeks. Early in the fourth quarter the Cougars riskiness paid off again as Cooper called for Lawson to go on a fly route and he hit him for a 45-yard touchdown. Houston now had a commanding 27-3 lead. The 2nd stringers would come in to play now. Late in the fourth quarter, Tennessee was finally able to score on the scrubs and make it 27-9 as they failed on the 2-pt conversion. With just 30 seconds left, Tennessee felt the need to prove something against these scrubs still and scored another touchdown. Another two point conversion failed and the score was 27-15.

                  FINAL: Houston defeats Tennessee 27-15!

                  Surprise of the Game
The unbelievable talent displayed by the starting defense of the Houston Cougars. It just dominated the Tennessee offense for the first three quarters. MLB Jason Mullins had 4 tackles and two sacks on the day.

                  Mentionable Performances
                  QB Cory Cooper - 159.3, 18/30, 276 yards, 2 td, 0 int
                  RB Jamie Mitchell - 17 att, 63 yards, 1 td - 3 rec, 24 yards

WR Keenan Lawson - 2 rec, 57 yards, 1 td

                        #17 LSU (2-0) at #18 Houston (2-0)
Another big early-season matchup. LSU received the ball first and seemed to instantly be at midfield. On 3rd & 7, the Tigers threw an incomplete pass and were forced to punt. A notable occurence on the drive, however. The RB of LSU got a 12 yard gain on an option play in which he was able to brush off CB Jason Harper. That's strength right there. LSU forced a 3 and out after a big sack. The punt was bad... going out of bounds at the UH 47 yard line. LSU's WR made a miracle reception off a tipped ball... that's happened quite often to Houston. They had the ball inside the 15 yard line now. CB Beard came away with a huge interception returned to the 34 yard line of Houston. Decent field position to start their next drive. Houston drove and Cory Cooper finally hit WR Darius Byrd for the touchdown. The freshman kicker missed the extra point leaving the Cougars with a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter. Two plays later, Nix intercepted the ball at midfield. Houston got inside the red zone and then Cory Cooper hit RB Jamie Mitchell in the flat. Mitchell made a wicked spin move to get around two defenders and burst 11 yards to paydirt. The Houston Cougars took a 13-0 lead. Cory Cooper went deep but threw an INT at the LSU 7. No problem, as for the second time this year MLB Jason Mullins intercepted the ball and returned it for the touchdown to give UH a 20-0 lead late in the first half. The next drive, Houston's CB Hutchinson intercepted the ball at midfield. This allowed Houston to make it 23-0 at the half.

Early in the third quarter, Jason Mullins recorded his second interception. Cooper threw his second interception of the day as well. LSU finally got on the board with a touchdown toss. They went for the two point conversion and failed, making it 23-6. On their next drive, LSU added a field goal to make the gap a little smaller 23-9. After another successful drive, Houston's Cory Cooper found Dillard for the touchdown. Late in the third quarter, the Cougars were beating the Tigers 30-9. Late in the fourth, Nix got another interception. The second stringers would come in to finish the game. LSU was able to drive the field just before the game ended and tacked on a final touchdown to make it 30-16.

                        FINAL: Houston beats LSU 30-16!

                        Player of the Game
Jason Mullins once more. He had 2 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.

                        Surprise of the Game
Shutting down LSU's offense. This defense is an offense's worst nightmare.

                        Mentionable Performances
                        QB Cory Cooper - 150.2, 18/28, 216 yards, 3 td, 2 int
                        RB Jamie Mitchell - 25 att, 136 yards, 0 td - 2 rec, 24 yards, 1 td
WR Darius Byrd - 9 rec, 132 yards, 1 td
WR Lawrence Dillard - 5 rec, 44 yards, 1 td

Houston: 3-0 - Looking almost unstoppable on defense...
