Re: NCAA 2004: Prestige to Challenge

    Update
Houston went into USM looking for a huge conference upset over the number five team in the nation. They got just that with the help of Cory Cooper. They won 16-6 and Cooper threw two touchdowns and just one interception. The unbelievable win boosted Houston to #25!

    Houston: 6-3
    Next game: vs Army (1-9)

Re: NCAA 2004: Prestige to Challenge

      Update
Houston took care of Army 24-6, and more than a couple players had outstanding performances. Cory Cooper threw for 384 yards, 3 touchdowns, and only one interception. However, with a mere 24 seconds left in the game, Cooper was knocked out and will now miss the rest of the season with a torn shoulder muscle. WR AJ Tucker had a spectacular receiving day-- 10 receptions for 141 yards and a touchdown. David Gaines had 8 receptions for 57 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, CB Harry Beard was the star with two tackles and THREE interceptions. MLB Jason Mullins had 4 tackles, 2 sacks, and a fumble recovery.

      Straight From the Coach
"A good win... but costly. Cory Cooper was coming through for us in a way that no one had yet at the quarterback position. To lose him at this point in the season is devastating. We'll just have to try and find a way to work around it. Hopefully Casey Barrow and Dustin Ray can successfully fill the void."

      REAL COMMENTS
I just realized my CB's name is Harry Beard. That's pretty funny, eh? Harry Beard. Eh... I dunno... just kind of funny that the computer created that name.

Houston: 7-3 - Bittersweet win as Cooper is done for the year...
Next game: vs #13 Louisville (9-1)

Man that absolutely sucks that Cooper went down before the biggest game of the year. I say biggest game of the year because this game will probably determine who wins C-USA. At least it should, since we're the only two teams left with an undefeated conference record. I'm thinking of going with Barrow the whole game. Ray is slow and seemed to throw a lot of interceptions. Man, I get the feeling Louisville is going to slam me...

Hey it's not bad to sub in a WR in the TE position and put the TE in the WR position is it? With the tight end position, I'm substituting the TE's catching ability for the WR's speed, and at the WR position, it's vice versa. This isn't in bad taste or anything, right?

                        #13 Louisville (9-1) at #21 Houston (7-3) C-USA Game

Houston had to start Casey Barrow at quarterback and hope he could pull off some sort of miracle victory against a team that has annually given this team and head coach constant headaches. This time it was the real deal... whoever won this game, provided they win any other remaining conference games, would most likely win the whole conference. That's something that the Cougars have wanted for a long time. Houston forced a punt on the opening drive, but FS Jake Weese fumbled the return, but it was all for naught as Harry Beard got an interception at the 10 yard line to prevent any score from Louisville. Louisville forced Houston to punt and then the Houston defense responded in kind. Barrow was knocked out for a quarter with a foot sprain. Late in the first quarter, Dustin Ray was able to lead the Cougars down the field 84 yards for the score after an 11-play drive that ended with FB Daniel Rojas forcing his way into the endzone. 7-0, Houston looked pumped. Could their D hold strong? No. Louisville *****-slapped Houston's secondary and tied the game in just over a minute of play. Louisville did it again after forcing a 3-and-out and took a 14-7 lead. Midway through the second quarter, Barrow again led Houston 80 yards on a 9-play drive ending with a 1 yard QB sneak on 4th & goal to help tie the game back up at 14. With 33 seconds left in the half, Barrow hit WR David Gaines for the touchdown to put Houston on top 21-14. Late in the 3rd quarter, Webster intercepted the ball at the Louisville 25 yard line. With 30 seconds left in the third quarter, Casey Barrow hit David Gaines once more to put Houston on top 28-14. All it took was one 82 yard pass for Louisville to get back in it with 17 seconds still to go in the 3rd quarter. 28-21, the gap was closing. With 4 minutes left in the game, Adam Varnado gave Houston a 31-21 lead. After a huge sack by OLB Seth Jewell, Louisville failed to convert fourth down and Houston got the ball on the 32 yard line of their opponents. They tried to pound the ball to run out the clock but with just under a minute left, they ran out of field as Casey Barrow snuck in another TD to basically seal the game at 38-21.

FINAL: Houston upsets #13 Louisville 38-21!!

                        Player of the Game
Without a doubt QB Casey Barrow. He did more than his share in filling in for the injured Cory Cooper. Barrow completed 28 of 42 attempts for 309 yards and 2 touchdowns but zero interceptions. He also tacked on 2 rushing touchdowns.

                        Surprise of the Game
The inspired play of the whole Houston Cougars team. To upset Louisville and have a great shot at the C-USA title is something that not many saw happening.

                        Mentionable Performances
WR Darius Byrd - 11 rec, 130 yards, 0 TD
WR AJ Tucker - 7 rec, 149 yards, 0 TD
WR David Gaines - 3 rec, 9 yards, 2 TD

Houston Cougars: 8-3 - Huge upset makes them #1 in C-USA
                        Next Game: at UAB (1-10)
