Re: NCAA 2004: Prestige to Challenge

    #4 USM (8-0) at #14 Houston (7-1)
Another big test for this young Houston defense in tough conference opponent, Southern Miss. The UH defense forced a 3 and out. The offense displayed some efficiency as they drove the field and Rojas ran it in for the touchdown to put Houston up 7-0. Webster's interception set Houston up inside the 20. Anderson hit WR Dillard from the eight yard line to put Houston on top 14-0. The fans in the stands were on their feet cheering for their Cougars! A 74 yard interception made it 14-7. Good God, was Houston's offense going to lose the game for them again!? Varnado would make it 17-7 to give them a little bit of breathing room back. On their next drive, USM's quarterback threw an INT to Pryor at the 27 yard line. Houston was in business again. A 4 yard run by Daniel Rojas made it 24-7, Houston.

Halftime: 24-7, USM getting their butts handed to them by Houston...

Early in the third, an interception made it 24-14. USM would get the ball back and make it 24-21 with a few minutes still left in the third. They had Houston shaking now. They had made the secondary look like a bunch of Jr. High kids scramblinh around. Houston looked prime to blow another one... just as was their fashion under this head coach. A fumble gave USM the ball at midfield but the UH defense stood tall. With 5 minutes, USM got the ball at the 1 yard line. Sophmore DT David Boswell intercepted the ball off the tip at the 5 yard line. Anderson hit Brown and it was 31-21 with just over 4 minutes to play. Houston might be able to pull it off after all. The defense was strong and did not budge at the end, intercepting the ball at the 41 yard line of USM to end it, basically.

Final: Houston gets big upset against #4 USM 31-21!

    PLAYER of the GAME
TE Chance Brown with 13 rec, 114 yards, and 1 touchdown. He was big in the Cougars' win over #4 USM today.

    SURPRISE of the GAME
All the interceptions on defense. A total of 5 for the day.

    Mentionable Performances
    QB Aaron Anderson - 115.8, 28/45, 256 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT
FB Daniel Rojas - 5 att, 16 yards, 2 TD
WR Lawrence Dillard - 7 rec, 62 yards, 1 TD
SS Toby Webster - 1 tackle, 2 INT
FS Jake Weese - 3 tackles, 3 sacks

#8 Houston Cougars: 8-1 - A big win over #4 USM restores confidence...
    Next Game: at Army (3-7)

      More Recognition!
Their big win over #4 USM and their new #8 ranking helped land the Houston Cougars and Jake Weese on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The headline on the cover was referring to how Houston had come out of nowhere, and was posing the question- how high would they climb in the polls this season? The team said it was an honor.

hey man, once again good journal, something was striking me as kind of odd tho, im not really familar with UofH, but im venturing to say theyre not a gtood team, that being said, dont you find your all the sudden dominating performance a little bit too easy?, you whipped ranked teams liek they were school girls, granted you lose here and there, but man just seems like its really easy...

            correct me if im wrong..

also please dont take this the wrong way im just really curious

Yeah, I was noticing that too. But I haven't played too many ranked teams that were good this season. Notre Dame fell out of the rankings early. Other teams that I thought were better have been slipping this year, too. Also, I did manage to bring in 7 total 5 star recruits over the past two seasons. I think it's a combination of: Getting better at Heisman + Recruits + Teams Falling Apart. After this season, I plan on bumping up the difficulty via changing the slider adjustments. It will of course remain on Heisman. And i'll be scheduling a harder schedule next season.

An example of the getting stronger thing over the seasons is: When I started at UH their ranking was like 90 or so. Coming into this season, I had them ranked by SI in the pre-season polls at #40. So, the team *has* gotten stronger overall, which is *part* of it. The other part should be fixed by sliders. I hope I get a conference invite sometime. That would be cool.

                  Update
Army kept it competitive for most of the game, but the Cougars pulled away late to win 30-13. Now they face Louisville, who they just can not seem to beat. However, one thing is different this year-- at 7-3, Louisville is unranked!
