          Central Michigan   21   23-44
          Michigan              45   57-102

Wolverines open 2005 with a bang

For the first time in a long time, Michigan has national championship aspirations as they begin a season.

And they were not about to disappoint in their opener against Central Michigan at Crisler Arena. CMU had an early 8-4 lead, and all Daniel Horton did was laugh as he dribbled upcourt. Horton actually split time with newcoming freshman Trevor Armstrong from Turkey. Armstrong's English is impeccable, as he himself had 16 points and 9 dimes in his college debut, while Horton opened the year with a double double, as the Wolverines breezed past CMU, 102-44.

          Player of the Game

Daniel Horton: 22 points, 12 assists, 2 steals

Lester Abram: 21 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals
Dion Harris: 21 points, 2 steals
Trevor Armstrong: 16 points, 9 assists, 2 steals
Courtney Sims: 9 points, 21 rebounds, 6 blocks
Brent Petway: 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks

          Kevin Nelson: 16 points
Drew Walker: 10 points, 4 rebounds
Eddie Spencer: 8 points, 7 rebounds
Sefton Barrett: 2 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists

                  #4 Michigan   39   41     8-88
                  #2 Duke         38   42   14-94

Duke be"devils" Michigan with furious comeback, OT triumph

It was a high octane thriller, a matchup between a pair of powerhouses.

The only difference was, one of the teams isn't used to being a powerhouse...yet.

#2 Duke stunned #4 Michigan with a 19-0 run that was the major part of a 24-3 run when Michigan was up 62-50 and 65-55. The Wolverines rallied with an 11-1 run of their own, and in the end the game went to overtime, where Duke's experience prevailed, as the Blue Devils won, 94-88.

Duke brought stars J.J. Redick and DeMarcus Nelson into the game, along with Lee Melchionni and freshman stars Vladimiras Caton and Andre' Drake. Michigan brought Daniel Horton and Dion Harris, but almost no one else contributed.

                  Player of the Game

                  DeMarcus Nelson (21): 26 points, 14 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals

Daniel Horton: 36 points, 9 assists, 3 steals
Dion Harris: 25 points, 4 rebounds
Lester Abram: 10 points, 4 rebounds
Trevor Armstrong: 6 points, 5 assists
Courtney Sims: 5 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks

                  J.J. Redick: 25 points
Lee Melchionni: 21 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds
Vladimiras Caton: 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 blocks
Andre' Drake: 5 points, 7 rebounds
                  Shavlik Randolph: 10 rebounds
