Re: Pete And Repeat
The Fab 5, Week Two
1. GREEN BAY PACKERS (2-0)
May be the most complete team in the league.
2. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (2-0)
Decisive 17-point win over New Orleans on MNFB.
3. DENVER BRONCOS (2-0)
Peyton who?
4. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (1-1)
Bolts racked up 48 points in bounce-back win over Falcons.
5. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (1-1)
Got bushwhacked in OT in Baltimore, but they still have 12 to 81.
Who's Toast, Who's Not?
After two weeks of play, there are seven teams who are still looking for their first win of 2016. And with 0-2 teams digging out to make a playoff run only 12% of the time, the majority of this group can already be written off. The Bears, Bucs and Raiders weren’t expected to show up anyway. It was thought the Texans would be competitive again this season, but it looks like they’re already on life support after losses of 17 points to the Jaguars and 34 to the Dolphins. The biggest surprise in this bunch, the Seahawks, showed us last year what kind of streak they can go on and stand the best chance of recovery. That leaves the Steelers and Vikings as teams which are already on the bubble. As we saw from last season, the AFC North could be won with a losing record. Although that’s not likely to be the case two years in a row, it will be close, and none of Pittsburgh’s competition looks like a 10-win team. For the Vikings, it’s too early to say whether this week’s loss to Jacksonville should be troubling, because the Jags may be on the way to a breakout season, but Minny could hardly afford to go 2 games down to Green Bay this early. The Vikes still have the opportunity to forge their own destiny, however, and their head-to-head confrontations with the Pack will have huge implications.
Too Early To Celebrate?
Four teams with losing records in 2015 are of to a 2-0 start. The Giants are the least surprising as they were expected to rebound into playoff contention with a much-improved defense. The Jaguars are just a win away from matching last year’s total and Blake Bortles is playing as if his job depends on it (it does), but one of those wins came against a still-floundering Houston team. Things are upeat in Charlotte after a win over KC, but the Chiefs were minus Jamaal Charles and the Panthers have yet to play their games against New Orleans and the Arizona-Los Angeles-Seattle NFC West trifecta, all of which could be reality checks. While the Dolphins do look better in their first two games under Harold Goodwin, they also have yet to face the NFC West powers or to play any of their divisional games, and like the Jags, they count a win over the Texans as one of their two.

2 weeksGame Notes it's hard to imagine the team that went 19-0 a season ago already having its back to the wall, but here the Seahawks are going into their third consecutive nationally-televised game needing a win to avoid a poisonous 0-3 start to the 2016 season. This week it's the highly-anticipated Monday Night Football matchup of 12 to 81 2.0 versus the Legion of Boom. Despite the Seahawks' early schedule, ESPN was hoping this would be a battle of unbeatens. Instead, its getting a pairing of teams which already have a total of 3 losses, but that hasn't slowed down the hype machine. The injury bug has already taken a rather large bite out of the Pats and that could well be the deciding factor here- Tom Brady won't have Gronk to throw to or Nate Solder to protect him from Cliff Avril.

Brady's Injury: End of the Line?
With 1:45 remaining in the first half, the Seattle Seahawks were up 24-0 and appeared to be on the way to a very surprising thumping of the New England Patriots on a crisp late-September Monday night. But Paul Richardson’s 3 yard touchdown reception turned out to be the last of Seattle’s scoring as the New England defense gathered itself during the intermission and pitched a second half shutout. The Pats, meanwhile, got on the board before the break, then proceeded to get within a touchdown and a two point conversion of tying the score. Seattle, however, was able to hold on to that 8 point lead and go home with its much-delayed first win of the season. But long after the foregoing details are forgotten, this game will be remembered for something else. For some, the something else was deja vu. Deja vu of the worst kind.
On November 18, 1985, also in a Monday Night Football game, quarterback Joe Theismann of the Washington Redskins (and the owner of two Super Bowl rings and two MVP awards) was sacked by Giants linebackers Harry Carson and Lawrence Taylor, resulting in what ESPN viewers voted as the NFL’s "Most Shocking Moment in History". Both of Theismann’s lower right leg bones were snapped, and as he lay on the field in agony, the lower leg was bisected by 45 degree angle that did not belong there. The compound fracture of the tibia caused insufficient bone growth during Theismann’s recovery, leaving his right leg shorter than the left. At age 36, Theismann’s career was over.
During the first minute of the fourth quarter of this game, Tom Brady was taken down by Cliff Avril just as he released a pass. Brady’s right leg came down at an awkward angle and with one of Avril’s knees squarely at the center of the shin. Thirty years of medical advances have taken place between Theismann and Brady suffering a compound fracture of the tibia, and Brady may not end up with the injured leg being shorter than the other. We have yet to know whether his recovery will be sufficient for him to continue his career at age 40 in 2017. What we do know is that Tom Brady’s 2016 season, the one that was to be 12 to 81 2.0, is over. And we might very well have seen him play his last down.
The Seahwks began building that 24-0 lead with a field goal capping the opening series. A catch by Julian Edelman and run by Dion Lewis moved the sticks for the Pats, but then New England was suddenly down 10-0 when K.J. Wright grabbed a pass intended for Scott Chandler and took it to the barn. The Pats punted out of their next series, with Kyle Wilson downing the kick at the 8. On the next snap, however, Bryce Brown’s 40 yard run on a stretch play dug the Seahawks out, and Russell Wilson’s 6 yard toss to Doug Baldwin completed the 92 yard drive, leaving the Patriots reeling under a 17-0 deficit. Following an exchange of punts, with Jon Ryan putting his out of bounds at the 4, Pete Carroll got a Megatron catch reversed by the replay booth, and on the next play Bobby Wagner picked off Brady, getting taken down at the 3 by Edelman. Richardson’s TD catch for the 24-0 lead came on the next snap. On the final play of the half, Stephen Gostkowski scraped the crossbar with a 56 yard kick that finally got the Pats on the board.
After receiving the second half kickoff, New England drove to a second field goal. Seattle’s first series of the second half was a three and out, after which the Patriots marched to their lone touchdown of the game, Brady’s 10 yard pass to Lewis at the 5:38 mark of the third quarter, which ended a play after Seattle’s next punt. It was at the opening of the fourth that disaster struck Brady and the Patriots, and within minutes Avril’s Twitter account was flooded, with tweets running the gamut from death threats to congratulations. Suddenly it was Jimmy G. time, for better or worse, and despite the shock of the injury, Garoppolo and the Pats put together a drive, halted by Xavius Hunt’s deflection, that yielded the 43 yard field goal that made it an 8 point game. The Seahawks followed with a three and out that had Ryan punting out of the end zone and Danny Amendola making a fair catch at the New England 42 with 9:03 left in the game. The ensuing series reached a 4th and 6 at the Seattle 21, and The Hoodie decided to go for it. Garoppolo hit Amendola, but the throw was behind Amendola, who was brought up short of the first down marker. Had he not had to reach behind himself to make the grab, Amendola might have gotten the yardage needed to convert. When a 3rd and 1 carry by Wayman Avery left it 4th and inches, Carroll rolled the dice and was rewarded with a conversion on a Wilson sneak. The Seahawks got the clock down to the two minute warning, then used up New England’s time outs, but on the play before Wilson was going to take a knee, Christine Michael lost a fumble forced by Levone Dickerson and recovered by Jabaal Sheard at the Patriot 17 with 37 ticks on the clock. Had the Pats kicked a field goal in their previous possession, they would have only been 5 points down and the TD they needed for a chance to force overtime could have been a game-winner. The sticks were moved twice, and Garoppolo spiked the ball at the 40 with the clock down to 00:12. The next play brought a sack by Tony Jerod-Eddie, and time ran out on New England’s rally.

Re: Pete And Repeat
Last week the Seattle Seahawks got away with scoring all of their points first, going up 24-0 before the New England Patriots scored the game’s final 16 points. This week they were seconds away from a negative result caused by their offense going dead after establishing a 14-0 lead. Things were looking good for the Seahawks after the first quarter ended with them up 14-0, but with 8:15 left in the game they found themselves trailing 19-14 and needing a go-ahead touchdown to avoid falling to 1-3, which would have been their worst start since 2011.
On the second play from scrimmage, Earl Thomas picked off Ryan Tannehill, returning the ball to the Miami 39. Asked to convert a 2nd and inches at the 6, fullback Derrick Coleman decided to just barrel his way on into the end zone for the game’s first score. After Miami punted out of the next series, the Seahawks reached a 4th and goal at the 1 and the boss man wanted the TD. Coleman was once again the go-to guy, but this time he was stuffed for a loss of a yard. The Dolphins then went three and out, and taking advantage of the resulting short field, the Seahawks drove to their second touchdown of the quarter, a 3 yard run by Bryce Brown. Tannehill got his first completion on his 7th attempt, and that seemed to prime his pump. The Dolphins went on to reach the Seattle 4 on an 8 yard reception by Tamani Sapp, but on the next play @Bwagz54 forced a Dexter Dukes fumble that was recovered by Kevin Pierre-Louis at the 7. Russell Wilson soon gave it back, however, getting stripped on a scramble by rookie corner Dimitrios Gordon, who also fell on the loose ball at the 21. On third and goal at the 3, Tannehill delivered to an airborne Greg Jennings, who got sent into a barrel roll by Wagner for a breakup, and the Fins settled for getting on the board with a field goal. That made 3 points in two trips to the red zone for the Dolphins, and as things turned out, it’s a good thing they didn’t do better. A 37 yard pick-six by Gordon in the next series quickly made it a 14-10 game. Seattle then went three and out, going backwards, and after an 89 yard Jon Ryan punt, Miami drove to Francisco Delgado’s 42 yard field goal. With 1:15 left in the half, Seattle’s two-touchdown advantage had been trimmed to a single point. In that series, Seattle defenders dropped a pair of potential interceptions. Stanley Jean-Baptiste’s looked like it could have been a pick-six, but hey, a least that time he was close enough to the receiver to get a breakup.
Steven Hauschka missed a 49 yard field goal attempt to end the first possession of the second half. The Dolphins then went three and out, but the seemingly ever-present Gordon downed the punt at the 7. The Seahwaks went three and out as well, with Kenny Stills returning Jon Ryan’s punt to the Seattle 23. On third and goal at the 6, Stan John the Baptist got another breakup to limit Miami to another red zone field goal, but the lead had been blown and the Seahawks were down 16-14. The Fins’ go-ahead score came at the 1:30 mark of the third quarter, which ended with yet another Seattle 3 and out. Delgado extended Miami’s lead to 19-14 with 8:15 left in the game, then the next three series all ended with punts. Ryan put the latter one out of bounds at the 4 with 2:59 to go, and a Wagner sack at the 1 forced a Miami punt at the two minute warning. Fenton Ellis returned the kick to the Dolphins’ 37, and the Seahawks reached a critical 3rd and goal at the 4 with 27 ticks left. With the game riding on the play, Wilson went through his progressions and failed to find an open man. But he did see a lane, and bolted into the end zone for the go-ahead score at 00:19. Wilson’s pass on the try for 2 was incomplete, leaving the score 20-19. Linebacker Dondre Tracy forced a fumble on the kickoff return, and the loose ball was collected by Ed Reynolds and returned to the 12, leaving the Seahawks to run out the clock on he nail-biter.

The Fab 5, Week Four
1. GREEN BAY PACKERS (4-0)
2. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (4-0)
3. DENVER BRONCOS (3-0)
4. ARIZONA CARDINALS (4-0)
5. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (3-1)
One For The Record Books
Not only was Arizona’s 62-20 decimation of New England the worst defeat in Patriots history, the Cardinals have tied the record for the second-most points scored in a game. The other 62-point output happened on January 15, 2000, when the 14-2 Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the Miami Dolphins 62-7 in the divisional round of the playoffs. While Jimmy G looked fine against the Seahawks last week, he threw 5 picks to the Cards. With Arizona converting so many turnovers, Matt Forte ran for 4 touchdowns.
Turning Tides
The Jaguars only needed the first three weeks of the season to do it. Now, in knocking Jacksonville from the ranks of the unbeaten, Detroit has a similar achievement: both teams have already won as many games as they did in 2015.
The Tinfoil Curtain: Should Tomlin be On The Hotseat?
2015 was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first losing season since 2003. The Stillers are now off to their second 0-4 start in four years. The 2013 team went 8-4 in its last dozen games, but even if Pittsburgh could accomplish that this year- which looks doubtful given Big Ben’s play and the lack of a viable alternative- 2016 would still be the fourth non-winning season in five, and 2014's 9-7 record was only a game over .500. Absent a remarkable turnaround, come January it will have been six years since the Steelers won a playoff game. Which begs the question: how much more of this will be tolerated before it’s deemed time for a coaching change?

3 weeksGame Notes The Niners have lost three straight since winning on opening day, and Drew Brees may be re-thinking his signing decision. Offseason developments did improve the team somewhat, but those improvements have already been more than offset by the rash of injuries that has struck the team. As long as the Seahawks don't get too overconfident, this game should provide a W that doesn't come with a great deal of difficulty.

Re: Pete And Repeat
In a reversal of a pattern that the Seattle Seahawks had developed in games prior to their visit with the San Francisco 49ers, the Hawks failed to find the end zone in the first half. Trailing the Niners at halftime, even if only by a point, was a disturbing development, but the Seahawks uncoiled in the second half and struck the 49ers with 23 unanswered points for a 29-7 victory. Despite not throwing a touchdown pass, Russell Wilson posted his best passer rating of the season (106.8) by completing 20 of 25 passes for 241 yards. Conversely, Drew Brees was constantly harried by the Seattle defense, getting sacked 10 times, throwing a pair of picks and completing well below half of his passes for a miserable rating of 32.7.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Seahawks finally drew first blood with a 35 yard Steven Hauschka field goal less than two minutes into the second. In their series after that, they turned the ball over on downs when Derrick Coleman lost a yard on 4th and inches at the 4. Had Coleman just burrowed forward instead of trying to bounce outside like a tailback, he probably would have converted. San Francisco’s only score of the game, Carlos Hyde’s 2 yard run (set up by a 56 yard reception by Torrey Smith), came with only 46 seconds left in the half, but the Seahawks were not going to sit on that 7-3 deficit until the break, and their hurry-up offense generated Hauschka’s 29 yard kick for a 7-6 halftime score.
The 49ers punted out of the first series of the second half, after which the Seahawks drove to their first touchdown, a 5 yard run by Wilson. Seeking to make it a 14-7 game, Seattle went for two, but Wilson was sacked. San Francisco’s next possession ended with a 66 yard pick-six by Xavius Hunt. With 11:38 left in the game, Wayman Avery scored the longest touchdown of his career, from 36 yards out, and Hauschka tacked on a 48 yard boot with 6:23 to go for the final points of the game.

San Francisco’s wretched o-line allowed Drew Brees to be constantly hounded by the Seattle D.
It took the Seahawks until the third quarter to find the end zone on a 5 yard run by Russell Wilson.
Xavius Hunt’s pick-six made it 19-7.
Wayman Avery’s 36 yard dash was his longesr scoring run yet.

4. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (4-1)

90 Passes, 693 Yards
Those are the totals from this week’s Bears-Lions game. NFC Offensive Player of the Week Matthew Stafford wasn’t the only one slingin’ the rock. Christopher Tracy was 33 of 40 for 336 yards, and if it wasn’t for his 0/1 TD/INT, his rating would have been much higher than 91.2. But Chicago picked up its first win of the season, and Tracy would surely take that over player of the week honors.
Will The AFC North See A Complete Coaching Turnover In A 2 Year Span?
Cincinnati has a new coach this year and Mike Tomlin’s hot seat is a hot topic. John Harbaugh may be joining Tomlin over the coals now that is team has lost to Tomlin’s, making both teams a woeful 1-4. The Browns are .500 for now, but given what Cleveland is expected to do, it may be just a matter of time before we’re sure Mike Pettine is a lame duck.
