    Game Notes
Under Chip Kelly the Niners have been no better than they have been in recent years, and they already have injury issues. NaVorro Bowman and defense ends Clark Mayes and Tank Carradine are out the the lineup. With the San Francisco defense so weakened, the Seahawks could score a bushel of points.

Fool's Gold? Seahawks Demolish Kelly's Niners

Back in 2013 Chip Kelly lost three of his first four games in his first season with the Eagles. After a 44-0 drubbing by the Seattle Seahawks, he’s now on the brink of exceeding that dubious start and appears to have every chance to do so. Although Kelly held out optimism (delusion?) that Colin Kaepernick a/k/a Big Bird would flourish in his system, Kaep appears to still be mired in 2015 form and it may not be long before Kelly has to give up and turn to Blaine Gabbert. He certainly was throwing his hands up a lot during Sunday’s “contest”.

In contrast to the stark Niners picture, Seattle’s post-Beast Mode era is off to an auspicious start. Rookie Fred Alden made it three-for-three in eclipsing the century mark, and this time the Seahawks had a second 100-yard rusher in Wayman Avery. Alden bested Avery by 2 yards with 125 and 2 touchdowns on just 13 carries, with a long of 30 yards, which was one of his TD’s. Avery toted the rock 17 times and had the game’s longest run at 38 yards. Not to bet outdone, Russell Wilson completed 28 of 36 passes for 305 yards and 3 scores. Jimmy Graham hogged the receiving with 13 catches for 143 yards and a tub. No other Seahawk had more than 3 grabs.
Wilson’s first two TD passes staked the Seahawks to a 14-0 first quarter lead and a pair of Steven Hauscjka field goals had Seattle up 20-0 at halftime. Alden’s touchdowns both came in the final quarter, with his long run closing closing out the scoring.

          PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

          The Fab 5, Week 3

          1. DENVER BRONCOS (3-0)

Everybody thought the Broncos would have to rely heavily on their defense this season. Boris Crisp has been saying eff that. Denver’s offense is scoring an average of 47.7 points per game.

          2. GREEN BAY PACKERS (3-0)

Another easy win goes in the books.

          3. BUFFALO BILLS (3-0)

Rained on the previous unbeaten Rams’ parade.

          4. DALLAS COWBOYS (3-0)

Swept the G-Men in dominating style.

          5. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS(3-0)

Two of their wins are by a combined 94-3.

          Extra Crispy

Rookie Boris Crisp of Denver has repeated as the AFC’s Offensive player of the week. After throwing for 386 yards and 5 TD’s, Crisp’s passer rating stands at 131.7. In that game, Andy Dalton was a much lesser 38/57 for 328 yards, 3 TD and 2 INT (84.5).

          Don't You Forget About Me

While Crisp is the most-talked-about rookie that far, Philly’s Pat Mosley is exceeding expectations as well, establishing himself as the frontrunner for the NFC’s Offensive rookie of the Year. Mosley was 27/31 for 281 yards and 4 TD’s as the Eagles improved to 3-0 with a 35-3 rout of the Bears.

Is It Over For Andre Johnson?

Although he could be able to play again in 6 weeks or so, the Steelers have elected to place Andre Johnson on injured reserve to open a roster spot for another receiver. An injury settlement should be forthcoming, but Johnson may not generate any interest after he’s medically cleared to play, and he may have finally played his last down in the NFL. During his brief stint with Pittsburgh, Johnson caught 7 passes for 88 yards.

          Little Ben

Pittsburgh’s regular season losing streak has reached 19 games. Although Terrible Towelers may hate to admit it, Ben Roethlisberger is a major reason why. Through three games Roethlisberger has 1 and 3 picks and a rating of 67.8. Armed with two first round picks in 2017 thanks to their trade with the Rams, it may behoove the Steelers to invest one of them in a signal-caller.

            Game Notes
These season is less than a month old, and one of the Pouncey brothers is already injured (imagine that). Unfortunately for the Phins, it's theirs, and that could mean that Jordan Hill and/or rookie ShelDon Hayes could be making some noise when Miami visits Seattle. Adam Gase's quarterback whispering has yet to take with Ryan Tannehill, and the Dolphins didn't get a win until Week 3.

Seahawks 25% Perfect After Gutting Feisty Phins

The Seattle Seahawks have completed the first one-fourth of their 2016 schedule with a perfect 4-0 record, but when the Miami Dolphins came to town, they didn’t let themselves be put away that easily despite losing Ryan Tannehill in the early going. Miami held a 1 point lead at the end of the first quarter and later cut Seattle leads from 13 to 6 points, and from 15 to 8, before Steven Hauschka put the game’s final points on the board with 1:01 to go in a 32-21 victory. Russell Wilson was nearly unerring, completing 26 of 32 passes for 229 yards and 2 TD’s, and rookie Fred Alden has yet to not rush for over 100 yards.

The Phins began the game with a three and out, after which the Seahawks drove to a first blood field goal, which Hauschka hit from 47 yards out. Miami’s next series was much more successful, being capped by Tannehill’s 5 yard scramble. A red zone field goal by Hauschka cut the Miami lead to 7-6. On the first play after Tannehill left the game after sustaining a shoulder injury on another improvised run, Matt Moore completed his first attempt, but Kam Chancellor forced a Mitch Hale fumble that was recovered by Tharold Simon at the Seattle 22. The Seahawks only made one first down before having to punt, but their next series struck pay dirt with a 13 yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Doug Baldwin. In that series, Seattle tight end Cooper Helfet suffered a broken arm. The Dolphins followed with a three and out, then Seattle’s hurry-up offense generated Wilson’s 21 yard scoring pass to fullback Derrick Coleman for a 20-7 halftime lead.

The first score of the second half didn’t come until the 4:15 mark of the third quarter, when Jarvis Landry was way too open for a 32 yard strike from Moore, and the Seattle lead was back down to less than a TD. On the ensuing kickoff return, Fenton Ellis had one man to beat for a score but was hauled down by Jelani Jenkins at the Seattle 49. The good field position led to a 33 yard kick by Hauschka that had the Hawks up by 9 after three quarters of play. Wayman Avery’s 4 yard touchdown run, with Hauschka slicing the PAT wide left, expanded the lead to 29-14 with 8:41 to go, but Miami responded by marching to a 4 yard TD run by Kendall Hunter. With 2:53 remaining and within theoretical striking distance, the Phins kicked away. Their hopes evaporated on the next snap, when Alden peeled off a 53 yard run to the Miami 27, giving him exactly 100 yards on 11 carries. Keeping the ball on the ground, the Hawks settled for a field goal for an 11 point lead with only a minute to play, and the Dolphins’ final series was a four-play turnover on downs.

With the bye week ahead, the Seahawks will get an extra week to prepare for the biggest game on their schedule- a rematch of the past two NFC title games, both of which were lost to the Green Bay Packers.

                    PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

                    The Fab 5, Week 4

                    1. GREEN BAY PACKERS (4-0)

They may have lost the last two Super Bowls to the Broncos, but they're still undefeated and Denver isn't.

                    2. DALLAS COWBOYS (4-0)

                    Jerry’s Kids doing work.

                    3. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS(4-0)

Russell Wilson has the third-best passer rating in the league and rookie Fred Alden is on pace to rush for 1,980 yards.

                    4. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

They’s still been a playoff-caliber team thus far, but they could slip due to an injury-riddled o-line.

                    5. (t) SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (4-0)

Despite some key injuries, the AFC West leaders remain unblemished.

                    5. (t) HOUSTON TEXANS (4-0)

Some of their wins aren’t impressive, but they have yet to lose.

                    Pats Go 0-4-for-Brady Suspension

New England has failed to win a game while Tom Brady was serving his Deflategate suspension, handing the man with soft balls the unenviable task of overcoming a three-game deficit in the AFC East.

                    Raiders Have Kryptonite

Zeroes were erased from Oakland’s win column and Denver’s loss column with the Raiders handing the Broncos a 31-21 defeat. Super rookie Boris Crisp is no longer untarnished and to some extent he was outplayed by Derek Carr. Carr went 22-of-28 for 249 yards and two scores (127.5), while Crisp was 20/40 for 235 yards, 2 TD’s and a pick (93.2). Despite the setback, however, Crisp still has the league’s highest passer rating.

                    Falcons Can’t Hold OT Lead

Atlanta is now 0-2 vs. the NFC west after a 40-37 overtime loss to the Rams. All the Falcons had to to in order to secure an extra frame win was keep Los Angeles out of the end zone, but that proved to be a fruitless endeavor.

                    Weak as Kittens

The Carolina Panthers are now 0-4 following a 35-20 loss to the supposedly even more lackluster 49ers. Don’t expect these kitty-cats to claw their way out of this hole and make a late playoff push- Cam Newton sustained an ankle injury during the game and is expected to miss at least 5 more.

Fitzpatrick’s Value Has Just Taken A Hit

Think about it: if Geno Smith can earn AFC Player of the Week honors running the Jets’ offense, what does that say about Ryan Fitzpatrick’s 2015 success? When a team with a sudden QB need comes calling, that’s sure to be pointed out.

                    First Quarter Leaders

All of the teams that didn’t have a Week 4 bye have now completed 25% of the season. Here’s a look at some of the early leaderboards:

QB Rating: Boris Crisp (DEN) 119.5, Aaron Rodgers (GB) 113.1, Russell Wilson, SEA (11.6), Tony Romo (DAL) 110.0, Carson Palmer (ARI) 109.8

                          Game Notes
Here comes one of the NFL's games of the year- a huge grudge match featuring the combatants from the past two NFC Championship games. The Seakhawks and the Packers have met 4 times in the last two seasons, and the Hawks have gone 1-3, including both title games. Achieving 5-0 by defeating their arch-nemesis could put Seattle in the catbird's seat for ultimately securing home field throughout the playoffs. Both teams were idle last week.

                            Back-Breaker? Not Quite

At three different junctures of this titanic rematch of the past two NFC title games, the Seattle Seattle Seahawks held a 10 point lead over the Green Bay Packers. But the two-time defending conference champions just would not go away, and with only 1:26 to play, the Seahawks suddenly found themselves trailing by a point...

The game’s first series saw the Seahawks draw first blood when Russell Wilson and rookie Tamarcus Guy connected on a 15 yard screen. Along the way, the Hawks converted a 4th and 1 at the 30. For Guy, it was his first NFL touchdown. The Packers were quick to respond, tying the score on Davante Adams’ 67 yard catch and run. Seattle made it two scores in as many possessions when Wilson found Doug Baldwin in the end zone for a 6 yard score, but as things developed, the Seahawks would not reach the end zone again. And unfortunately for Guy, his day came to a premature end due to a bruised sternum. The Packers then went three and out, punting from their 7 thanks to a sack by Jordan Hill. The resulting short field was turned into another Seattle score, a 27 yard field goal by Steven Hauschka at 5:51 before the break. Hoping to cut their deficit to three points before the half, the Packers reached the 1 on a James Starks run but Seattle’s defense turned in a goal line stand that led to the score being 17-10 at the intermission.

On the second half’s first play from scrimmage, Richard Sherman picked off Aaron Rodgers and ran to the Green Bay 23, but alas the Seahawks were unable to move the sticks and had to settle for converting the turnover with Hauschka’s 27 yard three-pointer. In the following series, a Rodgers completion to Jared Cook got the Packers down to the Seattle 25, but two plays later they were in a 3rd and 18 and Rogers was sacked at the 38 by Michael Bennett. Mike McCarthy elected to go for the long field goal and Mason Crosby delivered to trim Green Bay’s deficit into the single digits again. The Seahawks answered with another field goal, and the third quarter ended with the score 23-13 and with the Packers in a 1st and 10 at the Seattle 43. That drive culminated in Rogers’ 7 yard touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson, and the game was now the closest it had been since it was tied at 7. With less than 5 minutes to go, Pete Carroll faced a critical decision and decided to take the points from a 27 yard Hauschka kick that left the Seahawks with a precarious 6 point lead. With Bobby Wagner getting a key stop of Eddie Lacy on 3rd and 1, the Packers went three and out. At the 2 minute warning, the Seahawks were at midfield in a 3rd and 1. Derrick Coleman converted, but the Hawks could not move the chains again, netting zero yards in their next three plays. Jon Ryan, however, placed a coffin-corner kick out of bounds at the 5 with 1:41 to go, appearing to have driven the last nail. And that, however, is when the roof fell in. Lacy, who up to that point had been held to just 13 yards on 9 carries, somehow got to the corner and eluded all Seattle defenders and raced 95 yards to pay dirt, putting the Packers a PAT away from the lead. Surrendering a 95 yard score and the lead with less than a minute and a half left might break the back of a lesser team, but Carroll’s Hawks are made of sterner stuff. Even so, it could have ended on 4th and 4 at the Green Bay 43, but Fenton Ellis got the necessary yards after the catch after Wilson floated him a screen, not being stopped until he was knocked out of bounds at the 29. Two plays later Wayman Avery carried from the 27 to the 14, and time expired as Hauschka’s 31 yard game-winner split the uprights.

                                PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

                                The Fab 5, Week 6

                                1. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (5-0)

Leapfrog the Boys after willing their way to a win over the previous no. 1.

                                2. DALLAS COWBOYS (5-0)

Showdown with Seattle looming two weeks away.

                                3. GREEN BAY PACKERS (4-1)

They were a defensive stop away from being 5-0 after trailing by 10 in Seattle.

                                4. DENVER BRONCOS(4-1)

Raiders loss might not have been a fluke- Oakland is the only team to have beaten Denver and San Diego.

                                5. BALTIMORE RAVENS (5-1)

Only loss was with Flacco out.

                                Week 7 Games To Watch

                                Eagles (5-1) @ Cowboys (5-0)

This game was expected to break the deadlock atop the NFC East- before the Eagles got themselves knocked off by the formerly winless Panthers. It’s still one of the week’s marquee matchups. Can Doug Pederson’s upstart Iggles rebound from that setback, or will the Boys remain unblemished?

                                Steelers (0-5) @ Bengals (3-3)

Pittsburgh’s regular season losing streak has reached 21 games; the Bengals expected to be better than .500 at this point. Is this the week the Steelers ambush somebody to get off the schnide?

                                Vikings (3-3) @ Texans (5-1)

Minny needs this game to get above .500; the Texans are trying to win the AFC South before December.

                                Raiders (3-3) @ Chargers (5-1)

Oakland is riding a 3 game winning streak after starting the season 0-3, and is the only team to have been the surprising Bolts.

                                Cardinals (4-2) @ Bills (5-1)

Arizona can’t afford to fall any further behind in the NFC West, while the Bills need the W to stay a game up on the Jets.

                                Hatching a Backup Plan

Last week second-year man Tavon Hatcher was taking snaps with Carolina’s practice squad. This week he’s the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Panthers to their first victory of the season, a 24-23 upset of the previously unbeaten Eagles. As a rookie Hatcher played only 12 downs, but it’s obvious he has absorbed Carolina’s system to full benefit.
