Hawks Rebound With Blanking Of Cards

The roller coaster ride that is the Seattle Seahawks’ life without Russell Wilson took another upturn as the Hawks went down to Glendale, Arizona and pitched a shutout against the Cardinals. With Carson Palmer going 30 of 41 for 337 yards, the Cards had opportunities to score, including getting as close as the 1 yard line, but were still unable to get anything on the board. Palmer was intercepted twice and sacked 8 times by a Seattle defense that was humiliated by Donfred Curry’s NFC Offensive Player of the Week performance a week ago, but which had also kept the Dallas Cowboys out of the end zone seven days before that. On offense, the Seahawks racked up 460 yards, with Josh Freeman looking like a first round pick as he completed 20 of 26 attempts for 236 yards and a TD, and with rookie receiver Tamarcus Guy having a breakout game. Guy grabbed 5 balls for 133 yards that included a 63 yard touchdown on Josh Johnson’s lone throw of the contest. While the Seahwks didn’t get a 100-yard game out of Fred Alden or Wayman Avery, the pair did combine for 131 yards on 27 total carries. The victory, which was Seattle’s second shutout of 2016, gives the Seahawks a half-game NFC West lead over the Rams, who were idle over the weekend.

The game began with each team going three and out, then Steven Hauschka missed a 46 yard field goal attempt after Calais Campbell’s sack of Freeman. On the next play Tharold Simon picked off Palmer, returning the ball to the Arizona 36. That takeaway led to Christine Michael’s 7 yard touchdown run on 2nd and 2. Arizona then punted from the Seattle 41, with Drew Butler’s kick angling out of bounds at the 15. A Seahawks three and out followed, then the Cardinals generated their first scoring opportunity. They were lined up for a 50 yard field goal attempt, but after a false start Bruce Arians chose to punt rather than to have Chandler Catanzaro try a 55-yarder. Seattle then drove to a 3rd and 2 at the 3, whereupon Freeman was sent a play-action call and he connected with fullback Derrick Coleman for a TD. The Cardinals punted out of bounds at the Seattle 15 again two plays after the two minute warning. Four plays later, Guy’s 47 yard catch and run put the ball at the Arizona 9, setting up Hauschka’s 22 yard field goal for a 17-0 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, the series after Hauschka stretched the lead to 20-0 ended with an Arizona turnover on downs at the Seattle 30 on a sack by a blitzing Earl Thomas. Following another three-pointer by Hauschka, Xavius Hunt’s interception ended a scoring threat and Johnson entered the game for some playing time. With the Seahawks just looking to move the sticks on 3rd and 2 and continue grinding the clock, Guy turned a short completion into the aforementioned 63 yard touchdown. A catch by Larry Fitzgerald that was almost a touchdown gave the Cardinals their best chance to score with a first and goal at the 1. But over the next four plays they didn’t run the ball once, and on 4th and goal Kam Chancellor got a knockdown that preserved the shutout.

        PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

        The Fab 5, Week 10

        1. GREEN BAY PACKERS (8-1)

Win over Dallas further solidifies top spot.

        2. NEW YORK JETS (7-2)

Logged their 6th straight win by spanking the Ratbirds.

        3. BUFFALO BILLS (7-2)

Rex Ryan’s team may be better than any he had with Gang Green.

        4. DENVER BRONCOS (6-3)

Attrition sees a 3-loss team make the list for the first time. The Broncos are the best of them and are better than their record indicates.

        5. HOUSTON TEXANS (7-2)

Losing to Denver wasn’t a terrible blow, but it did demonstrate that Houston overpaid to acquire Brock Osweiler- if there was any doubt remaining about that.

        Week 11 Games To Watch

        Vikings (5-4) @ Giants (5-4)

The winner will climb 2 games above .500. While the Vikes have been playing like a .500 club all season, the G-Men have won five of their last six.

        Redskins (4-5) @ Cowboys (6-3)

The Skins are another NFC East team turning its fortunes around, having won 3 of 4 after starting following an opening day win with 4 consecutive losses. Dallas has yet to win since getting bushwhacked by Seattle and a loss here would throw the division into a free-for-all.

        Jets (6-2) @ Ravens (6-2)

The Jets, having vindicated their decision to give Ryan Fitzpatrick the finger, have a 5-game winning streak on the line. Baltimore holds a 2 game lead in the AFC North and doesn’t want to see that shrink.

        Broncos (6-3) @ Chargers (6-3)

The AFC West lead goes to the winner, and if the Broncos can get the sweep, they’ll be in the driver’s seat.

        Seahawks (7-2) @ Bills (7-2)

Do the Seahawks have a false sense of security after a lopsided shutout of the Cards? They’d better not as Sexy Rexy and Co. are well aware of how well the Hawks have played in two of the three games of Russell Wilson’s absence.

        Rams (6-3) @ Cardinals (5-4)

A win for Jeff Fisher and the Rams will give them 7 wins at the earliest point of any of Fisher’s seasons, and will leave them with six more chances to get the 2 W’s necessary for his first winning season with the organization. For the Cardinals, a loss could eventually prevent Bruce Arians and co. from making a third consecutive playoff appearance.

        Steelers (2-7) @ Eagles (6-3)

Disregard the teams’ records for this in-state rivalry game.

        Jets (7-3) @ Patriots (1-8)

The Jets have not swept the Pats since 2000, the final year of the 20th century, and have not won two consecutive meetings since the 2008-2009 seasons.

          Game Notes
The last time these teams met, the Seahawks lit up the Bills in a 50-17 rout. That's not likely to happen this time for two main reasons: Russell Wilson's injury and the Bills being a far better team than they were four years ago. Still, the Bills do have issues with an injury-riddled o-line and they could be susceptible to a Seattle defense which has already pitched two shutouts and kept two other opponents out of the end zone.

I see the team is still playing well despite Wilson's absence, Josh Freeman has stepped it up. Its also interesting to see Crisp/Lynch tear up the league lol.

Also do you plan on keeping this 'chise going once Madden 17 comes out? Ik for myself I can't find the motivation to even play Madden 16 because 17 will be out in less than a week.

I'm at least going to finish out this season. I have only one regular season game left to play (still playing catch-up with the reports). But in doing all the the scouting for all of the teams I've found that this draft class is the most loaded I've ever seen. 24 of the first round projections have star or fast development, and the second round is about the same. That provides a lot of motivation for pushing forward. And I've never been one to start a new franchise from day 1 of a new Madden. I like to have the opening day rosters and sliders at least partially set. So when M17 drops I'll start a test chise for slider testing and exploring all of the new franchise options and I'll be splitting time between that and this chise.

Alden and Avery Propel Hawks To Slaughter of Buffalo

With Fred Alden and Wayman Avery each scoring an 80 yard touchdown on their first carries of the game, the Seattle Seahawks logged a surprising 56-9 demolition of AFC East co-leader Buffalo. With the pair of runners off to such an explosive start, it was easy for the Seahawks to have a tandem of 100-yard rushers for the second time this season, despite Alden and Avery finishing the day with only 15 combined carries. Christine Michael contributed an additional 64 yards on 13 attempts as Seattle gouged out 334 on the ground. As if that wasn’t enough, the Joshes each threw for multiple touchdowns, with Doug Baldwin setting a career mark of 3 scores on the minimum number of chances. And with the Bills managing only a trio of field goals, it was the fifth time this season that Seattle’s defense kept an opposing offense from reaching the end zone.

Shady McCoy ran for a first down on the game’s first play from scrimmage, and on the second a Tyrod Taylor completion to rookie Kesnick Chisolm moved the sticks a second time but the possession would not generate a third first down, and the Bills punted for a touchback. On Seattle’s first play of the game, Alden found nothing up the gut, but was able to bounce outside, put rookie DE Stavros Quinn on the ground, and slip the grasp of Stephon Gilmore to win a footrace to the end zone. Buffalo’s second series was a three and out on a sack, followed by another punt for a touchback. Russell Wilson handed off to Avery on the next play. After making a textbook cut, Avery also eluded the clutches of Gilmore, and the Seahawks were up 14-0 with 160 rushing yards on two plays. The Bills then reached a 4th and 1 at the Seattle 26, and elected to take the three points rather than try to convert. The kickoff went for a touchback, and Christine Michael was sent in to see if he could become the third Seattle back to score an 80 yard TD, but he only got 5 yards. The Seahawks could not get the other 5, and punted. On the first play of the second quarter, Kam Chancellor stripped McCoy and Jordan Hill recovered the fumble at the Seattle 36. The Seahawks went three and out again, then the Bills did as well, but that was on an interception by Brandon Browner at the Seattle 45. The the takeaway was converted into Josh Freeman’s 20 yard touchdown strike to Paul Richardson, and the Seahawks’ next series was capped by a Freeman-to-Doug Baldwin TD of 13 yards, putting the Hawks up 28-0 with 7:40 still remaining in the first half. A Dan carpenter field goal of 31 yards with two ticks to spare made it 28-6 at the break.

With the Seahawks holding such a commanding lead, it was decided to let Josh Johnson play the second half. He made TD tosses to Michael and Baldwin to extend the rout to 42-6, then the Legion of Boom got in on the scoring with a 16 yard fumble return by Chancellor. That brought mass substitutions for the Seahawks, who still managed to notch one more Johnson-to-Baldwin TD before the second team defense allowed the final tally on a 43 yard Carpenter kick.

Fred Alden gives Stephon Gilmore the slip on the way to his 80 yard TD.

“I can do that too”: Wayman Avery weaves his way through traffic before also pwning Gilmore.

                        PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

                        The Fab 5, Week 11

                        1. GREEN BAY PACKERS (9-1)

                        Juggernaut.

                        2. NEW YORK JETS (8-2)

Sweep of Pats makes it 7 staright since a close loss at Seattle.

                        3. SEATTLE SEAHWKS (8-2)

Russell Wilson’s absence was keeping the Hawks out of this group. But with Seattle outscoring its opponents 86-9 in the last two games, that can no longer be the case.

                        4. HOUSTON TEXANS (8-2)

Authoritative win over the Jags has them one step closer to clinching the AFC South in back-to-back seasons for the second time in the last six years.

                        5. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (7-3)

Beat Boris Crisp and the Broncos with Nick Foles at QB.

                        Week 12 Games To Watch

                        Packers (9-1) vs. Texans (8-2)

A potential SB LI preview. Can anyone stop the Pack though?

                        Redskins (5-5) vs. Eagles (6-4)

Every team in the NFC East will have a winning record if the surging Skins prevail.

                        Jets (8-2) vs. Bengals (7-4)

Gang Green’s winning streak has reached 7 games. Can the Bengals end it?

                        Cowboys (6-4) vs. Ravens (7-3)

Dallas has been stuck at 6 wins for a month now. Can the Boys pull out of their tailspin, or are they going to auger in?

                        Seahawks (8-2) vs. Cardinals (6-4)

Having rebounded from a humiliating home loss to Seattle by gaining and NFC West tie with LA by beating the Rams, the Cards are looking for payback that will close the gap to one game.

                        Crisp Courting History

Denver’s Boris Crisp is the current favorite to win the NFL’s 2016 MVP award. If he does snag the prestigious hardware, he will become the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to do so, and the first of any kind since 1981 (Lawrence Taylor) to do so. On other rookies have been named MVP- Earl Campbell in 1978 and Jim Brown in 1957.

                        Foles Outplays Crisp

While Crisp on a good day is a legit MVP candidate, this week he was outplayed by Nick Foles as the Chargers put themselves back in the AFC West lead with a 3 point win over Denver, the same margin of victory by the Broncos in the first meeting. It was Foles' first start since 2015 and his first since Mike McCoys benching of Philip Rivers. Foles completed 24 of 29 attempts for 209 yards and 2 TD's for a rating of 119.6 (nearly double Rivers' season mark). Crisp, while not shabby by any means, trailed at 33/40 for 248 yards and a TD for a rating of 100.8. If Foles manages a consistent return to the form landed him a Pro Bowl nod, Rivers may be playing elsewhere in 2017, and such a development would be one of this season's most surprising and surreal stories.

                        Dat NFC East Doe

After the first month of play, it looked like the Cowboys and Eagles were going to run away and hide from the Redskins and the G-Men, and vie with each other for the NFC East title. That has turned out to be very much not the case. Dallas and Philly have fizzled, with the Boys mired in a four-game losing streak and the Eagles going 1-4 since their 5-0 start. Meanwhile, New York and Washington have recovered from poor starts to make it a four-team race. The Giants are currently one of the hottest teams in the league, having gone 6-1 since digging themselves an 0-3 hole, and the Skins have been almost as impressive, winning four of their last five.

This week's Monday Night Football game brings us a Seahawks-Cards rematch, 15 days after the Hawks blanked Arizona down in the desert. This is a critical meeting for the Cards, who could pull to within a game of the Seahawks. Arizona has yet to lose on the road, but Seattle has won its last two games by a margin of 86-9. Pete Carroll just needs to keep the team that lost to the Pats and Bucs from showing up.

Thanks for checking in. I have some catching up to do as I'm getting ready to play my Week 17 game. I'm hoping to get through the playoffs and the draft before M17 arrives.

                                Sweeping Arizona

Two weeks ago the Arizona Cardinals failed to score in a home loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The Cards fared little better in this weekend’s visit to Seattle, putting up only 10 points against the Seahawks’ nastily stingy D. The two-touchdown victory gives the Seahawks (now 3-0 in the NFC West) a season sweep of Arizona by a 54-10 margin, and they have outscored their opponents 110-19 over the last three games- with Russell Wilson in street clothes. Seattle got the win despite committing 5 of the sloppy game’s 9 turnovers. All the giveaways really only cost the Seahawks the only touchdown they have surrendered in the last three games, which put Arizona up 7-3. In addition to turning the ball over 4 times, the Cardinals cost themselves 3 point with poor clock management at the end of the first half, with the clock running out on the play that might have preceded a field goal attempt, had that play not taken so much time.

The score was tied at 10 when, at the 1:23 mark of the third quarter, rookie Fred Alden scored from a yard out. He had also given the Seahawks their first TD on a 73 yard dash with 8:16 remaining in the first half. Alden, however, had only 35 yards on his other 14 runs, and Wayman Avery also found yards hard to come by, averaging only 3.6 per carry. Starter Josh Freeman struggled in the early going and gave way to Josh Johnson. It was Johnson who sealed the victory with a 19 yard touchdown pass with 7:36 to go. The Cards were perched at the Seattle 1 at the 2 minute warning, but turned the ball over on downs.

When it comes to defensive rookie of the year talk, DB’s and linebackers get most of the ink, but not has played better than DT ShelDon Hayes, Seattle’s 5th round steal.

Reserve linebacker Dondre Tracy records a sack-fumble combo.

Fred Alden’s 73 yard run put the Seahawks up 10-7.
