Hawks Dirty Up Birds In Opener

Mentor Pete Carroll took former assistant Dan Quinn to school in the Seattle Seahawks’ 2016 season opener. Quinn’s Atlanta Falcons managed to draw first blood, but never scored again, succumbing to a second quarter implosion in which they committed four of their five turnovers. Amassing 422 yards of total offense, including 296 on the ground in the first game of the post-Beast Mode era, the Hawks racked up 50 points for the first time since doing so in back-to-back weeks on Dec. 16th and 23rd, 2012 against the Bills and Cardinals. While second year man Wayman Avery scored twice, it was rookie Fred Alden who led the team in rushing, carrying 18 times for 123 yards.

In the game’s first two possessions, Steven Hauschka missed a 51 yard field goal attempt, while rookie Brody Prewitt got Atlanta on the board with a 44-yarder. The Seahawks responded by driving to Russell Wilson’s 13 yard TD toss to Fenton Ellis. The Falcons then went three and out, and after Ellis’ punt return to the Atlanta 48, Avery scored his first touchdown from 4 yards out. In that series, a Wilson sneak converted a 4th and 1 at the 28 and the Seahawks had to overcome a 1st and 18 resulting from a holding call assessed against Lemuel Jeanpirre. Hauschka’s 34 yard field goal with 6:24 remaining in the half was the conversion of a sack-fumble combo recorded by Michael Bennett and at 2:03 a 23 yard kick followed a Devonta Freeman fumble lost at the Atlanta 26. Richard Sherman’s pick-six came two plays after the ensuing kickoff, and the Falcons’ next possession lasted only one play, on which Cliff Avril and rookie DT ShelDon Hayes swallowed up Matt Ryan and spit out the ball. Avery capped the following 11 yard “drive” with a 2 yard run, and with 53 ticks left before the break, the Seahawks were already up 34-3. The Falcons began the second half with a three and out on another Bennett sack, and Seattle followed with Wilson’s 27 yard all-in-the air strike to Jermaine Kearse. The Seahawks reached the 50 point mark with 9 fourth quarter points on a safety and a 9 yard run by Christine Michael, which closed out the scoring with 8:31 to go.

            PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

            The Fab 5, Week 1

            1. DENVER BRONCOS (1-0)

Starting a rookie QB may have kept the back-to-back SB champs off the top of the list, but Boris Crisp’s debut keeps them there.

            2. GREEN BAY PACKERS (1-0)

The 2014 and 2015 NFC champs are still the best team in the NFC until someone else proves otherwise.

            3. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS(1-0)

After losing two straight NFC title games to the Packers, the Hawks began 2016 playing mad as hell.

            4. BUFFALO BILLS (1-0)

14-2 a years ago, the Bills spanked Chip Kelly in his Niners debut.

            5. DALLAS COWBOYS (1-0)

Out-shooting the G-Men gives them a leg up in the NFC East.

            Ten To Go

With Big Ben Roethlisberger posting a 33.6 rating (129 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT) in the opener, the Steelers now only need to lose the next 10 games to set a new NFL record for consecutive defeats. The current record of 26 is held by Tampa Bay, which has a sub-.400 all-time winning percentage.

Mosley Out-guns Red Rifle In Shootout

2016‘s no. 2 overall pick, Pat Mosley (31/43, 421 yards, 4 TD, 4 INT), led the Eagles to victory over Andy Dalton (32/47, 337 yards, 5 TD, INT) and the Bengals in a wild 41-38 game in which a total of 42 points were scored in the 4th quarter. Mosley’s numbers show he’s got NFL-caliber tools, but his 4 picks also could be indicative of the leap from FCS Saturdays to playing on Sundays.

            Boris Bad-azz-enov

Back in July some pundits predicted that barring injury, Mark Sanchez would make 16 starts for the Broncos in 2016. But rookie Boris Crisp seized the starting job before the end of camp and John Fox’s decision was vindicated by Crisp going 29/42 for 371 yards with 4 TD’s and a pick in Denver’s Thursday night hammering of the Jags.

            Battering Boyce

2015 Heisman Trophy winner Bret Boyce debuted with 132 yards and 2 tubs on 18 carries in the Redskins’ 31-20 victory over the Bears.

            Peace of Mind?

After Eli Manning’s early sidelining for the duration of the Giants’ opener, Ryan Nassib went 31/38 for 349 yards and 3 TD’s. That might bode well for the post-Eli era.

            Pass-Catchers of the Week

Three receivers hit double-digit catches on opening weekend, and were among the 6 who topped 100 yards:

            Tracy Owens, PHI: 9-166, TD
            Dez Bryant, DAL: 11-164, TD
            Demaryius Thomas, DEN: 10-158, TD
            A.J. Green, CIN: 9-147, 2 TD
            Tim Walters, CAR: 9-137
            Cole Beasley, DAL: 11-130, TD

              Game Notes
With the Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick still at a contractual impasse, Geno Smith has by default become New York's starting QB once again. While Gang Green thought enough of Penn St.'s Brennen Gaines to pick him in the second round, he's still very much a developmental project at this stage of his career. Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick is not likely to see the field this season unless some other team loses a starter for the duration and overpays Fitz to be a fill-in. Smith led the Jets to a 3-27 win over the Dolphins in week 1, completing 72% of his passes (24/33) for284 yards, 3 TD's and 2 INT. Matt Forte was a non-factor in that game gaining only 70 yards ond his 24 caaries for a paltry average of 2.9 yards. The winner of this game will be off to a 2-0 start, and while the Seahawks have the advantage of playing at home, they'll also be going on short rest after their Monday night opener.

"Don't Make Me Tell You Twice”

Seahawks Edge Jets In “Double Comeback"

Just a week after a 50-3 annihilation of the Atlanta Falcons, the Seattle Seahawks found themselves in a close-fought nip-and-tuck battle with the visiting New York Jets. The game was tied at 10 after three quarters, and the Hawks trailed 17-10 in the 4th before prevailing by a 20-17 margin.

After a 3-3 first half that included a missed 39 yard attempt by Seattle’s Steven Hauschka, the game’s first touchdown was scored by the Seahawks when rookie Fred Allen broke off a 40 yard touchdown run at the 9:23 mark of the third quarter. Just as they answered Hauschka’s first blood field goal, the Jets retaliated in the following series, with second year man Jarman Ellis catching a 10 yard pass from Geno Smith. Ellis then gave the Jets a 4th quarter lead with a 54 yard catch and run, torching Tharold Simon, with 13:33 to go. That play came three after Seattle opened the final frame with a turnover on downs at the New York 38. In the next possession, the Hawks got as close as the 2 without throwing a pass, but ultimately settled for a 19 yard gimme by Hauschka. After the Jets went three and out, the Seahawks came to a 4th and 5 at the New York 37, where Russell Wilson flat out missed Jermaine Kearse for what could have been a converting completion. Only 2:40 was left in the game and the Jets had an opportunity to run out the clock, but the Seattle defense forced a punt, after which the clock was down to 1:34 and the Hawks had no time outs left. Wilson had not been able to get the ball downfield all game, but when it was needed most, he was suddenly able to, and with 27 ticks left he hit Paul Richardson in the back of the end zone for a touchdown, but Drew Nowak had drawn a holding flag and the score was erased to the dismay of the 12th Man. Two plays later, Wilson and Richardson hooked up in the end zone again, and this time it counted. Richard Sherman picked off a Smith deep ball to end the game.

Alden eclipsed the century mark for the second time in as many games, going for 140 yards on 19 carries. An interception on the final play of the first half and a mere 178 passing yards left Wilson with a meager 79.8 rating for the day. Jimmy Graham had 10 catches while only Cooper Helfet and Danario Alexander had more than 1.

Fred Alden’s 40 yard dash at the 9:23 mark of the third quarter was the game’s first touchdown .

Paul Richardson’s touchdown catch that didn’t count...

                ...and the game-winner that did.

                            PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

                            The Fab 5, Week 2

                            1. DENVER BRONCOS (2-0)

Peyton who? Boris Crisp earned AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors and his 125.8 passer rating is second only to Andy Dalton’s 128.2. He’s also second in the league in passing yards and has a 7-1 TD/INT ratio. The defense is not going to have to carry this team.

                            2. GREEN BAY PACKERS (2-0)

Easily had their way with a 2015 playoff team.

                            3. BUFFALO BILLS (2-0)

It was child’s play defeating the Brady-less Pats.

                            4. DALLAS COWBOYS (2-0)

NFC East title defense going well so far.

                            5. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS(2-0)

Still unbeaten, but almost lost to Geno Smith, which earns a demotion

                            Mosley Does It Again

Some expected Eagles rookie QB Pat Mosley to stay on the shelf an incubate for all of 2016. But camp demonstrated that no incubation was needed, and that has been borne out through the first two games of the season. Mosley once again outplayed a more highly-touted opponent, this time Washington’s Kirk Cousins. Mosley completed 32 of 43 passes for 289 yards and TD, and avoided being picked off, for a rating of 99.8. Cousins was 29/40 for 303 yards, no tubs and two interceptions for a rating of 73.2.

                            Boys Deal McFadden to Indy

With the signing of free agent Alfred Morris and the first round selection of Ohio St.’s Dixon Hennings, Darren McFadden became something of an expendable odd man out. That status made it easy for Dallas to trade Run DMC to the Colts, who have lost the services of Robert Turbin for a least six weeks. McFadden came dirt cheap for Indy - a 2018 conditional 7th round pick.

                            Frederick Out For Regular Season

The Cowboys have lost center Travis Frederick for the duration of the regular season with a broken ankle. Because he could come back as early as the NFC title game, if the Boys make it that far, Dallas is presently holding off on placing Frederick on injured reserve. The trade of Darren McFadden was made to open a spot to sign a free agent substitute.

                            Rams 2-0 With Poteat

Although he hasn’t grabbed headlines the way Boris Crisp and Pat Mosley have, first overall pick John Poteat has helped the Rams get off to a 2-0 start. In a narrow 1 point win over the 49ers, Poteat was 32/48 for 346 yards, 4 TD and 3 INT (91.1 rating).

                            Osweiler Taking to O'brien's Offense

Most observers believed that the Texans vastly overpaid to acquire former Bronco Brock Osweiler, but Houston is off to a 2-0 start. On Sunday Oz completed 30 of his 44 attempts for 269 yards, 3 TD and 1 INT (97.6).

Not All of the Young Guns Are Flourishing

Turns out the Patriots don’t have a QB-proof offense. With Tom Brady’s suspension now half-finished, Jimmy Garoppolo efficiency rating is 40.8, 31st in the league, ahead of only the struggling Ben Roethlisberger’s 38.0. And while this was though to be the year Gus Bradley and his Jags would make a run at the AFC South title, Blake Bortles’ performance, or lack thereof (52.4 rating) has hampered the effort with losses in Weeks 1 and 2.
