    WILD CARD WEEKEND

    RAVENS 41, BRONCOS 38

35 total points were scored in a wild fourth quarter as Baltimore upset Denver. Peyton Manning was effective despite the Broncos’ injury-riddled offensive line, but his defense atypically let him down. A retirement decision now await the Sheriff, and it will impact Denver’s offseason. Starter-in-waiting Brock Osweiler has just completed a contract year and the Broncos need the Manning dollars to retain other key players. If Manning does the dumb thing and tries to play another year, it won’t be for the Broncos.

    P. Manning, DEN: 36/64, 374 yards, 4 TD, 2 INT, 81.1 rating
    D. Thomas, DEN: 8 rec., 126 yards, 3 TD
    J. Flacco, BAL: 29/46, 375 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT, 108.5 rating
    S. Smith, BAL: 9 rec., 138 yards, TD
    J. Everett (R), BAL: 8 rec., 121 yards, TD

    PACKERS 35, CARDINALS 31

Arizona outscored Green Bay 17-14 in the 4th quarter, but it wasn’t enough.

    A. Rodgers, GB: 35/52, 314 yards, 3 TD, 102.5 rating
    C. Palmer, ARI: 28/41, 285 yards, 3 TD, 112.3 rating

    CHARGERS 27, TITANS 17

One Cinderalla season continues, while another ends.

    P. Rivers, SD: 33/42, 260 yards, INT, 82.5 rating
    M. Tate(R), SD: 16-79, TD
    A. Stevenson (R), TEN: 21/32, 201 yards, TD, 2 INT, 67.7 rating

    EAGLES 27, RAMS 20

Neither team got the best of the Bradford-Foles trade, because neither played, but the Eagles were hurt the least by it.

    M. Sanchez, PHI: 27/38, 294 yards, 2 TD, 11.0 rating
    D. Murray, PHI: 17-109, 54 yard TD
    T. Watkins, STL: 28/43, 262 yards, 2 TD

      DIVISIONAL WEEKEND

      Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016 - 4:30

Baltimore Ravens (7-9) @ New England Patriots (12-4)

The Ratbirds backed into the AFC North championship and upset the Broncos, but this is where their luck should run out.

      Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016 - 8:00

Philadelphia Eagles (12-3-1) @ New Orleans Saints (14-2)

The Sanchize takes on another rookie QB, but Taylor Ingram has proven he’s ready to takeover for Drew Brees on a permanent basis, whenever that time may come. The Eagles won the teams’ regular season meeting, but that was in Philly.

      Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016 - 1:00

San Diego Chargers (11-3-1) @ Kansas City Chiefs (12-4)

The AFC West sent three teams into the playoffs, and one of them will play for the AFC championship, which will be in KC if the Chiefs are victorious. The underdog Bolts shook up the division during the regular season. Can they do it again with another road playoff win?

      Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016 - 4:30

Green Bay Packers (12-3-1) @ Seattle Seahawks (16-0)

The Seahawks were disappointed that they didn’t get to face Aaron Rodgers in what was supposed to be a revenge game back in Week 3. They’re getting him now for a chance at some “real” payback, and as “they” say, “be careful what you wish for”. During Seattle’s stretch run to 16-0, it became clear that it was going to take a playoff-caliber team to derail perfection, and now the Seahawks are facing the last team to have beaten them- which was also in the playoffs.

          Game Notes
These teams are developing quite a rivalry. The Packers defeated the Seahawks twice a season ago, including in the NFC championship game. In Week 3, with Aaron Rodgers out mending an injury, the Hawks punched the Packers in the teeth and kneed them in the groin. This time the Pack returns to Seattle with a healthy Rodgers, but he'll have to deal with the starting left side of his o-line being out. Only one of these teams can make a repeat appearance in the title game, and with the animosity running high on both sides, the respective records can be thrown out the window. The Seahawks may be 16-0, but the Packers could prove to be their nemesis once again.

            MANZIEL ARRESTED IN LAS VEGAS

Apparently Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was having a big night at the MGM Grand’s blackjack tables last night. Too big. In the wake of an incident at the Grand, Las Vegas authorities have booked Manziel on multiple charges including public intoxication, public indecency, destruction of property, assault and simple battery.

According to witnesses, Sr. Futbol was winning big with a young and attractive female dealer when a suspicious floorman moved the dealer to another table. Manziel soon moved to the dealer’s new table, after which the floorman and the pit boss asked Manziel to play with a different dealer for the remainder of the evening. Offended by the request and its insinuation, Manziel leaped onto the blackjack table, yelled “I’m Johnny f***ing Manziel", unzipped, and urinated on the table, spraying a couple of patrons before hitting hit mark (apparently he has accuracy issues there as well). When casino security was summoned, Manziel jumped down from the table, grabbed a chair and brandished it. Security was able to subdue Manziel before police arrived, but not before a Grand employee was struck above the eye by the chair. Upon law enforcement’s arrival, Manziel reiterated who he was, to which an officer responded, “OK Mr. Manziel, we’ll comp you a room down at the station.”

A Browns spokesperson said the organization will investigate the incident prior to issuing a statement.

There's some personal experience in that story, but it happened in Reno. While a student at Nevada I experienced the dealer-change thing (without incident). On a separate occasion at which I was not present, a friend got tossed from a casino for "wetting down" a blackjack table. After which he reported his car stolen. And after he bought a new car with the insurance money, his "stolen" car was found right where he had parked it in a garage the night of the incident, when he was too drunk to remember where it was.

                    Bears Introduce Chuck Pagano

The Chicago Bears have become the first team with a head coaching vacancy to fill it. In an afternoon press conference, former Colts head coach Chuck Pagano was introduced as the successor to Marc Trestman, who was fired 8 days ago after following an initial .500 season with two losing ones. Bears officials, certain of firing Trestman, had been following Pagano's situation in Indianapolis closely, and moved swiftly once his dismissal from the Colts was official. Unlike when he took over the Colts, Pagano inherits a team which already has his preferred 3-4 defense in place. That defense, though, was 31st in the league in points allowed and 30th in interceptions. Pagano vowed to "bring the monsters back to the Midway".

Lots of options with 32 team control, and I needed to get Manziel out of the league.

                        Coughlin Takes Niners Job

He'll be 70 before the 2016 season starts, but Tom Coughlin is not yet ready for retirement. Coughlin was introduced today as the newest head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. As an organization in a shambles, the Niners were not the most attractive opportunity out there and their options may have been more limited than other teams. In Coughlin they're getting a stern taskmaster who may be able to right the ship and turn it in the right direction. Coming to San Francisco with Coughlin is Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, who also interviewed for the head coaching job. DeFilippo's job title will be associate head coach and offensive coordinator, making it appear for all the world that Coughlin is a bridge hire. At his age Coughlin not likely in this for the long haul, but in DeFilippo he has someone he can groom to be his successor. DeFilippo was Coughlin's offensive quality control corrdinator in New York in 2005-6, years in which the G-Men went 11-5 and 8-8 and reached the playoffs both times. Most of his experience has been as a quarterbacks coach, and his candidacy to be Coughlin's eventual replacement will hinge not only on the overall success of the Coughlin regime, but on the play of the Niners' QB's. Handed Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert to work with (for the time being at least), DeFilippo is not in an enviable position, but he's escaping an even worse one in Cleveland, where the Browns are in all likelihood looking at another new starting quarterback in 2016.

We may never know if Coughlin was the first option- Chuck Pagano cancelled his scheduled interview after meeting with the Bears. A confidant of Pagano's has said that Pagano saw the Bears as a more stable organization than San Francsico, but it doesn't take much to be that.

Head coach in waiting? Tom Coughlin is
The Man for now, but one of his tasks
will be to prepare John DeFilippo for a
                        passing of the baton.

                          Colts Announce Hiring of Gase

It's a good time for Adam Gase to move on. He collected a Super Bowl ring a season ago, and with Denver losing to Baltimore in the wild card round Peyton Manning has played his last game as a Bronco whether he opts for retirement or not. By all accounts, Brock Osweiler is "good to go" as Manning's successor, but if he flops, it won't be with Gase as his offensive coordinator. Gase may be the one candidate for this year's openings who could have had his choice from among them all, so his selection of the Colts says a lot about which team he viewed as providing him with the earliest opportunity for success. He's inheriting a team which has gone to the playoffs in 14 of the 17 seasons since Manning's second year in the league, and of course one of the misses was the gap year between Manning and Andrew Luck. Indy fans are already hopefully speculating that a retired Manning would also join the organization in some capacity. That's pie in the sky. If Manning chooses to pursue a career in coaching or a front office, it's far more likely to be in Denver or even in his hometown of New Orleans.

Gase's hire was the second one of the day. Earlier the Giants confirmed the anticipated promotion of offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo to succeed Tom Coughlin.

Harold Goodwin is the Big Fish

With Divisional Weekend about to begin, the NFL's head coaching vacancies have been reduced to three (Cincinnati, Dallas and Detroit). This morning Dirk Koetter was introduced in Tampa Bay, and now the Miami Dolphins have announced the hiring of Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin. Goodwin has been Bruce Arians' OC for the past three seasons, years in which the Cards missed the playoffs despite a 10-6 record before being a wild card team in 2014 and 2015. He has been instrumental in turning Oakland Carson Palmer into Arizona Carson Palmer and the Fins are hoping that Ryan Tannehill can absorb some of that mojo. Goodwin played in a Michigan offensive line that included Pro-Bowler John Runyan and he is the brother of center Jonathan Goodwin, who was a Pro-Bowler in 2009. He began his coaching career as a GA under Lloyd Carr and has been an o-line coach with the Bears, Steelers and Colts. He also holds a bachelor's degree in management and communications from UM.
