    Bye, Kitty

The Seattle Seahawks have completed the first quarter of their 2015 season with their perfect record intact, thanks most recently to a 41-23 road win in Cincinnati. The Bengals put up a good fight until folding in the fourth quarter, when Seattle outscored Cincy 17-7. Russell Wilson and Andy Dalton each threw 33 passes and finished with a 1 yard difference between them, but Wilson bested The Ginger with 27 completions and 3 touchdowns. Marshawn Lynch was held below 100 yards, but amassed a very respectable 92 on 20 carries, while rookie Wayman Avery contributed 66 more yards on 13 attempts.

Wilson’s first TD pass, 12 yards to Cooper Helfet, capped the opening series, but in it Jermaine Kearse suffered a shoulder injury which is expected to keep him out of action for a month. The Bengals answered, with Dalton scrambling the final 9 yards to tie the score at 7. Seattles’s second series went into the second quarter, ending with Jimmy Graham climbing the ladder for a 9 yard touchdown catch. The Bengals then went three and out with Marcus Burley breaking up a pass for Dalton’s first incompletion in 5 attempts. An exchange of three and outs ensued, after which the Hawks moved the sticks once prior to a 29 yard Lynch run to the Cincinnati 32. Seattle got as far as the 11 before having to settle for a 28 yard Steven Hauschka field goal and a 17-7 lead. A 53 yard boot by Mike Nugent, coming two plays after a K.J. Wright sack, got the Bengals back within a touchdown. On the following kickoff, Avery chose to come out of the end zone, but only got out the 17. All that ended up meaning, however, was that the Seahawks’ next touchdown drive covered 83 yards, with Helfet bulling the final few yards for his second TD reception 28 ticks before halftime.

Seattle’s offense went stagnant in the third quarter, while the Bengals put a pair of field goals on the board to make it a 24-16 game. With Cincy now only a TD and a two point conversion away from tying things up the Seahawks got back into gear, driving 80 yards in 17 plays and scoring on Wilson’s 2 yard run and taking over 8 minutes off the clock. After a Cary Williams sideline pick at the Cincy 38, Hauschka made it a three-score game with a 25 yard gimme. Despite being down 18 points with 6 and a half minutes to go, the Bengals were not ready to give up, and they marched to Dalton’s 12 yard scoring pass to rookie tight end Neil Perkins. After a failed onside kick, the Hawk’s went the length of the short field, icing it with Derrick Coleman’s 3 yard run with 1:46 to play.

Who does this guy think he is, Russell Wilson?

Kevin Pierre-Louis’ sack forced the Bengals to settle for a field goal.

Rookie Wayman Avery put in another strong performance backing up Beast Mode.

Russell put it up where only Jimmy could get it, and Jimmy went up and got it.

          'Hawks Deal Turbin To 'Boys

The Seattle Seahawks have traded running back Robert Turbin to the Dallas Cowboys for Dallas' 6th round pick in the 2016 draft. With Demarco Murray having a career year in 2014, the Cowboys were 12-4 and champions of the NFC East. With Murray gone in free agency, Lance Dunbar hurt and Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden being unproductive, the Cowboys' running game has suffered and Dallas has stumbled out of the gates at 1-3. Over the past couple of seasons, it has been speculated that Turbin would eventually be Marshawn Lynch's eventual successor, probably in 2016. But Turbin was recently dropped down the depth chart in favor of undrafted rookie Wayman Avery, and, unhappy with that move, asked the Seahawks to assess other teams' interest in him. Drafted 106th overall by the Seahawks in the 4th round of the 2012 draft, Turbin is in the final year of his rookie contract, so the Seahawks are getting something for him now rather than have him walk away into free agency in 2016.

            Seahawks Sign Bryce Brown

With the bye week trade of Robert Turbin leaving a vacant roster spot, the Seattle Seahawks have signed former Eagles and Bills running back Bryce Brown. As a rookie in 2012 and with Shady McCoy out of action, Brown rushed for 178 and 169 yards in successive weeks for the Eagles. He finished his rookie season with 564 yards, averaging 4.9 per carry. In his second campaign he had 75 carries for 314 yards- a 4.2 average. Brown was part of a draft day trade that sent him to the Bills in 2014, but in Buffalo he saw the lightest work load of his career- only 36 carries over 6 games (after appearing in all 32 during his time in Philly), and in that limited action his average dropped to 3.5 yards per carry. He made the Bills' 53-man opening day roster, but after seeing no action in Week 1, he was waived on Sep. 15 and has been a free agent since.

                Scouting Update

                POTENTIAL FA LOSSES

                LT Russel Okung
                DT Brandon Mebane
                FB Derrick Coleman
                OLB Bruce Irvin
                RG J.R. Sweezy
                CB Jeremy Lane
                TE Cooper Helfet
                OT Allen Bailey
                CB Marcus Burley
                P Jon Ryan

With no game to report on this week, let's look at some of the college players that are drawing interest from the Seahawks. In our first brief look at next spring's crop, we looked at a couple of existing needs at center and right tackle. It will also be important to look at possible replacements for a good number of the potential free agents listed above. With the Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner extensions done, the hard financial reality is that several of these players will not be Seahawks in 2016. The scouting staff is especially focused on offensive linemen, not only due to current weaknesses, but because two more starters may be lost. If J.R. Sweezy stays with Seattle, it should be on a cap-friendly deal, but he may well receive more lucrative offers. The bigger question mark, however, concerns Russell Okung. When he's been healthy, Okung's blind side protection has not been an issue. But there's that "when he's healthy". Now in his 6th year in the league, Okung has not yet played a 16-game season. The given the available dollars, the Seahawks are going to be reluctant to sign him to a deal that he and his agent think he's worth. The Okung camp will deal from a performance standard, while the team will play up the injury history in looking for a discount, and the sides may be unable to reach an agreement unless some of the money is incentive-based for games played.

Brandon Mebane has been off the chain so far this year, but don't expect him to be in a Seahawks uniform next season. The big payday he deserves won't fit the team's budget. Ditto Bruce Irvin, who says he'll take less money than other teams will offer in order to remain a Seahawk. Despite what Irvin says, in the end money will talk and Irvin will walk. With Mebane, Irvin and most likely Marshawn Lynch off the books, the team should have enough wiggle room to to retain the other potential losses unless. They're all keepers who should receive offers from the organization. But since it seems like the LOB loses a corner every year, we might expect to see either Lane or Burley elsewhere in 2016.

Based on the team's recent history and this year's 4-0 start, picking in the latter third of the round is what is anticipated, making some of the prospects more likely to be wishful thinking. But players can slide for no other reason than the needs of the teams picking ahead of the Seahawks, and the team may feel compelled to attempt to trade up depending on how free agency goes. In order of current projections (by position), here are some potential future Seahawks:

                    PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Will The Saints Come Crashing Down?

The team with the NFC’s best record in 2014 is off to a 5-0 start, but is going to be without its driving force, QB Drew Brees, for the next two months. Brees broke his throwing hand late in the Saints’ victory over the Panthers, and now Sean Payton has a decision to make regarding who will be under center when the Saints next take the field. The organization is very high on rookie Taylor Ingram’s potential as Brees’ eventual successor, but is playing him now playing him too soon, with all of the risks doing so would entail? Matt Flynn is a known quantity. While he’s already proven, to the Seahawks’ gain in Russell Wilson, that he’s not franchise QB material. But he’s a decent, experienced backup who may be able to do enough to keep the Saints competitive. A game manager with experience, or a young fireball who could get doused if things don’t go well? Fortunately for Payton, he has the extra time provided by the Saints’ bye week to make his decision. If he sides with Ingram, the rookie will get his baptism of fire against the Legion of Boom in Seattle. No pressure.

                    Where Did That Come From?

Even if IK Enemkpali hadn’t broken his jaw, Geno Smith probably was not going to be the Jets’ opening day starter. This week the job fell to him due to Ryan Fitzpatrick’s injury, and all he did, with a short week to prepare for a Thursday night contest, was earn AFC Offensive Player of the Week Honors. If the performance wasn’t a fluke vs. a team in disarray, the Jets could have QB controversy brewing.

                      Game Notes
With model father Adrian Peterson back on the field, the Vikings have already won as many games as they did in 2014, and it looks like Peterson will be contending for another rushing title. But this team was also blown out by a Packers squad quarterbacked by Scott Tolzien, and it's W's are against the Chargers and the Lions. On paper the Vikes don't seem to be much of a threat to Seattle's unblemished record- which makes it a perfect scenario for an upset? The odds have to catch up with the Seahawks eventually, don't they?

                        Seattle 5-0

Another win is in the books for the 2015 Seattle Seahwks, who improved to 5-0 by defeating the Minnesota Vikings 21-14 on the road. The Hawks showed some bye week rust, not scoring until almost halftime, and with Marshawn Lynch being held to 3.2 yards per carry by a stubborn Minnesota defense. A collective game ball was earned by the Seattle defense, which sacked Teddy Bridgewater 7 times and picked him off twice, and did not let itself get run over by Adrian Peterson. Uncharacteristically, AD only got 14 carries, on which he gained 59 yards for a 4.2 average.

Russsell Wilson was sacked three times in the opening possession, which ended with Jon Ryan punting out of bounds at the Minnesota 4. The Vikings were 2 yards away from a 96 yard drive when Cliff Avril, with help from Jesse Williams, recorded a sack-fumble combo and then collected the pigskin at the Seattle 8. Given that the Vikes would later get the game’s first score but end up losing by a TD, it was a crucial turnover. The Seahawks reached their 44 before Ryn executed another coffin corner kick, putting the Vikings at their 7. The ensuing Minnesota series generated only one first down and saw left tackle Matt Kalil go down with a season-ending torn pectoral muscle. A shanked punt perched the Hawks at midfield, but the short field yielded nothing as Steven Hauschka missed a 47yard field goal attempt into a swirling 13 mph wind. The Vikings then made themselves the first team to get on the board, with Bridgewater connecting with Kyle Rudloph, who eluded both Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor on the 34 yard score. Going down 7-0 put some spark in the Seattle offense, and after an end zone drop by Ricardo Lockette on second and goal, rookie running back Wayman Avery scored his first NFL touchdown on a 7 yard pass from Wilson with only 41 ticks left in the first half.

It remained a 7-7 game until Lynch scored from a yard out at the 5:38 mark of the third quarter, and Seattle’s lead was subsequently expanded to 21-7 when Wilson tucked and ran 2 yards with 12:27 to go in the game. With the Seahawks marching toward a nail-in-coffin score in the late going, Lynch coughed up the ball, which was one-hopped by free safety Harrison Smith, who raced down the sideline for a 96 yard score. The unthinkable was prevented when Minnesota’s onside kickoff attempt failed and the Seahawks ran out the clock.

Rookie running back Wayman Avery’s first career TD came by air instead of by land.

Beast Mode’s touchdown run was set up by rookie Fenton Ellis’ 23 yard catch.

                            PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

                            The Fab 5, Week Six

                            1. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (5-0)
Tom, Hoodie & Co. are vintage Pats thus far.

                            2. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (5-0)
Even though he already had a Super Bowl ring, in 2014 Russell Wilson showed that he still had a maturation process to go through. We’re witnessing that process as the Hawks appear to be weaning themselves from Beast Mode and allowing Danger Russ to become the centerpiece of the offense. Oh, and defense wins championships.

                            3. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (5-0)
Goo goo g’joob. This looks to be the season KC fans have been waiting for since the arrival of The Walrus.

                            4. GREEN BAY PACKERS (5-1)
What “Super Bowl Loser Jinx"? Might be sitting at no. 2 at 6-0 but for Aaron Rodgers’ injury. With Rodgers healthy, the defending NFC champions may still be the team to beat in their conference.

                            5. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (5-0)
On the list due to their 5-0 start, but might not be here by the time they cut the cast off Drew Brees’ throwing hand.

It’s Just A Scratch (This Time)

When “Sam Bradford” and “knee injury” are in the same sentence, “IR” is usually there too. This time, however, the Eagles, who have their bye week coming up, don’t expect the injury to keep Bradford off the field any longer than it already has.

                              Game Notes
With Drew Brees mending a broken hand, Sean Payton has decided to go with rookie QB Taylor Ingram over veteran backup Matt Flynn (who was hoping for a chance to going against his former team and the QB that put him out of a starting job). Payton said, "I've been singing this kid's praises so much, it's time for me to put up or shut up. And I'm not worried about this him getting shell-shocked over the next few weeks. There's not a man on the team that's mentally tougher than he is, and we've got him surrounded with enough talent to keep him from getting David Carr Syndrome. Houston took artisnal bread and made a s*** sandwich with it. That's not happening here. Taylor's taken the reins and is running with them, and our players have bought in."

As to how it happened, if Ingram is indeed a third round steal, Payton said, "Taylor played on a team that wasn't good enough to let him reach his full potential as a college quarterback, so he got blown off by some teams because he didn't have gaudy numbers. Those were the teams that didn't watch his game film or go to his pro day."

But no matter how good Taylor is, or turns out to be, it's going to be an uphill battle for a rookie making his first start against the LOB. Mark Ingram can help him by having a big Monday night, but the Seahawks currently have the top rushing defense in the league. The Saints really, really want revenge for last year's playoff loss, but it's not likely to happen.

                                NO, Nawlins

Is Taylor Ingram the New Orleans Saints' franchise QB of the future? He very well could be. Making your first career start against the Legion of Boom would be a daunting task for any rookie signal-caller, regardless of draft position. The unheralded third-rounder was unfazed, however, displaying poise, accuracy, moxie and a big arm. And he did not turn the ball over. Unfortunately he got little help from his so-called friends. Yes, he throws significantly harder than his injured mentor, Drew Brees, but that extra velocity doesn’t excuse some of the drops that were seen during ESPN’s Monday Night Football contest. And Ingram had nothing to do with the New Orleans defense’s inability to stem the Seattle onslaught. The Saints were down 21-0 less than a third of the way through the second quarter, through no fault of Ingram’s, forcing the New Orleans offense to become one-dimensional, which can cause fits for even a veteran QB. NO, Saints fans. You can’t say your team lost because Brees was hurt. Your team lost because as a whole it simply did not play nearly well enough to win. The future looks bright for Taylor Ingram, but a splashy debut won’t be part of his career. His teammates, and the Seahawks, saw to that, with Seattle handily taking the battle of unbeatens by a margin of 34-10. We dat.

After Marshawn Lynch got the Seahawks on the board with a 5 yard run in the opening series, Ingram’s first professional pass sailed high, possibly attributable to adrenaline. Ingram the running back (Mark) lost yard, then a screen pass from Ingram to Ingram lost 3 more yards, making the rookie QB’s first possession an inglorious three and out. The Seahawks made it two scores in as many series with Russell Wilson hitting Doug Baldwin for an 8 yard TD. Seattle 14, New Orleans 3 plays. The Saints’ second drive opened with Ingram’s first completion for positive yards, 8 to Brandon Coleman, then Mark Ingram moved the sticks. With the Saints in a 2nd and 10, Marques Colston dropped an on-target pass that should have been caught for a first down despite contact from Earl Thomas. On third down, Ingram went too long on a deep ball that left no doubt about his arm strength. With Chris Davis breaking up a pass intended for Jimmy Graham for Wilson’s first incompletion, the Seahawks went three and out, but Jon “Safety Coordinator” Ryan put his punt out of bounds at the New Orleans 1. After a 4 yard run by Mark I., Taylor I. connected with tight end Josh Hill with a perfectly thrown ball for a gain of 28, providing an example of why Sean Payton is so high on him. But thanks to a sack by K.J. Wright, this drive also ended with a punt, which dribbled into the end zone for a touchback. On the next snap, Wilson laid one in to a WIDE open Graham, resulting in an 80 yard score and a 21-0 Seattle lead with over 12 minutes remaining in the half. Seattle’s next series began in the red zone after Brandon Mebane’s sack-fumble combo and Wright’s recovery and return to the 17, but things bogged down a yard away from paydirt and Steven Hauschka’s gimme put the Hawks up 24-zip halfway through the second quarter. The remainder of the half was a stalemate and the third quarter went scoreless, but the 4th started with Lynch’s second TD, scored from 2 yards out. The Saints followed with a punt, but on the play after it, Wayman Avery lost a fumble at the Seattle 19. Blessed with an extremely short field, the Saints finally broke their goose egg, converting the turnover into Kendall Hunter’s 2 yard touchdown run. The teams then exchanged field goals, and after a failed onside kick by the Saints, Seattle ran out the clock.
