With 10 playoff spots already claimed, all that remains to be found out from Week 17‘s games is who will represent the AFC North and who will get the NFC’s second wild card. The tight AFC West and home field have yet to be decided, but we do know that the Broncos, Chargers and Chiefs are all playoff-bound.

Kelly Says Sanchez Is Eagles’ Playoff QB

At the time of his latest injury, Sam Bradford had a passer rating of 80.5, completing 65% of his passes but having 11 interceptions against his 8 touchdown passes. Since taking the helm, Mark Sanchez has thrown 10 TD’s vs. 3 picks with a completion rate of 68% for a rating of 100.3. Bradford has been cleared to play, but Chip Kelly says he’s sticking with Sanchez throughout the playoffs. The number do support the decision, one which makes it certain that Bradford will be hitting the market as a free agent in 2016.

      Foles or Watkins?

The other QB involved in the St. Louis-Philadelphia trade, Nick Foles, also stands to lose his job to an injury. While Foles has been out, rookie Trent Watkins has been getting steadily better, with his efficiency rating now standing at 95.5, with 13 TD’s, 8 INT’s, a 70% completion rate and 7.4 yards per attempt. When he went down, Foles was at 82.8, with 12 TD’s, 9 INT’s, a completion rate of 64% and 6.3 yards per attempt. With Foles now cleared to play, Jeff Fisher has yet to name his Week 17 starter, but the Rams are in a win-and-in situation with respect to the playoffs, and common sense says stay with the hot hand.

        Game Notes
And here we are... It's Week 17, and the Seahawks have become just the second team in NFL history to win their first 15 games. Standing in the way of the Hawks matching the 2007 Patriots' 16-0 are the San Francisco 49ers, who will be brushed aside like a clingy ex-girlfriend. The Niners have been a drive-by shooting at a train wreck. Peppered with departures and riddled with injuries, it's hard to recognize the squad that will be taking the field on finale Sunday. A good half-dozen players who were on the streets no more than two weeks ago will be suiting up for San Fran. Normally a team with home field already locked up would be resting a bunch of people, especially against such a bunch of sad-sacks, but (dramatic pause) there's that one minor detail to take care of. It would be a catastrophe of Biblical proportions if the Niners were to somehow beat the Seahawks, which is why it ain't gonna happen. Hollywood might script a David v. Goliath ending in such a scenario, but Jim Tomsuala has already proven he can't even script a lunch order. Pete Carroll said he'll go mass subs if the Hawks go up by 21. Let's hope that's no later than mid-second quarter.

          Mission Accomplished (Phase I)

No NFL team goes into a season with a goal of going 16-0, at least not realistically. The goal is always to win the division, hopefully with a first round bye for the playoffs. Yes, 16-0 is a nice thing to dream or speculate about as a season-opening winning streak grows, and if it grows long enough, it may become an additional goal, but somebody always comes along to be the spoiler. 16-0 never happens, unless you’re the 2007 Patriots. Or the 2015 Seattle Seahawks. While the 2014 Seahawks reached the NFC title game before failing in a bid for a Super Bowl repeat, it was considered a down season at 10-6, with outside help necessary to win the division in Week 17. With the offseason came the loss of Boomer Byron Maxwell and two-fifths of the offensive line, followed by a questionable draft. Going into the season, the Seahawks would have been considered very lucky to have merely matched the 2013 Super Bowl team’s 13-3 record. But, overcoming a hot-and-cold Marshawn Lynch and a right tackle that waves at opposing pass rushers as they go by with a stifling defense and with Russell Wilson committing the fewest turnovers of his career, the Seahawks won early and often, and kept winning to the point that 16-0 did become a goal. And with a 38-3 brush-aside rout of the woeful San Francisco 49ers, that goal was accomplished- Seattle stands as just the second team in NFL annals to go 16-0. But, even in a lopsided defeat, the Niners did manage to find a way to be a thorn in Seattle’s side yet again. Head coach Pete Carroll had set a 21 point lead as the threshold for mass substitutions, and while the Hawks established a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, it still took until the 3:17 mark of the third for the advantage to expand to 21. That was thanks to Seattle failing to score in the second quarter and to the Niners breaking the shutout with a third quarter field goal prior to rookie Wayman Avery taking a screen pass 11 yards for a score. Even against Seattle’s subs, the 49ers continued to experience scoring futility. They did once get as close as the 2 in the late going, but Colin Kaepernick- possibly playing playing his final game in red and gold- threw a goal line pick. As for Beast Mode, who is as yet undecided about playing in 2016, he picked up what may have been his final regular season 100-yard game, going for 101 and a TD on 17 carries before being withdrawn for the remainder of the game.

While 16-0 can be considered a mission accomplished, in his post-game meeting with the press, Carroll put it into perspective:

“16-0 is one hell of an achievement, one our entire organization is extremely proud of. But our work is hardly done. We played those 16 games to get to where we are now- the playoffs. The law of averages says we’re way past due for a loss, but the difference now is that a loss can do what it couldn’t over the last four months- prevent us from reaching our ultimate goal. At the end of the day, 16-0 is meaningless if it doesn’t lead us to another ring.”

Bryce Brown had his best game as a Seahawk, rushing 13 times for 71 yards.

                  WILD CARD WEEKEND SCHEDULE

                  Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016 - 4:30

                  Denver Broncos (12-4) @ Baltimore Ravens (7-9)

The Ravens backed into the AFC North title despite a Week 17 loss to the Rams, simply because the rest of the division is even more of a hot mess than they are. A loss last week to surprising San Diego cost the Broncos another AFC West title and has them on the road as a wild card, but they should have no trouble advancing to the divisional round.

                  Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016 - 8:00

Arizona Cardinals (11-5) @ Green Bay Packers (12-3-1)

This is a game in which home field might be the deciding factor. The Packers might have found themselves in trouble down in the desert, but should prevail at home on the Frozen Tundra against the indoor-playing Cards.

                  Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016 - 1:00

San Diego Chargers (11-3-1) @ Tennessee Titans (11-5)

There can be only one. 2015‘s two most surprising teams go head-to-head. Given that San Diego ran the AFC West gauntlet and emerged with a wild card while the Titans may simply only be the least-bad team in the AFC South, the Bolts should find themselves playing in the divisional round for the second time in three years.

St. Louis Rams (9-6-1) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (12-2-1)

The teams involved in the Sam Bradford-Nick Foles trade go against each other, but neither of them is going to start, both having lost their jobs to their injury replacemts, Trent Watkins and Mark Sanchez. Watkins getting the Rams to the playoffs in their final season in St. Louis made a nice story, but it’s just going to be too tough for them to win in Philly against a stronger team.

Caldwell is already gone, fired after a 42-10 Thanksgiving loss to Da Bears.

If there is no Megatron in Detroit in 2016, everyone will see that he was Stafford's crutch.

                      Marc Trestman, Bears

It’s probably a safe bet that Hall-of-Famer Bud Grant will remain the only coach to find success in the NFL after doing so in the CFL. Trestman failed miserably in the transition, leaving the Bears worse off than they were when the fired Lovie Smith. Let this be a cautionary tale to owners going forward.

                      Marvin Lewis, Bengals

When you follow a 0-5 playoff run by missing them two years in a row, especially this year when nobody in the division had a winning record, it’s time for a change. The team may riot, but only because many of them know the next coach won’t put up with what Lewis has.

                      Lovie Smith, Buccaneers

A surprise to some, who think Smith didn’t get enough time to get things turned around. Showed a 4-game improvement from a year ago, but that only leaves him with a 2 year record of 6-26. It may be that this is a move is calculated to allow the promotion (and thereby, retention) of offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, who did great things with rookie QB Donfred Curry.

                      Chuck Pagano, Colts

Wow. Winning seasons and playoff appearances in his first three years didn’t give Pagano enough bank to save himself from a .500 campaign and a postseason absence. In 2015 the Colts were anything but strong, particularly on defense, which is supposed to be his forte, and with the Texans going 2-14 and the Jags 3-13, all the Colts had to do was be better than the Titans, and that didn’t happen. The growing rift between Pagano and his superiors ultimately end with a mutually agreed-upon parting of ways. Nevertheless, Pagano should find himself a strong candidate for one of the other vacancies. Insiders are saying that with Peyton Manning expected to retire after this season, Bob Irsay has his sights set on Broncos OC Adam Gase.

                      Jason Garrett, Cowboys

Those who thought his hire was a bad idea in the first place have been vindicated. This year he did not have the excuse of an injured Tony Romo for not making the playoffs. In 5 full seasons, he went to the postseason only once, and 20% is not what is expected of the man in charge of American’s team.

                      Joe Philbin, Dolphins

Last year’s 9-7 record was his only winning season in four, and this time he finished in the AFC East cellar. That’s behind the Bills and Jets.

                      Jim Tomsula, 49ers

Most coaches get more than a year, but the 49ers have already had enough of Tomsula's buffoonery.

                      Tom Coughlin, Giants

Coughlin has two Super Bowl rings with wins over the Patriots, but the G-Men have not won a playoff game since 2011. When this season went south, he fell under enormous pressure. Deciding he’d had enough, he submitted his resignation. He’ll turn 70 before the 2016 season starts, and age may be a factor to some organizations, but if he wants to keep coaching he should at least get some interviews.

                      Jim Caldwell, Lions

Just a reminder that Caldwell was fired on Black Friday, following Detroit’s 42-10 Thanksgiving loss to Chicago. On a side note, the Lions finished last in the league in rushing with less than 800 yards.

                          PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

                          The Fab 5, Week Seventeen

                          1. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (16-0)
Like Pete Carroll said, 16-0 will be rendered meaningless by a postseason loss.

                          2. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (14-2)
If anybody can stop the Seahawks...

                          3. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (12-4)
Dethroned Denver in the West and has the AFC’s home field.

                          4. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (12-4)
Would be 14-2 but for being swept by the Bills.

                          5. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (12-3-1)
                          SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (11-3-1)
                          DENVER BRONCOS 12-4

Philly got caught napping in a tie with the Giants, but the Eagles are still the third-best team in the NFC. Denver and San Diego are part of the AFC West’s playoff trifecta, and things were too close to separate a clear no. 5. Green Bay (12-3-1) fell out of consideration thanks to getting tied by the Raiders and only managing to beat the Bears by a point. Tennessee (11-5) won a very weak AFC South and will get exposed in the wild card round.

2013 Seahawks Were Close To Perfect

The Seahawks are still chasing an historic 19-0 finish, and their 2013 Super Bowl run may have set a precedent for why it could happen. In their 13-3 season, they were a touchdown and a field goal short of 14th and 15th wins, and they were a TD short of going into overtime vs. the Cardinals in Week 16. One of Pete Carroll’s biggest jobs in the coming days is to keep his team focused on one game at a time rather than the Holy Grail of professional football.

                          Gruden Fires Joe Barry

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden has fired his defensive coordinator, Joe Barry. Barry was hired less than a year ago on Jan. 20, 2015. Under Barry, Washington finished 31st in the league in pass defense.

                          G-Men To Interview McAdoo

An internal hiring could be in the offing for the Giants. Offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo will be interview as a potential successor to Tom Coughlin.

                          Niners Meeting With Coughlin

The San Francisco 49ers have scheduled a meeting with former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, among others including Cincy OC Hue Jackson, Browns OC John DeFilippo, Bills running backs coach Anthony Lynn, and Tampa Bay OC Dirk Koetter. Koetter is likely to stay with the Bucs if he’s offered their HC job, and a more intriguing possibility is Coughlin and DeFilippo being a package hire. DeFilippo has also served as an offensive assistant under Coughlin in New York, giving rise to the possibility that he could be OC and “head coach in waiting” under the 69-year-old Coughlin.

Pagano Goes To Chicago For Interview, SF Next?

Chuck Pagano has interviewed to succeed Marc Trestman in Chicago, and has said he will also accept an invitation to talk about the San Francisco job if one comes. He has said that he would prefer to go to a team which already has a 3-4 defense in place. The would make the Bears and Niners the most likely possibilities, and may be one of the many reason why he turned down an interview offer from Detroit.

                          Gase Has Many Suitors

Denver offensive coordinator Adam Gase may be the hottest commodity on the coaching market. He has interest from the Bears, Bengals, Colts, Cowboys, Dolphins, and Lions, and will meet with them all unless he accepts an offer before getting around to all of them.

Carmichael to Interview With Cowboys and Lions

Saints OC Pete Carmichael Jr. has confirmed that he will be interviewing for the vacancies in Dallas and Detroit. Carmichael is considered a QB guru, and it just so happens that the Cowboys will be transitioning from Tony Romo to his eventual successor in the foreseeable future. His presence couldn’t hurt Matthew Stafford, either.

                            For the record:

I've played multiple seasons in most versions of Madden from '01 forward. I've done multiple long-running franchises here and at other sites like it. And in all that time I've only had one other 16-0 season.

I'm actually embarrassed by the 16-0 and would rather have taken some losses.

The season began with the same settings I went 10-6 on, and I've been tweaking them to the CPU's favor in an effort to avoid 16-0. It just didn't happen.

Having started the 2016 season already (playing catch-up with my updates), I can already guarantee it won't be another 16-0.
