UGA's Hightower Heads Top 5 Of 2016 Draft Class

The college football season is already underway, and so is speculation about the 2016 draft class. Currently projected to be the top overall pick is Georgia defensive tackle De'Antre Hightower. Hightower is a disruptive penetrator who has been wreaking havoc on SEC offenses since his sophomore season. With just 279 pounds on his 6'-4" frame, Hightower has room to bulk up to contend with blockers at the next level.

Close behind Hightower is the player who will go to one of next year's quarterback-needy teams, Wisconsin signal-caller Kurt Stead. Round out the top 5 are Pitt left tackle Angel Vega, Tennessee OLB Alexander Trammell, and UCLA pass rusher Doran Locke.

And who are the Seahawks looking at? Here are some possibilities:

    Christian Jennings, C, Alabama (6-1/297)

Projected as a top 10 pick, Jennings may be beyond the Seahawks' reach unless the season goes horribly wrong, or they trade up, which they're not known for under the current regime. But with career backup Lemuel Jeanpierre starting in place of the traded-away Max Unger, center is definitely one of the key areas in which the Seahawks will need to improve, and centers going in the top 10 is the exception rather than the norm.

Bjoern Dennis, C, Florida St. (6-0/293)

Projected as a late first-rounder, Dennis is a more realistic option at center. Although he's an excellent all-around blocker, he's a bit under-sized and needs to continue to improve his upper-body strength.

Ulysses Gabbert, RT, Montana St. (6-5/347)

In addition to the above-mentioned centers, the Seahawks are scrutinizing what's said to be a tackle-rich crop. If they were to miss out on a center in the first round, they should be able to land a nice consolation prize at OT. But say they do get Dennis in his projected neighborhood. Right tackle Garry Gilliam should not be starting for any team in the league, particularly one that lives by a power running game. The Bobcats' Gabbert would be a nice second round fit. Currently projected 64th overall, Gabbert is a "big mauler" who excels at run blocking, while needing some improvement in both pass blocking and strength.

        Game Notes
During the offseason, the Lions lost Ndamukomg Suh and Nick Fairley from the interior of the defensive line, and acquired Haloti Ngata. That's a net loss, and defensive signal-caller Stephen Tulloch will be MIA due to an ankle injury. That should benefit a Seattle team that has yet to test its restructured (and admittedly weakened) offensive line in a regular season game. Defensively, the Seahawks are returning 10 starters, and that should be the deciding factor in this game. A Seattle win is expected, but it shouldn't be a cake walk.

          Lion Tamers

Seattle fans who thought the Seahawks were going to have an easy time of it in the season opener at Detroit were forced to think again. This game was a grind. Just ask 2014 rushing champion Marshawn Lynch, who was held to under 4 yards per carry despite toting the rock a whopping 33 times. Although they scored in the game’s initial possession, the Seahawks got knocked sideways temporarily, trailing 10-3 after the first quarter, and needed a spark from the LOB to shift the momentum back to their favor. After the game narrowed to a field goal difference at the end of the third- and after Matthew Stafford was put out of commission- the Hawks dominated the fourth quarter to leave the Lions’ den with a 29-17 victory.

After the Seahawks drove to an early field goal and the Lions went three and out, Seattle’s second series ended on its first play when a scrambling Russell Wilson coughed up the pigskin. Gifted a short field, the Leos were soon in a first and goal at the 3 after an Eric Ebron catch, and Theo Riddick scored from a yard out on third down. Detroit got a short field for the second time in as many series when a Seattle 3 and out was followed by a facemask penalty on the punt return, putting the ball at the Hawks’ 46. The Lions marched into the red zone again, but Seattle’s defense stiffened and held the damage to a field goal. The Seahawks’ next drive ended with Glover Quin picking off a Wilson deep ball, which probably would not have been thrown had the Hawks not been in a 3rd and 18 after a sack. Detroit failed to convert this time, however, because Jeremy Lane read a screen pass, picked it off, and took it to the house. Going back to the first preseason game, the LOB now has a pick-six in 5 consecutive contests. A missed opportunity ended the Lions’ ensuing possession. On 3rd and 2, Riddick dropped a pass in the flat with nothing but green in front of him. Thus spared, the Seahawks went on the move, and on the first play after the two minute warning, Robert Turbin bolted 17 yards to the Detroit 22. Beast Mode followed with an 11 yard run, but on 3rd and 7 at the 8, Wilson missed Jimmy Graham at the goal line and the Seahawks came away with only a field goal that gave them a 13-10 halftime lead.

The second half began with Brandon Mebane’s sack putting the Lions in a 2nd and 17, but Stafford dug them out of it with completions to Corey Fuller and Megatron. The drive sputtered, however, and after the punt Wilson directed the Seahawks to his 11 yard swing pass TD to Turbin. Detroit answered with a similar play, with Stafford and Riddick hooking up for a 12 yard score that made it a 20-17 ballgame. Unfortunately for the Lions, Stafford was brought down hard on the play by Ahtyba Rubin, landing on his throwing shoulder. Although the Lions expect Stafford to start next week, his opening day had come to a premature end. The Seahawks punted out of their next series, due to a sack by DeAndre Levy, but Jon Ryan put it out of bounds at the 5 and two plays later Dan Orlovsky was sacked in the end zone for a safety. Following the free kick, Seattle marched to Lynch’s 6 yard score for a 29-17 advantage. With Orlovsky at the helm, the Lions were ineffective, and in its final clock-grinding possession, Seattle reached the Detroit 4 before Wilson took a knee to end the game.

Jeremy Lane’s pick-six on Matthew Stafford’s attempted screen pass to rookie Griffin Dawson got the Seahawks headed in the right direction.

Theo Riddick’s drop cost the Lions a big play- and probably a touchdown.

The incomparable Megatron holds on to another spectacular catch.

Robert Turbin was on the receiving end of Russell Wilson’s first touchdown pass of the season.

              PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Tolzein Leads Pack to “Upset” of Rams

With both Aaron Rodgers and Eddie Lacy out of action, the line on the NFL’s Thursday night season opener between Green Bay and St. Louis made the Rams a 4 point favorite. But Scott Tolzein defied the odds and the oddsmakers. Despite throwing 3 picks, Tolzein was able to lead the Packers to a 30-27 victory, completing 33 of 47 passes for 374 yards and 3 TD’s.

              Taylor Vindicates Rex's Decision

There were a lot of doubters concerning Rex Ryan’s naming of Tyrod Taylor as the Buffalo Bills’ starting quarterback after a training camp battle with Matt Cassel and E.J. Manuel. There should be fewer misgivings about the decision after Taylor posted the best passer rating (130.4) of all 32 starting quarterbacks on opening weekend. Taylor went 20 of 27 for 192 yards and 3 TD’s.

Last season these teams split the series and the division race between them went down to Week 17. That's expected to be the case again this year, and with the Rams and 49ers losing on opening day, the winner of this game will already be the only unbeaten team in the NFC West. While the Seahawks slugged out a win in Detroit last week, the Cards cruised to a 41-7 win over the Falcons, with Carson Palmer throwing 4 TD's, 3 of them to Larry Fitzgerald. With Arizona playing on the road on short rest, the oddsmakers are liking the Seahawks.

                  Razing Arizona

For the second week in a row, the Seattle Seahawks found themselves trailing at the end of the first quarter before taking over the game to claim a victory. That early deficit came on Carson Palmer’s 76 yard touchdown pass to Larry Fitzgerald, but that was the high water mark for the Arizona Cardinals, as the LOB cooled down a QB who was one of the hottest in the league on opening weekend. Palmer ended the game with a completion percentage below 50%, and with their passing game struggling and their running game notoriously impotent, the redbirds were low-fliers that made easy pickings.

During the second and third quarters, the Seahawks scored 23 unanswered points. They took a 14-7 halftime lead on Russell Wilson’s 10 yard pass to Cooper Helfet and Marshawn Lynch’s 1 yard dive. After receiving the second half kickoff, the Seahawks drove to another rushing touchdown- 4 yards by Christine Michael- and the Seattle defense recorded a safety for the second week in a row, with Palmer getting sacked in the end zone after Jon Ryan’s coffin corner punt. Those points were the last ones for the Seahawks, who, in a fourth quarter as exciting as watching paint dry, seemed more interested in grinding down the the clock than running up the score. In the late going, the Cardinals had an opportunity to make it a 6 point game. After eking out a field goal in their penultimate possession, Arizona reached the red zone before turning the ball over on downs, leaving the Seahawks to close out their 23-10 victory with more clock-grinding.

Tolzein Has Become The Latest Hot-Topic Backup

The Green Bay Packers are 2-0 thanks to the surprising play of backup QB Scott Tolzien. The former Wisconsin Badger made a couple of unremarkable starts in 2013, but didn’t see the field at all last year, and came into his Week 1 start with a career rating of 67.1. But in his first two starts of 2015, Tolzien has been more than just a game-manager in a quarterback-proof offense. n He’s torched opposing defenses for almost 700 yards and thrown 5 TD passes. In keeping the Pack afloat while Aaron Rodgers is on the mend, and doing so in such gunslinger fashion, Tolzien has become the toast of Title Town and the latest backup-to-possible starter for another team story. If Tolzien keeps it up against the Legion of Boom in Seattle on Sunday, that kind of talk is going to heat up even more and GM’s of QB-needy teams are going to start sending out feelers.

                      Texas Toast: Foster On IR

Houston running back Arian Foster, who only played 8 games in 2013, has landed on the IR again, this time due to a torn pectoral. That’s terrible news for a team which lost Andre Johnson and which still has an unresolved question mark at quarterback. On the bright side, the Colts are also 0-2 and the other teams in the division are the Jags and the Titans.

Although this injury won’t have any impact on Foster’s future running ability, he’ll turn 30 before 2016 opening day and there were already health concerns about him, and the Texans would be well-advised to plan on finding a new workhorse.

                        Game Notes
The Seahawks have been looking forward to this one since the 2015 schedule came out, and although the Legion of Boom would love to cool down hot-topic backup QB Scott Tolzien, to a man the players would rather extract payback for last seasons two losses- including the NFC title game- from a fully healthy Pack squad.

It wouldn't hurt the Seahawks' cause if "Disappearing Doug" Baldwin, who has 1 catch for 7 yards in the first two games, finds a way to get involved with the offense.

                          Seahawks Slaughter Packers

It was a battle of unbeatens and a rematch of the 2014 NFC title game, but it looked like anything but. Scott Tolzien got his Cinderella slipper shattered, suffering a Tony Romo (broken collarbone), but the defending NFC champion Green Bay Packers were already down 14-0 when he got hurt. In for Green bay came Mr. Irrelevant 2012, Chandler Harnish. Harnish looked very much the proverbial deer in the headlights, and the Seattle defense has some of the largest headlights in the league. Harnish often appeared afraid to throw the ball, holding it until he had nowhere to run. The Hawks finished the game with 8 sacks, the Pack with zero touchdowns, and the end result was a 45-6 rout.

Tolzien was picked off by Cary Williams on the game’s second play from scrimmage, and with a facemask penalty tacked on to the return, Russell Wilson took his first snap of the day at the Green Bay 13. On 3rd and 8, Wilson hit Doug Baldwin for a touchdown. That was the beginning of a big day for “Disappearing Doug”, who only had 1 catch for 7 yards in Seattle’s first two contests. Following a Green Bay punt, Wilson and Baldwin hooked up for another TD, this time a wide receiver screen that went for 4 yards. The Packers then reached the red zone for the first time, getting a first and goal on a catch by Jordy Nelson, who was injured on the play and was done for the day. Unable to punch it in, Green Bay had to settle for getting on the board with a 28 yard Mason Crosby chip shot. With the Seahawks firing on all cylinders, Marshawn Lynch scored on a 59 yard run, the second-longest regular season carry of his career. Tolzien sustained his injury in the ensuing Green Bay series, on a sack by K.J. Wright. An exchange of punts followed, with Jon Ryans’s going out of bounds at the Packer 11. A three and out gave the Seahawks a short field, which was taken advantage of with the third Wilson-to-Baldwin touchdown, a play of 10 yards that had Wilson at 12-for-12 for 119 yards and the Seahawks up 28-3 at the half.

With the Seahawks cruising, Lynch was withdrawn after he achieved a 100-yard game, and undrafted rookie Wayman Avery, healed from his preseason wrist injury, got his first career carries. He acquitted himself well, picking up 52 yards on 11 attempts for a 4.7 average.

                              PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

                              Rodgers Cleared To Play

Green Bay’s medical staff has given its blessing to Aaron Rodgers making his first start of 2015, and not a moment too soon. With early-season wonder boy Scott Tolzien suffering a broken collarbone in Seattle this weekend, the choice at QB would have between Mr. Irrelevant 2012, Chandler Harnish- coming off an abysmal relief performance vs. the Seahawks- or the recently-signed Christopher Tracy, a rookie out of Wyoming. Tracy was selected by the Dolphins in the 7th round of the draft, but was included in the Fins’ final cut-down when the team decided to carry only 2 QB’s. Tracy tweeted that it was a decision the Dolphins would come to regret. Eddie Lacy has also been cleared to play when the Pack hosts Dallas in Sunday night’s nationally televised game.

                              Double Whammy

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have now matched last year’s win total by somehow managing to defeat the Carolina Panthers, but it was a costly victory. Down went QB Donfred Curry (arm) for 3-4 weeks and running back Doug Martin (ankle) for two moths. Curry could be hoping the job will still be his when he’s healed up- through two-plus games the 2013 Heisman winner had yet to throw a touchdown pass.

After 3 weeks of play, the Seahawks are one of the four remaining undefeated teams in the league. The Bengals arent't one of the others, and Russell Wilson>Andy Dalton, especially with Dalton facing the LOB. That's not to say the Bengals don't have a realistic chance to burst the Hawks' bubble, but the Magic 8 Ball says "very doubtful".
