The college football season is already underway, and so is speculation about the 2016 draft class. Currently projected to be the top overall pick is Georgia defensive tackle De'Antre Hightower. Hightower is a disruptive penetrator who has been wreaking havoc on SEC offenses since his sophomore season. With just 279 pounds on his 6'-4" frame, Hightower has room to bulk up to contend with blockers at the next level.
Close behind Hightower is the player who will go to one of next year's quarterback-needy teams, Wisconsin signal-caller Kurt Stead. Round out the top 5 are Pitt left tackle Angel Vega, Tennessee OLB Alexander Trammell, and UCLA pass rusher Doran Locke.
And who are the Seahawks looking at? Here are some possibilities:
Christian Jennings, C, Alabama (6-1/297)
Projected as a top 10 pick, Jennings may be beyond the Seahawks' reach unless the season goes horribly wrong, or they trade up, which they're not known for under the current regime. But with career backup Lemuel Jeanpierre starting in place of the traded-away Max Unger, center is definitely one of the key areas in which the Seahawks will need to improve, and centers going in the top 10 is the exception rather than the norm.
Bjoern Dennis, C, Florida St. (6-0/293)
Projected as a late first-rounder, Dennis is a more realistic option at center. Although he's an excellent all-around blocker, he's a bit under-sized and needs to continue to improve his upper-body strength.
Ulysses Gabbert, RT, Montana St. (6-5/347)
In addition to the above-mentioned centers, the Seahawks are scrutinizing what's said to be a tackle-rich crop. If they were to miss out on a center in the first round, they should be able to land a nice consolation prize at OT. But say they do get Dennis in his projected neighborhood. Right tackle Garry Gilliam should not be starting for any team in the league, particularly one that lives by a power running game. The Bobcats' Gabbert would be a nice second round fit. Currently projected 64th overall, Gabbert is a "big mauler" who excels at run blocking, while needing some improvement in both pass blocking and strength.
