      Hawks Hammer Cheats

The Seattle Seahawks’ 2015 preseason opener was a successful one on the scoreboard, but it did not determine much personnel-wise. With 10 of 2014‘s defensive starters returning, the offense will be undergoing much more scrutiny. In the “Battle of the Joshes” for the no. 2 quarterback spot, the initial edge has to go to Freeman. Getting just one quarter of work, Freeman completed 10 of 14 passes for 99 yards, including a 31 yard TD to Robert Turbin. Over a full game, that extrapolates to 40 completions and nearly 400 yards. Johnson was also mostly on target, completing 75% of his passes (12/16) for 183 yards, but he also threw a pair of late interceptions which did not help his cause. With the focus of the offense being on the QB’s and receivers, there was not much of a running game to speak of and little opportunity to being assessing the the impact of the losses of Max Unger and James Carpenter on the ground attack, but the pass protection was good enough for the Joshes to be effective.. Johnson ended up being the leading rusher with 36 yards and a TD on 6 carries, and that aspect of his game might have put him ahead in the position battle if not for the picks. No receiver’s performance really stood out, unless you count a 66 yard touchdown reception by Chris Matthews, who had only one other catch. Danario Alexander’s comeback attempt began with him being a co-leader in receptions with 5, but he only averaged 7.8 yards per catch, far below his career number. The performance of the Seattle defense was book-ended by 1st and 4th quarter pick-sixes. Newcomer Carey Williams ended New England’s first series by grabbing a Tom Brady pass and taking it 22 yards to the house, and Ed Reynolds to his pick 40 yards for a score with 1:33 left in the game.

        Re: Pete And Repeat

Should be less delay between this game report and the next one. I had to play the first preseason game before I could work on the rosters of the other teams, and the latter is the reason for the gap in posts.

I've been going through each team's roster and moving players to free agency/retirement or to their 2015 teams. Players waived injured and no longer on a roster will end training camp on the roster of the team they were on at the time, if space allows, as will players who were simply cut. I have notes on mid-season signings and rosters will be tweaked as the season progresses. I've done a few trades a little prematurely for my convenience. That work is complete through the Rams, leaving Ravens through Vikings (minus Seahawks) to do before getting to the next PS game.

Still undecided on how to handle the backfield situation. I began this thinking Turbin would be Beast Mode's successor this season but I stuck with real life by keeping Lynch around although he's not in the plans for 2016. Turbin might still be with the team had he not had the high ankle sprain and injury settlement which led to his release. Some have said he has the physical skills to be an elite back but he doesn't have the brain to match. Michael was traded away to Dallas but has made a roundabout trip back to the team. I'm actually surprised the game didn't retire Fred Jackson and I'm on the fence about having him on the team as a one and done. If I'm going to pick up one of the former Bills backs, I think I'd rather have the younger Bryce Brown. I also have yet to spot a UDFA who looks like a suitable Thomas Rawls alter-ego.

Tough end to the playoff run. Looks like you're doing a lot of work before the next season, will be interesting to see how it plays out with the stand ins.

PRESEASON WEEK 1 INJURIES OF NOTE

Cardinals WR Jaron Brown has suffered a torn biceps which is expected to keep him out of action until late October.

Chargers wideout Keenan Allen is done for exhibition play with a toe injury but is expected to be able to play on opening day.

Giants RT Justin Pugh has a back injury which is expected to kep him out of action until the latter half of October, and DE Damontre Moore has been placed on injured reserve with a torn pectoral.

Green Bay's Eddie Lacy's ankle sprain could cost him the first 2 games of the regular season.

Danny Amendola of the Patriots has suffered an arm injury which will sideline him until early October.

Ravens DE Timmy Jernigan has gone on the PUP list with a broken hip. Although he may get cleared to play sometime in December, the wait may be so long that he ends up on IR. Baltimore also has lost backup QB Jimmy Clausen to broken ribs which are expected to keep him out of action for a month.

Titans D-lineman Al Woods (shoulder) is out for the rest of the preseason but probable for opening day.

Vikngs WR Charles Johnson (hip) is slated for a mid-October return.

Rookie Contributions, Big 4th Quarter Carry Seattle To Victory Over Carolina

Not much was seen of the Seattle Seahawks’ new crop of players in the preseason operner, but this week they collectively showed their stuff in a 27-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Wayman Avery, an undrafted rookie out of Western Michigan who was not even on the roster when the team last took the field, was the Seahawks’ leading rusher. Fenton Ellis, who is clearly winning his return specialist battle with Joe McKnight, enhanced his resume with a touchdown catch. On defense, second round pick Jamaal Rock and UDFA linebacker Morgan Pickett combined for 3 sacks, two of those by Pickett.

The game was tied at 10 after 3 quarters, but the 4th was all Seattle. After Steven Hauschka booted the Hawks into a 13-0 lead, Ellis’ 12 yard catch from Josh Jones provided some cushion, and veteran newcomer Cary Williams slammed the door with his second pick-six in as many games.

Toughest part was that after getting so far, we never were really in that final game.

Rosters were a lot of work but worth it even if only for my own personal immersion. And I only had to use (so far) 1 player who is out of place. Caleb Sturgis (RL injury replacement for Parkey of the Eagles) is kicking for the Jags because I ran out of rookies.

PRESEASON WEEK 2 INJURIES OF NOTE

Bears DE Lamarr Houston (elbow) and LT Jermon Bushrod (hip) are both going to be out until early/mid October.

Chiefs LT Eric Fisher (hip) is expected to miss the first 3-4 games of the season.

Philly's DE Cedric Thornton (ankle) is looking forward to an early October return. Meanwhile, ILB Mychal Kendricks, who suffered a torn PCL in 2014, is skipping exhibition play but looks to be green-lit for the regular season.

Lions RB Joique Bell is ecxpected to be out until sometime in the first half of October.

And it looks like it's going to be Week 3 before Aaron Rodgers (groin) makes his first start of 2015.

Rock wasn't bad for late second round and gets good game prep XP. Ellis, despite being a 59 OVR, looks like he'll be solid in the return game while I work his OVR up- he also gets good game prep XP. The rest, though, are indeed ouchers.

Seahawks Remain Unbeaten In Exhibition Play

With the Seattle Seahawks’ projected starters getting their most extensive playing time of the preseason in the “dress rehearsal” game at Buffalo, things went mostly according to plan. Despite concerns over a weakened offensive line, Russell Wilson was sharp, compiling a 122.6 passer rating by completing 16 of 19 attempts for 175 yards and a touchdown, and Marshawn Lynch averaged 5.8 yards per carry with 70 on a dozen totes. Seattle’s defense recorded 7 sacks (3 by rookie Jamaal Rock) and the Bills would not have found the end zone all day but for a busted coverage on Marquise Goodwin’s 67 yard catch and run. And with an easy 10 yard return, Marcus Burley gave the LOB its third pick-six in as many games. The cumulative effect was a 34-9 victory in a game which would have been even more lopsided had a scrambling Wilson lost lost a pair of fumbles in scoring territory. Aside from Wilson’s ball security lapses, the most disappointing aspect of the game was that rookie running back Wayman Avery sprained a wrist on his second carry, costing him what was slated to be some significant time running behind the first team offensive line.

Tyrod Taylor competing for the starting job in Buffalo has been one of the biggest surprises coming out of any training camp.

Promising rookie Wayman Avery was going to see significant time with the first he had he not sprained a wrist on his second carry.

Three exhibition games into his comeback bid, Danario Alexander (who led the team in receiving yards) says he’s just now getting warmed up and that his body feels the best it has since his senior season at Mizzou.

                          Seahawks Complete “Dreaded Undfeated Preseason"

Will the 2015 Seattle Seahawks fall prey to the curse of the dreaded undefeated preseason? There’s a superstition throughout the league that finishing exhibition play with an unblemished record is actually a dubious achievement that forebodes upcoming struggles in the games that count. Is it really superstition, though? Statistics seem to lend the notion some merit. At the very least, a 4-0 preseason record should never be taken to forecast an upcoming playoff appearance. According to the esteemed Elias Sports Bureau, during the period of 2000-2014, teams that went undefeated in the preseason won an average of 7.8 games, making them virtually indistinguishable from winless preseason teams, which averaged 7.6 wins. And do you remember those infamous 0-16 2008 Detroit Lions? Yes, they went 4-0 in their preseason. Our 2013 Super Bowl champion Seahawks, however, were one of the three teams in that time period to win at the Big dance after being 4-0 in exhibition play, and the first since the 2003 Patriots. The Hawks, therefore, are confident that all their 4-0 record means is that they went out and did what they were supposed to do, which they fully intend to continue doing in the regular season, which begins for them in Detroit on September 13th.

                            Top Training Camp Stories

                            Eli on the Wane?

In 2014, an injury to Eli Manning didn’t prevent the Giants from being a 12-4 wild card, thanks to the play of backup Ryan Nassib. And apparently, the aging process is being less kind to Eli than it has to his big brother, and he was pushed relentlessly by Nassib during camp. Observers contend there was a genuine position battle which finished in virtual dead heat, with Manning getting the nod only because Coughlin and co. are not yet ready that he’s no longer franchise QB material.

Jazz Everett Beats Out Darius Goode

Former SMU star Darius Goode was the first round pick of the Baltimore Ravens, who later revisited the wide receiver position in the 4th round, when they picked up Drake’s Jazz Everett. Despite being a 4th-rounded out of a FCS program, Everett outclassed Goode in every conceivable way during training camp, and now he’s the Ravens’ no. 2 wideout on the opening day depth chart. Goode, meanwhile, will be in the slot, but it’s said he’s in peril of losing that spot to Marlon Brown. An unnamed source within the organization said “Jazz is a natural, but Darius is going to have to work for everything he gets.”

Saints May Already Have Brees’ Successor

Sean Payton and the rest of the New Orleans organization couldn’t be more pleased with their 3rd round pick, former Miami Hurricane QB Taylor Ingram. Ingram not only sent fellow backup Luke McCown packing, Payton said what he saw of Ingram during camp makes him confident that he already has his hands on Drew Brees’ heir apparent. In fact, while Matt Flynn remains in the no. 2 spot on the depth chart for the time being, the feeling is that if Brees were to go down for an extended period, Ingram will get a chance to show what has the Saints camp buzzing.

Injuries of Note From Preseason Weeks 3-4

Denver DE’s Malik Jackson (ribs) and Demarcus Ware (ankle) are expected to be out until Week 3.

Colts TE Coby Fleener (groin) looks like a no-go for the rest of September.

Dallas is even thinner at RB now with Lance Dunbar (ankle) out for an estimated 6 weeks.

Jacksonville’s already weak defense will be minus one of its best players, DT Sen’Derrick Marks (knee), for what is expected to be over a month.

The anchor of the Jets’ defensive line, nose tackle Damon Harrison, will miss more than a month with an ankle injury.

Houston’s Brian Cushing (broken leg) begins the season on the PUP list and is expected to miss half of the 2015 campaign.

McKnight, Rogers Fail To Make Final Cut

Reclamation projects Joe McKnight and Da'Rick Rogers were among the casualties of the Seattle Seahawks' final cut-down to 53 players. Although he ran the ball effectively at times, McKnight was beaten out for the return specialist spot by third round pick Fenton Ellis, and his spot on the running back depth chart was lost to undrafted signee Wayman Avery, who impressed the coaching staff despite seeing limited preseason action due to a wrist injury. Rogers behaved himself during camp but finished the preseason as the lowest-graded receiver on the roster.

The Seahawks also jettisoned their 4th round pick, offensive tackle Adam Trammell- a dubious accomplishment given the state of the o-line, and another roster spot was cleared by the trade of wide receiver Kevin Norwood to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a conditional 6th round pick in the 2017 draft.
