    Seahawks Stumble In Philly

A road game on short rest was considered a factor in the Seattle Seahawks’ Week 13 Thursday night overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers, but the extra preparation time following that setback did not help them rebound from it on a road trip to Philadelphia. A see-saw battle with the Eagles ended with Corey Parkey booting a walk-off field goal that dropped the Seahawks to 8-5 and contributed to the tightening of the NFC West race. The Rams also fell to 8-5 with a loss, while Arizona improved to 7-6 with its second straight win. The consecutive setbacks were the first back-to-back losses for Seattle since Weeks 7 and 8 of the 2012 season.

Kam’s Pick Saves Seahawks From Collapse

In the span of less than a quarter, the Seattle Seahawks went from a double digit lead to being on the verge of losing three consecutive games for the first time since 2011. The Hawks had kept the Niners out of the end zone for over three quarters, taking a 6-3 halftime lead and holding a 13-3 advantage going into the final frame. The lead expanded to 20-3 before San Francisco broke its touchdown goose egg with a pair of quick scores to suddenly make it a close affair, and the Hawks appeared to have fizzled out. The Niners were driving toward a late tying field goal, or worse, a go-ahead score, but the comeback bid was foiled by Kam Chancellor’s end zone interception, after which all that was needed to seal the win was running out the clock.

Hawks Turn Over NFC West Lead To Cards

An unlikely turn of events over the past four weeks has landed the Arizona Cardinals in the catbird’s seat in the NFC West and has left the Seattle Seahawks needing some outside help. After 12 weeks of play, surging Seattle was atop the division with a record of 8-3, with their most recent victory, over Arizona, giving them a two game lead over the Redbirds. The Cardinals were also looking up at a 7-4 St. Louis team from third place, with five games remaining in the regular season. Week 16 is now in the books, and while the Seahawks have endured their most unsuccessful four weeks since the first half of the 2011 season- in which the Hawks were 1-3 and 2-6 before turning things around- the Cardinals have become the team that is surging toward the NFC West title. After dropping further to 6-6, Arizona has now won three consecutive games, including this weekend’s 34-29 victory over the Seahawks, which was more dominant than the final score indicates. The teams now have identical records of 9-6 and both are most likely playoff-bound, but the Cards enjoy a division record of 3-2, while Seattle is 2-3 vs. the West. Now all Arizona has to do to claim its first division crown since 2009 is not lose to San Francisco in its regular season finale, and without help from the Niners, the Seahawks will be facing the prospect of having to win three road playoff games if they are to repeat as champions of the NFC. There also remains the necessity of defeating a halfway decent Rams team for the Arizona-San Francisco tilt to have any relevance in the NFC West race, and that the two games will be taking place simultaneously will only add to the tension for the Seahawks.

More than any other opponent this season, the Cardinals were able to put the clamps on Seattle’s normally powerful running game. League leader Marshawn Lynch was held to a meager 33 yards on 13 carries, and that Seattle’s workhorse toted the rock only 13 times while QB’s Russell Wilson and Josh Freeman threw a total of 51 passes is a testament to how early things went south of the border. The Seahawks did not find the end zone until after Wilson, who committed 3 of the team’s 5 turnovers, got the hook. And had Freeman not been briefly shaken up, his performance may have been more than cosmetic. The first of Freeman’s 2 touchdown passes got the Hawks within striking distance of a comeback at 27-22, and they were driving toward a possible go-ahead score when Freeman was very slow to get up after a sack. Freeman returned after clearing concussion protocols and after little birds stopped circling his head, but in the interim Wilson threw a pick-six to Antonio Cromartie that was the last nail in the coffin. Freeman’s second TD toss made the score respectable but came too late to alter the outcome of the game.

Gotta do what Seattle did to Arizona in the real game and take that division crown.

This is the 2014 season and the finale is vs. the Rams. We need to beat St. Louis and for the Niners to beat the Cards in order to win the division. Should at least get a wild card though.

But if you recall, the West really did come down to Week 17 that season as Arizona and Seattle both went into it at 11-4 and the Seahawks beat the Rams while the Cards choked vs. SF. Let's hope history repeats itself.

                              Hawks Shear Sheep,
Repeat In West With Niners' Help

Going into the regular season finale, the Seattle Seahawks knew that their postseason fate was not entirely in the own hands. That did not prevent them from turning in their most dominant performance of the season, a resounding 42-14 victory over the St. Louis Rams which at the very least assured that there would be no three-way tie of 9-7 teams atop the NFC West and that the 10-6 Seahawks were playoff-bound. Whether they would be seeded as champs of the West or as a wild card was dependent on the outcome of the Cardinals-49ers game, which was being simultaneously played. At head coach Pete Carroll’s request, there was initially no public announcement or display of how that game was progressing. However, with the Hawks up 28-10 after three quarters, there was no more worry about the other game being a distraction. But as the Seahawks continued to take care of business on their end, that “other game” was a nip-and-tuck affair and was progressing at a slower pace than the blowout in Seattle. It was not until the team was in a festive locker room that they learned that San Francisco had prevailed over Arizona by a 26-20 margin and that they were champions of the NFC West and as such would be hosting the New York Giants in the wild card round of the playoffs.
