Saints to Release Brees Before Guaranteed Money Kicks In!

Drew Brees missed significant playing time in 2015, and while he was away, the Saints discovered they already had his successor on board in the person of 3rd round pick Taylor Ingram. Given the level of Ingram's play, New Orleans has decided to move on with Ingram as their QB of the future, and will remove Brees from the roster before his guaranteed money kicks in in a few days, freeing up cap space for free agency shopping. Head coach Sean Payton said that Brees will be released rather than traded so that he may sign with the team of his choice.

Browns to Part Ways With Manziel, Gordon

The Cleveland Browns have stated that when the new league year begins on March 9, QB Johnny Manziel and WR Josh Gordon will be released. Manziel's legal and personal troubles are likely to land him a significant suspension in addition to whatever the Nevada and Texas legal systems mete out to him. Given his troubles, which are now known to go far back, Manziel is likely to be a hot potato that no one is going to want to touch. The uber-talented Gordon is currently serving out a one year suspension but is expected to apply for reinstatement as soon as is permissible. By all accounts he has been a model citizen during his suspension, understanding full well that if he's reinstated, it will be his final chance for a NFL career. He'd be a high-risk, high-reward signing for whoever picks him up, and his list of suitors may me limited to bottom-feeding teams desperate for help anywhere they can find it. If the Browns are loathe to keep him, that should say something.

          Rams Set to Cut Foles

After trading for QB Nick Foles, the Los Angeles Rams inked him to a 2-year contract extension. As things developed, the play of rookie Trent Watkins while Foles was injured may that extension look like a bad idea. Watkins held on to the starting job after Foles was healed, and led the Rams to a wild card berth in their final season in St. Louis, which was their first postseason in 11 years. Foles is likely looking at a backup job in 2016, perhaps with a team which may try to restore him while sitting behind an aging veteran.

Seahawks Ink Okung To 5 Year Extension

At the beginning of the 2015 season, there was a lot of doubt as to whether left tackle Russell Okung would be a Seattle Seahawk in 2016. That's due in large part to his coming into the season as a five-year veteran who had yet to be available to play a full slate of games. He missed 6 games as a rookie and half a season in 2013. And when he was on the field, he hardly even sniffed a comparison to his predecessor, even though it's hardly fair to expect any player to be the next Walter Jones. But Seattle's coaching staff knew that his succession of injuries was hampering his play. This season, Okung was the healthiest he's been since coming to the NFL as the 6th overall pick in 2010. And the result was what had long been hoped for both from and for him. Starting all 16 games for the first time in his career, Okung earned his first Pro Bowl selection and was named the NFC's top offensive lineman. Sort of funny how that happened in a contract year, isn't it? Normally the accolades Okung received would boost his bargaining power, but one full season in six is hardly a benchmark for durability, and reason to temper Okung's expectations. But without him the Hawks would be venturing into a free agency period that is going to be lean at left tackle, and while the upcoming draft class is studded with quality prospects, they'll all likely be picked before no. 32 overall. And don't forget that right tackle is a glaring concern. Both an adequate substitute for Okung and a significant upgrade over Gary Gilliam might no be doable. Hence the Seahawks had plenty of incentive to deal with Okung in a manner benefiting him, and as a result, Okung will be in Seattle for another 5 years. At least that's the length of the contract extension. It remains to be seen if Okung was a contract year wonder, but the Hawks took the better safe than sorry approach. Okung's extension likely means right guard J.R. Sweezy, DT Brandon Mebane and linebacker Bruce Irvin will become free agents. Sacrificing up to three players of that caliber to keep Okung spotlights the team's priority in maintaining blindside protection for Russell Wilson.

Seattle Seahawks 2016 Re-Signings And Releases

              Players Re-Signed

              LT Russell Okung, 5 years
              RB Wayman Avery, 4 years
              FB Derrick Coleman, 5 years
              P Jon Ryan, 1 year
              LT Alvin Bailey, 3 years
              FS Ed Reynolds, 3 years
              WR Denarius Moore, 1 year
              SS Larone Benjamin, 1 year
              MLB Dondre Tracy, 1 year

The key to this group was Okung. Other than Avery, the rest were not deemed critical, but were nevertheless players the team preferred to keep rather than lose. Avery has shown flashes that give reason for optimism that he can carry the load for the rushing attack in the post-Beast Mode era.

Free Agents - No Offer Made

DT Brandon Mebane - a cost vs. age decision.

CB Cary Williams - a solid year in Seattle, but ditto.

OLB Bruce Irvin - the team was not going to match competing offers for the guy who played the fewest snaps among the defensive starters. It will be a shock if he winds up anywhere else other than back in his home state with former Seahawks DC Dan Quinn.

CB Jeremy Lane - might have stood a chance of promotion to full time with Williams' departure, but in an ideal Seahawks world he'd still be the nickel back come opening day, and somebody somewhere will be willing to pay him starter money.

RG J.R. Sweezy - a casualty of the Okung extension after his first Pro Bowl nod increased his bargaining power.

DE Demarcus Dobbs - depth at the position and the progression of rookie Jamaal Rock made him expendable.

WR Ricardo Lockett - turns 30 this year and despite his SB 50 touchdown he's a marginal player who can be easily replaced in the receiving corps.

TE Cooper Helfet - as a player with borderline starting potential, he requested that the team allow him to test the market.

CB Marcus Burley - deemed expendable with 2015 draft pick Xavius Hunt on the roster, with the thought being that a free agent will replace Williams, Super Bowl MVP Tharold Simon will be the nickel, and Hunt will become the new dime back.

Free Agents - Declined Team's Offer

RB Bryce Brown - the mid-season pick-up would have been given a fair shake to compete with Avery and Christine Michael for the top of the depth chart, but he wants to go onto the open market despite being an early season cut in 2015. This development does not rule out his return to Seattle.

OLB Morgan Pickett - while appreciative of the opportunity the Seahawks extended him as an undrafted free agent, Pickett wanted to go to a team that fields a 3-4 defense and where he might have a chance to be more than primarily a special-teamer.

                Niners Send Kaepernick To Philly

A shop artist's rendering of Kaep as an Iggle.

For the second year in a row, the Eagles have traded for a quarterback. With the Sam Bradford trade failing and Philly getting within a game of the Super Bowl with Mark Sanchez under center, Chip Kelly might have been wondering what might have been if he'd had a QB that could truly operate his system. Meanwhile, the 49ers were looking to accede to their contractual concession to Tom Coughlin by sending Colin Kaepernick elsewhere. In 2015 Kaepernick's QB rating as a starter reached a new low, and his interceptions reached a career high of 18, and things were dubious for him in the City by the Bay even before Coughlin's hiring. As this might be the only destination where Kaepernick can revive his flagging career, Kaep should now be a much happier camper. To get him, the Eagles only had to give up a conditional 5th round pick in the 2017 draft, but some Philly fans are still dismayed. Addressing them, Kelly said, "Say what you want about him, but he's still got more playoff wins than Andy Dalton and more NFC titles than Tony Romo."

                  MEGATRADE

From the get-go, many suspected or at least speculated that Calvin Johnson's retirement talk was a ploy intended to leverage a trade. Then Johnson admitted that he'd be amenable to playing again in 2016 if "the right trade" could be made. In other words, Megatron had probably truly reached the Barry Sanders point of his career, preferring premature retirement to playing another season in Detroit, but he also wouldn't mind a legit shot at a ring. And so, Johnson is off to New England in a match made in Patriot fan heaven. This is 2007 all over again, with Tom Brady getting a receiver that can make the difference in whether he gets another ring before he retires. Despite the title above, this is not the blockbuster trade it would have been with a Megatron in his prime, but it's still the biggest event of the offseason to date, trumping the Saints' release of Drew Brees. The cost of acquiring Johnson was the Pats' second round pick in May plus their 2017 3rd round selection, and the trade is voidable if Johnson does not restructure his contract (as was the case with the Randy Moss transaction) or if he retires prior to opening day. In the later case, the Lions would receive New England's 2nd round pick in 2017. With their first round pick stripped as a result of "Deflategate", the Patriots will now not be picking until the third round of the 2016 draft.

For got to include Jermaine Kearse in the FA list. The game had him with a year left on his contract but he's up for FA IRL this year, so I released him after the re-signings. The comment on letting him walk would have been he's not as good as he thinks he is and the team his fine with letting Paul Richardson and Fenton Ellis step up.

No Splash From Hawks' First FA Signing

The Seattle Seahawks have made their first free agent signing of 2016, but it's not one over which the rest of the NFC West will lose any sleep. The signing of former Mississippi St. Bulldog and Dallas Cowboy Cameron Lawrence is essentially an invitation to training camp. Lawrence will get to compete for the reserve linebacker/special teams role that was held in 2015 by the departed Morgan Pickett. He held a similar role with the Cowboys, ho signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2013. In his junior and senior seasons at MSU, he was second and third in the SEC in tackles. Dallas placed him on injured reserve on July 25, 2015 and released him three days later. Making the 53-man roster may be a longshot for him, but Pete Carroll likes hungry players.

Lawrence is actually the second new Seahawk of 2016- cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste, the 58th overall pick in the 2014 draft, was signed to a reserve-futures contact on February 8th.

The Schwartz Is With The Seahawks

The odds of the Seattle Seahawks investing their first round draft choice in a right tackle may have just decreased. The Hawks have signed Mitchell Schwartz, formerly of the Cleveland Browns. The California native who played his college ball in Berkeley was the 37th overall pick in the 2012 draft. Schwartz made all 32 starts of his first two seasons and was named to Pro Football Focus' All-Rookie Team, but he then missed a total of 18 games in 2014-15 and health concerns are one reason why he was not re-signed by the Browns. A healthy Schwartz would be an easy bet to supplant Gary Gilliam, the only starter in the Seahawks' o-line who was not a Pro Bowl selection (because he was one of the league leaders in sacks allowed).

The Seahawks were hoping to see Schwartz play side-by-side with his older brother, right guard Geoff, but the elder Schwartz has signed with Buffalo. Despite this acquisition, Seattle is still in pursuit of higher-profile right tackles including Donald Stephenson and Andre Smith.

Seahawks Welcome Casey Hayward To The #LOB

The Legion of Boom just got better than it was in 2015 with the signing of former Green Bay cornerback Casey Hayward to a four year contract. Hayward has played in 51 games with 20 starts since being the 62nd overall pick in the 2012 draft, and would have more starts had he not on a team with a talent-laden secondary that has included Tramon Williams and Sam Shields. He has 9 career interceptions, including a pick-six. Six of those interceptions came in his rookie season, when he did not allow a touchdown, giving opposing QB's a league-low QBR of 31.1 according to PFF. The other 3 INT's came in 2014, when PFF ranked him as the league's 9th-best corner. The Packers still have so much secondary depth that Hayward was deemed non-essential, but he was viewed as having enough talent to start for over half of the teams in the league, which made him of the most sought-after free agent corners.

No one knows who will emerge victorious from a battle to succeed Marshawn Lynch as the Seattle Seahawks' primary running back in 2016, but we do know Bryce Brown will be one of the contestants. After weighing a handful of offers from other teams, Brown, who was a mid-season signing by the Seahawks in 2015, has opted to come back to Seattle on a four-year deal.
