    Game Notes
After starting the season with 5 home games and their bye week, the Seahawks finally see their oddball 2016 schedule send them on the road. And it's to take on the Patriots, who went O-4 during Tom Brady's suspension and who have yet to win despite his return, which has as much to do with injuries as it does anything. Mismatch or the setup for a perfect storm that will see a zero disappear for each team?

      SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY

No Brady? No Gronk? No Problem for Formerly Winless Pats

New England Snaps Its Losing Streak- And Wilson’s Collarbone

After reaching some soaring heights and following a close brush with their first defeat of the 2016 season, the Seattle Seahawks may have been overdue for being knocked off their high horse. But no one could have foreseen the unmitigated disaster that was the Hawks’ visit to New England. Despite losing Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski to second quarter injuries, the Patriots played nothing like the woebegone team that went 0-4 during Brady’s suspension and 0-2 after his return. The first throw by Jimmy Garoppolo, who during the first month of the season did nothing to solidify his place as Brady’s successor, broke a scoreless deadlock. Jimmy G went on to complete his next 16 attempts and the Pats built a nerve-shattering 24-3 halftime lead. Although the Seahawks were able to regroup enough to make a game of it at 24-17, the second quarter meltdown proved to be too much to overcome. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, a barrel of salt was rubbed into the gaping wound when Russell Wilson got “Tony Romo’d”. Wilson’s broken collarbone will cause him to miss 6-8 games, and while Josh Freeman has been sitting at no. 2 on the depth chart, he was a deer-in-the headlights 1-for-5 in relief, and in a gloomy postgame meeting with the media, Pete Carroll said he’s uncertain who he’ll start next Sunday. It looks like the coming week of practice is going to feature a mini QB battle, and given the uncertainty under center, it’s all the more important for rookie running back Fred Alden, who was shut down for the second consecutive game, to regain the form that saw him rush for over 100 yards in the first four contests of his career.

Despite New England fielding an injury-riddled defense, Seattle’s first three possessions were a three and out, a turnover on downs at the Patriot 21, and another three and out, contributing to the game remaining scoreless after the first quarter of play. As the second quarter began, the Patriots were in a 2nd and 8 at the Seahawks’ 38. A sack put them in a 3rd and 20 and sent Brady out with an abdominal tear. On the next play Garoppolo hit an uncovered Julian Edelman for a 51 yard score. After Seattle’s third three and out, Garoppolo hooked up with LeGarrette Blount for a 7 yard touchdown. It was during that series that Gronk was felled. It got no better for the Seahawks, who managed only a 21 yard Steven Hauschka field goal during the first 30 minutes of action. Following Jimmy G’s second TD to Edelman just 48 seconds before the break, the Seahawks went three and out so fast that the Pats had time to have their hurry-up offense generate three more points by way of Stephen Gostkowksi’s 48 yard boot.

In the first series of the second half, the “Legion of Gloom” finally managed to force a punt, after which the Hawks drove to Wilson’s 12 yard scoring toss to Doug Baldwin. A drop by Aaron Dobson was Garaoppolo’s first incomplete pass in 18 attempts. On the next play a hit by Jamaal Rock disrupted Garoppolo’s 19th attempt for a three and out. Next came another Seattle turnover on downs inside the New England 30 (at the 26), but on the following snap Richard Sherman picked off Jimmy G and reached the Patriot 10 on his runback. On the second play of the fourth quarter, the turnover was converted into Christine Michael’s 2 yard score, and the Hawks had made it a touchdown game at 24-17. After being blanked in the third quarter, the Pats responded to the shrinkage of their lead by marching to Blount’s 13 yard touchdown run. The Seahawks were on the verge of closing the gap again when Wilson was intercepted by Shea McClellin at the New England 8. The Pats then progressively lost yardage until Morgan Pickett brought Blount down in the end zone for a safety. With Wilson’s injury coming after the free kick, the Seahawks swiftly went three and out, and the game ended with no further points going on the board.

          PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

          The Fab 5, Week 7

          1. DALLAS COWBOYS (6-0)

          ...and then there was one.

          2. GREEN BAY PACKERS (5-1)

Win the next two, and they’ll be 7-1 when they host the Cowboys in Week 10.

          3. BALTIMORE RAVENS (5-1)

Bye week gives them extra time to prep for Monday-nighter vs. G-Men. Should be 6-1 when they go to San Diego.

          4. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (6-1)

Avenged their only loss of the season by ending Oakland’s winning streak.

          5. LOS ANGELES RAMS (6-1)

Jeff Fisher had said the new NFC West leaders were only a QB away, and John Poteat has been looking like that QB.

          Week 8 Games To Watch

          Rams (6-1) @ Eagles (5-2)

The top two picks of 2016 go head-to-head. Philly needs to right the ship after dropping its last two. Now leading the NFC West, the Rams need to press their advantage while the Russell Wilson-less Seahawks travel to Dallas for a probable defeat.

          Patriots (1-6) @ Jets (4-2)

Can the Pat get a wins streak going after mowing down the previously unbeaten Seahawks. They have to break Geno Smith’s glass slipper to do so.

          Seahawks (5-1) @ Cowboys (6-0)

This game will be a gut check for the Hawks, who are coming off their first loss of the season (and an ugly one to boot) and the loss of Russell Wilson. Meanwhile, the Cowboys will be battling to remain the league’s only unbeaten team.

          Chargers (6-1) @ Broncos (4-2)

There are the Broncos who have already scored 50 or more points three times this season. And there are the Broncos who lost to a Tennessee team that had Zach Mettenberger under center. Which team shows up will determine the outcome.

          Saints (5-2) @ Packers (5-1)

Mark Ingram is out and the New Orleans o-line is injury-riddled. This could be where the Saints’ 2016 season begins to unravel.

That loss was bound to come sooner or later. But that have Wilson go down too, that just sucks. Going to be an interesting week of practice to find his replacement.

              Game Notes
The last thing the Seahawks needed after suffering a humiliating first defeat and losing Russell Wilson to an injury the Cowboys are all too familiar with was to go on the road against the NFL's sole remaining unbeaten team. But here we have it. Despite a tepid showing in his brief relief appearance at New England, Josh Freeman will get the starting nod after an inconclusive week of practice. Freeman, however, will be on a short leash. It's hard to imagine the Hawks winning this one, but if they can at least make a good showing for themselves, there may at least some hope that the tents won't be folded up during Wilson's absence. Rookie defensive tackle ShelDon Hayes, for one, is far from pessimistic: "Russ don't play defense. We alright." As long as the Boys don't score as much as the Pats did.

Yeah we were due- we could easily have lost to the Jets and/or the Packers already. Also curious to see how the offense fares without its sparkplug.

                  Seahawks Upset Cowboys’ Applecart

The 1972 Miami Dolphins are safe once more. No NFL team will have a 19-0 season in 2016. Last week the Seattle Seahawks finally went on the road for the first time. And they lost for the first time. Badly. And they lost Russell Wilson. Virtually no one outside the Seahawk Nation saw them as the instigators of cork-popping by the surviving members of the '72 Phins, but the Hawks overcame adversity to knock off the NFL’s sole remaining unbeaten team with an uppercut to the jaw. Although Seattle trailed the Dallas Cowboys 12-10 at halftime, its defense had managed to keep Dallas out of the end zone for the first thirty minutes of play, and it did even better than that in the second half, preventing the Boys from scoring any further. In the meantime, with both Josh Freeman and Josh Johnson taking snaps under center, Seattle threw only 18 times while racking up 281 yards on the ground, with the trifecta of Fred Alden, Christine Michael and Wayman Avery pounding the rock a total of 41 times. Rookie Alden got back to eclipsing the century mark, doing so for the fifth time in seven games with 110 yards and a TD on 17 carries, and 2 more yards from Michael would have given the Hawks a pair of 100-yard rushers for the second time this season. With Tony Romo completing 32 of 45 attempts for 411 yards, it was remarkable that the Cowboys could manage only a quartet of first half field goals, but the Seahawks were practicing the bend but don’t break philosophy, allowing Dallas into the red zone only twice. The result was a 31-12 riding of the Cowgirls. The win was the clearing of a big hurdle for the Seahawks, who now know they won’t drop an 0-for scat during Wilson’s recovery, and whatever confidence was lost a week ago has surely been regained.

The Cowboys were in a 1st and 15 before the game’s first snap thanks to a false start by Zack Martin, but Romo went 6-for-7 in the opening series, guiding Dallas to the red zone. But Romo’s first incomplete pass was a third down catch by Cason Belton with one foot beyond the end line, and the Boys had to settle for striking first via Dan Bailey’s leg. The Seahawks answered with a field goal of their own, but in that drive Freeman was only 1-for-1 for a yard and took two sacks. In the second Dallas drive, rookie defensive tackle ShelDon Hayes, who has been very vocal about the defense carrying the team during Wilson’s absence, recorded a sack to put Dallas in a 3rd and 18. Romo, however, was able to convert the situation with a completion to Dez Bryant. But on the next play, a blitzing Tharold Simon brought Romo down and this time the sticks did not move again. A false start turned the 4th and 12 at the 30 into a 4th and 17 at the 35, but Bailey drilled a 52-yarder to put the Cowboys back in front. The next series ended with Seattle’s first touchdown, a 4 yard pass from Freeman to Doug Baldwin with 5:11 left in the half. Dallas then reached a first and goal at the 4, but Seattle’s defense turned in a goal line stand that forced Bailey’s third three-pointer. The Seahawks followed with a three and out, after which Bailey’s 37 yard kick gave the Cowboys a 12-10 halftime lead with one tick to spare.

Thinking Freeman had been too hesitant, Pete Carroll allowed Johnson to start the second half. With Johnson at the controls, Seattle took the second half kickoff and marched to Alden’s 2 yard TD run. But the only pass in the 11-play, 80-yard drive was Johnson’s 2 yard completion to Jimmy Graham. Next time out, after a holding call assessed against Drew Nowak, the Seahawks found themselves in a 1st and 18 at the Dallas 35. Three plays later is was 4th and inches at the 17, but Johnson was stuffed attempting to convert with a sneak. Following a Dallas punt to begin the 4th quarter, rookie guard Manu Holmes was flagged for holding, resulting in a 2nd and 18 at the 10, but a Johnson completion to Graham plus a roughing the passer call on Demarcus Lawrence gave the Hawks a first down at their 32. Alden reached his 100 yard milestone on the next play, then Michael bolted for 37 yards to the Dallas 23. A facemask penalty committed against Michael by linebacker Whit Hobbs gave Seattle a first and goal at the 2, and after Alden lost a yard on a stretch play, Michael scored to double-up the Cowboys at 24-12 with 8:10 to play. After an exchange of punts, Seattle’s coming at the two minute warning, Dallas was threatening, but a sack-fumble combo by Michael Bennett sent the ball bouncing the other way, and it was scooped up by Jamaal Rock, who took it 64 yards to the house for the game’s final tally.

                      PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

                      The Fab 5, Week 8

                      1. GREEN BAY PACKERS (6-1)

Now that no one is unbeaten, the Pack has risen to the top.

                      2. DENVER BRONCOS (5-2)

                      Avenged loss to Bolts.

                      3. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (6-2)

A close loss to Denver, but still leading the AFC West.

                      4. HOUSTON TEXANS (7-1)

Would be higher if their loss had inexplicably been to the Bears.

                      5. NEW YORK JETS (5-2)

Winners of 4 straight since Week 2‘s narrow defeat in Seattle

                      Week 9 Games To Watch

                      Steelers (1-6) @ Browns (2-5)

Now that they’re off the schnide, the Stillers have a chance to start a winning streak by defeating former HC Mike Tomlin.

                      Cowboys (6-1) @ Vikings (3-4)

The Boys need to bounce back from an upset loss to the Wilson-less Seahawks, while the Vikes desperately need this one to keep their season from slipping away.

                      Broncos (5-2) @ Chiefs (4-3)

Streaking Chiefs have a chance to make the AFC West a three-team race.

                      Bengals (4-3) @ Giants (3-4)

The G-Men were 0-3 after getting swept by the Cowboys; they’ve gone 3-1 since and need this one to reach .500 for the first time this season.

                      Ravens (5-2) @ Chargers (6-2)

Each team is coming off its second loss of the leason and is in need of avoiding its first set of back-to-back defeats.

                      Lions (3-4) @ Packers (6-1)

Leos can make themselves a .500 team with an upset.

                      Jets (5-2) @ Rams (6-2)

The Rams have just lost their NFC West lead and need to end Gang Green’s streak to keep up with a resilient Seattle team.

                      Steelers Win! Steelers Win!

The Pittsburgh Steelers have given up their assault on the NFL’s record for most consecutive regular season losses, leaving it securely in the hands of the team with the league’s lowest all-time winning percentage, the Tam Bay Buccaneers.

                      Hawks Extend Hill

Seattle defensive tackle Jordan Hill has signed a 5 year extension worth $11.7 million.

The 2016 Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a case of "be careful for what you wish for". After showing improvement (but apparently not enough) in Lovie Smith's final season at the helm, the Bucs have taken several steps backwards under first-time NFL head coach Dirk Koetter. The team is relatively healthy and has no excuses for not playing better. After beating the Cowboys despite the absence of Russell Wilson, the Seahawks should be poised to brush aside the Buccaneers en route to a key first meeting with Arizona. After changing horses at halftime last week, Pete Carroll has named Josh Johnson as this week's starter under center.

                          Hawks Walk The Plank

Two weeks into Russell Wilson’s recovery from the broken collarbone he suffered in New England, Seattle Seahawks fans are wondering which team they’re going to see more of during his absence. The one that spanked then-unbeaten Dallas a week ago, or the one that tanked against a one-win Tampa Bay Buccaneers squad? Just as Seattle’s defenders were the heroes in last week’s victory, keeping the Cowboys out of the end zone for the duration, they were the culprits in an ignominious 31-21 defeat by the Bucs. With both of the Joshes playing again, the search for stability under center may be a partial factor, but it wasn’t the Joshes who gave up big plays and who made Tampa QB Donfred “Crab Legs” Curry look like Peyton Manning in his prime. Curry completed his first 24 pass attempts on his way to a stat line of 27-of-31 for 339 yards and 4 touchdowns. Surprisingly, none of those first 24 catches were made by Mike Evans, who finished the day with just one grab for a 10 yard score that put the Hawks down 31-14 going into the 4th quarter. With first half deficits of 10-0 and 17-7, Seattle’s running game was unable to make its customary contribution. Wayman Avery carried only 5 times for 57 yards that included a 47 yard TD, and Fred Alden was limited to 10 carries for only 34 yards.

In the first two series of the game, Curry directed the Bucs to his 7 yard TD toss to Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, while the Seahawks converted a 4th and 1 at the Tampa Bay 41 but were forced to punt when a holding call against rookie left tackle Nino Beasley negated the play. The lost opportunity was followed by Tampa driving to a 40 yard field goal by third round pick Zach Tarpley. Along the way, Bobby Wagner exited the game with a quad strain sustained on the first play of the second quarter, and he did not return. After the Bucs were spotted that 10-zip lead, the Hawks got on the board with Avery’s long run, but in the next possession Russell Shepard was allowed to get way too open and he hauled in a 37 yard strike from Curry that had the Seahawks down 10 points once more. Seattle answered with Josh Johnson’s 4 yard TD pass to Derrick Coleman on the first play after the two minute warning. With the deficit trimmed to a mere three points at the intermission, things were not yet all doom and gloom, but the game would be lost in the third quarter.

The second half began with each team going three and out, then a screen pass from Curry to Doug Martin resulted in a 48 yard touchdown when linebacker Morgan Pickett got taken out of the play. As related earlier, Evans' 10 yard catch at the end of the quarter had the Hawks down 31-14 going into the final frame. Seattle’s defense was finally able to stifle the Tampa Bay offense, but the damage was too severe to remedy in only 15 minutes. With Josh Freeman relieving Johnson, the Seahawks reached a 4th and 1 at the Tampa 1. They went for it, and Avery lost 3 yards. After a Tampa punt, Freeman was picked off by Johnthan Banks, who returned the ball to the Seattle 45, but the Bucs then went three and out, happy to just run the ball to shrink the time remaining. Things looked dire with Bryan Anger’s punt going out of bounds at the 11, but Freeman orchestrated a drive that was capped by his 9 yard scoring pass to Jimmy Graham. But with the Seahawks having had to traverse 79 yards to score, the clock was now down to 4:02 and the deficit was still double digits. Despite another three and out by the Bucs, time ran out with Seattle at the Buccaneer 7, with the Seahawks having earlier sacrificed a time out to a failed challenge of a catch or drop call. There will be no time to mope over this loss- dented pride will have to be swallowed in preparation for a road trip to Arizona.

Injury report: Wagner is expected to be 100%, or nearly so, for Tuesday’s practice but Fenton Ellis sustained a broken arm on a kickoff return and tight end Luke Willson went down with a RomoBone.

                          Highlight Reel:

Note on the highlights: There is only one 4th quarter clip because the game locked up on me. I was able to close Madden and resume the game (and take my lumps) but it had the team in its regular unis instead of the throwbacks.

                              PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

                              The Fab 5, Week 9

                              1. GREEN BAY PACKERS (7-1)

What Steven Tyler said. (Train kept a-rollin’)

                              2. HOUSTON TEXANS (7-1)

Despite not playing this week, the Texans edged closer to the AFC’s home field, thanks to losses by Denver and San Diego.

                              3. NEW YORK JETS (6-2)

Geno haters are stewing as the Jets win their 5th straight and Smith is named the AFC’s Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive time.

                              4. BALTIMORE RAVENS (6-2)

Solid road win at San Diego was a great follow-up to a loss to the streaking G-Men.

                              5. BUFFALO BILLS (6-2)

Their 2 losses are to teams with a combined record of 11-5- which is good enough to win most divisions.

                              Week 10 Games To Watch

                              Broncos (5-3) @ Texans (7-1)

Letting Brock Osweiler walk may have been the best thing the Broncos did in the offseason, but some still want to see this as a grudge match. Von Miller certainly fanned the flames with his “Brockback Mountain” tweet. Houston has had two weeks to prepare for a game which up-and down Denver desperately needs to win.

                              Eagles (6-2) @ Giants (4-4)

After a 5-0 start, the Eagles have lost 2 out of 3, while the G-Men were once 0-3. Are these two teams going in opposite directions? Philly needs to ensure that it still has at least as many wins as Dallas, while the sweep by the Cowboys means the Giants can ill afford any more divisional losses.

                              Jets (6-2) @ Ravens (6-2)

The Jets, having vindicated their decision to give Ryan Fitzpatrick the finger, have a 5-game winning streak on the line. Baltimore holds a 2 game lead in the AFC North and doesn’t want to see that shrink.

                              Cowboys (6-2) @ Packers (7-1)

A lot of people wanted to see the Boys go into this one at 8-0, for various reasons, but they got knocked sideways by Seattle two weeks ago and after another loss they need to prove they’re not tipping into a nosedive. And until they lose again, the Packers’ drone of “a drive away from unbeaten” will continue.

                              Steelers (2-6) @ Bills (6-2)

Can Pittsburgh follow 22 straight losses with 3 straight wins? Stranger things have happened, but the Bills probably have this one.

                              Seahawks (6-2) @ Cardinals (5-3)

The Cards have been seeing Russell Wilson’s injury as an opportunity to overtake Seattle in the NFC West, but last week they forgot to not get beat by the struggling Panthers. Now the best they can do with a win is draw even.

                              Chiefs (5-3) @ Raiders (4-4)

In winning their last three, the Chiefs have crashed into the AFC West race. But the Raiders are lurking only a game behind them and are looking to turn things into a free-for-all.

                              Stillers Win Streak!

Is a corner finally being turned Hue Jackson’s freshman season? After getting off the schnide a week ago, the Steelers have “improved” to 2-6 with a victory over division rival Cleveland and the coach that led them astray to 0-16 in 2015. Meanwhile, Mike Tomlin is now 2-22 in his last two dozen games.

McCoy Benches Rivers, Foles To Start vs. Broncos in Week 11

At 6-3, the San Diego Chargers are the current leaders of the AFC West, but they don’t have Philip Rivers to thank for that. Rivers leads the league in interceptions thrown (21, 5 more than no. 2 Brock Osweiler), and among QB’s with qualifying attempts, his QB rating of 68.9 is higher only than those of RGIII (65.6) and Jimmy Garoppolo (66.2). Accordingly, head coach Mike McCoy has decided to use the Bolts’ bye week as extra prep time for changing horses to Nick Foles. Foles’ dismal turn with the Rams in 2015 was only 0.1 rating point better than Rivers’ current mark, but McCoy has had nothing but praise for Foles during his time in San Diego. Rivers has refused to comment on the situation.

With Russell Wilson out, the Seahawks have been Forrest Gump's box of chocolates. But the 5-3 Cardinals have also been riding a roller coaster and have a losing home record that includes an opening day defeat by the Lions. And with two of Arizona's starting o-linemen out of the lineup, the Seattle defense may have a chance at redemption after shaming itself by allowing Donfred Curry's NFC Offensive Player of the Week performance. The biggest winner here could be the Rams, who will see a division rival lose either way.
