T-Jax Pick Leads To Walk-Off Loss

Can Mike Scifres throw? Hekker no. But that didn’t prevent the San Diego Chargers from knocking off the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2 exhibition play. Philip Rivers directed the Bolts to one of the game’s two touchdowns in the opening series, but things went downhill for him from there, including an end zone pick by Earl Thomas that ended San Diego’s second possession. After Rivers’ allocated time was done, backup Kellen Clemens lasted only 3 pass attempts before suffering a broken collarbone on a sack by Cassius Marsh. Unwilling to put Rivers at risk, Chargers head coach Mike McCoy turned to punter Mike Scifres as his emergency QB. From there on the Bolts had a hand tied behind their back, and but for a costly Seattle turnover, they likely would not have scored at all in the second half. But reeking QB play by the Seahawks kept San Diego in the game. Russelmania started slow and did not get going before time ran out on him. Playing all of the second half except for Seattle’s final series, B.J. Daniels threw a pair of picks, the second in the 'Hawks’ penultimate possession. Relieving Daniels, Tarvaris Jackson (who at one point in the second quarter was 0-for-7), misfired an interception that immediately put the Bolts in field goal range with less than 2 minutes to go, and the game ended with Nick Novak’s walk-off field goal giving the Chargers a 13-10 victory.

End zone pick of Philip Rivers by Earl Thomas.

After one good series, life got rough for Rivers.

Two games, two picks for Marcus Burley.

Took one for the team: Luke Willson injured his shoulder scoring Seattle’s lone TD.

DeMarcus Dobbs gets past D.J. Fluker on the way to his second sack.

When I saw SD had only 2 QB's I should have moved Lindley from AZ to them. Oh well. Made for a funny storyline. An thanks. I try to dress them up a bit.

Game 1 no because of the loading issue. Game 2 and beyond, yes. For starters, anyway. I thought I'd see how they made the transition and then change anything that was out of whack if it wasn't much, or try a current gen set if they make things fubar. 1 as HUM QBA be turn out to be too harsh but I don't judge anything by one game, especially a preseason one.

                  Cut-Down to 65

                  FB Will Tukuafu - even with a run-heavy offense, a team doesn't need 2 FB's in today's NFL.

WR Bryan Walters - roster was overloaded with WR's and this one was the most expendable.

TE Rashaun Allen - another overloaded position.

DT Travian Robertson - gonna sound like a broken record here.

FS Steven Terrell - there was no need for the team to be 3-deep at FS, and at 6-2/220, Deshawn Shead is a guy who can also go into the box in run support as a SS.

                    Seahawks Sign Mike Thomas

The Texans decided Mike Thomas didn't fit their plans.
                    Now he's the newest Seahawk.

Since trading Percy Harvin away to the Jets at the beginning of camp, the Seattle Seahawks have been searching for a kick retrurner. That search may now be over after the acquisition of Mike Thomas, who was included in the Houston Texans' cut-down to a 65-man roster. Thomas has a career punt return average of 8.2 yards with a 78 yard touchdown and a career average of 23.8 on kickoff returns (O TD's). As a receiver his best year was with the 2010 Jaguars, when he grabbed 66 balls for 820 yards (12.4 avg.) and 4 tubs. Although it was long snapper Clint Gresham who was released to make room for Thomas, Taylor Price's roster spot may now be in jeopardy as well.

In other team news, the Seahawks have learned that tight end Luke Willson, who was injured scoring Seattle's only touchdown in this week's loss to the Chargers, has a slight tear of the left shoulder labrum, putting him on the shelf for the remainder of exhibition play and possibly sidelining him for opening day as well.

                      Dress Rehearsal Goes Well Enough...

                      ...Fourth Quarter, Not So Much

The “dress rehearsal” phase of the Seattle Seahawks’ third preseason game of 2014 was a “win”, with the ‘Hawks up 21-13 on the Chicago Bears after three quarters, but after the 1‘s were done, the subs and roster-seekers got out-scored 11-0 in the 4th, resulting in a 24-21 loss. Head coach Pete Carroll called Seattle’s wide receiver play “unacceptable”, but Russell Wilson still managed to complete 70.8% of his passes, Marshawn Lynch averaged 5.1 yards per carry, and the Boomers came a bad final minute of the first half away from allowing only 3 points. Carroll’s displeasure was primarily with no. 1 and 2 wideouts Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse, who were noticeably ineffective with a grand total of 4 catches for 25 yards in their three quarters of work.

Like the last time out, interceptions played a key factor in the defeat. After the Bears got on the board with only 28 seconds remaining in the half, the Seahawks tried to make something happen before the break. Something did, but not in the way they had hoped, with a Wilson pick being converted into a Chicago field goal. In the 4th quarter, Tarvaris Jackson was intercepted in the red zone on a drive that the Seahawks had started at their 4, digging out with a 39 yard reception by rookie Paul Richardson, and B.J. Daniels’ pick was converted into Robbie Gould’s game-winning kick.

Jeremy Lane’s nickel blitz sack kept the Bears from converting a Mike Thomas muff.

QB Daniels Included In Latest Cut-Down

Second-year quarterback B.J. Daniels was the most notable player included in this week's cut-down to 59 players, or 58 actually. Daniels, who was hitting opposing defenders as much as Seattle receivers during this preseason, was probably headed for the practice squad at best, even had he performed better. Now he's free to pursue other opportunities, and he might want to look at some that don't involve playing in the NFL.

                        Also released:

WR Taylor Price: As expected, the recent acquisition of Mike Thomas spelled the and of Price's time with Seattle.

TE Anthony McCoy: Pete Carroll likes to give his former USC players chances, but McCoy didn't do enough with his. He's why Luke Willson and Cooper Helfet were added to the roster.

C Patrick Lewis: Lost his battle, such as it was, with backup center Lemuel Jeanpierre, even though Jeanpierre is in a contract year and may not be a Seahawk in 2015. A potential practice-squadder.

LE Gary Scruggs: Other backups DeMarcus Dobbs and Cassius Marsh have already recorded sacks during exhibition play. Scruggs has not, which made it an easy decision when it was time to thin the position.

DT Jimmy Staten: Who? There you go.

CB Eric Pinkins: Never had a chance after Marcus Burley had a pick in each of the first two preseason games.

That's a total of 7 players released, when only 6 needed to be cut. That was to open a roster spot for:

What? That's right, the Seahawks have signed Josh Freeman to a one year contract. It's hard to remember that in 2010 Freeman threw for 3,451 yards with 28 TD's and only 6 picks, for a rating of 95.8, and was a Pro Bowl alternate. But Tampa Bay's hiring of Greg Schiano was the beginning of the end for Freeman. Schiano first demoted Freeman in favor of his own draft pick Mike Glennon, then kicked Freeman to the curb. Then came that one disastrous start with the Vikings, followed by another demotion, due in part to concussion-like symptoms, and a cup of coffee with the Giants back in May. Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who was certainly correct in his assessment of Russell Wilson, believes Freeman is salvageable, at least as a backup, "if he brings the right mindset to the task". No bated breath here.

On an amusing side note, Freeman is 7" taller than Wilson.

So one QB who opened camp with the 'Hawks is now gone. Is T-Jax is peril as well? Booting him would cost the team $600K against next year's cap, but his preseason play has been only somewhat less abysmal than Daniels'. The scouting staff is evaluating potential victims of other teams' final cut-down and watching film of free agents, so that's not a good sign for Tarvaris. Holding on to his roster spot could hinge on his performance in the preseason finale.

                          Lazarus, Come Forth!

Freeman Fires 3 TD's As ‘Hawks Rout Raiders

5 days ago former first round Josh Freeman was a free agent with no apparent future in the NFL, a la JaMarucs Russell, Joey Harrington, Matt Leinart, Vince Young and Brady Quinn. Now he’s going to be Russell Wilson’s backup. Freeman’s resurrection came with the best performance a Seattle Seahawks QB has had this preseason. Completing 17 of 28 passes for 209 yards, Freeman threw 3 touchdown passes while being intercepted once. That interception did lead to the only touchdown of the game for former AFC West rival Oakland, but Freeman’s effort was a far cry from the last time he was on the field, when he went 20/53 for 190 yards and a pick in his lone appearance for the Minnesota Vikings, and a lack of prep time was the only thing in common with that game and the Seahawks’ exhibition finale. Before anyone gushes too much, keep this caveat in mind:
IT WAS ONLY PRESEASON. AGAINST THE RAIDERS.That said, what Freeman did with a limited knowledge of the offense compared to the jobs done by Tarvaris Jackson and B.J. Daniels may bode well. Freeman played one series more than he was scheduled to, convincing head coach Pete Carroll to allow him another possession after his pick was converted into points. That drive was capped by Freeman’s 13 yard scoring pass to Doug Baldwin, which gave the Seahawks a 32-13 lead. After his delayed entry into the game, T-Jax has apparently failed in his bid to hold on to a roster spot. Although he did direct a field goal drive for the game’s final points, he was also intercepted-giving him at least one pick in each preseason game- and only a turnover on downs inside the 10 prevented a conversion. After the game, Carroll said, “Josh was poised and but for that pick, he was making good reads. Considering how little time we’ve had to work with him, I’m really pleased. As of right now he’s number two on the depth chart.” It’s anticipated that Jackson’s second stint with Seattle will end when the team’s cut-down to 53 is revealed. The opening day roster may not be final until after the 'Hawks see who final cuts make available, but whether the team chooses to carry 2 or 3 QB’s remains to be seen and will depend on whether there’s a player the team is willing to sacrifice to make room for a third signal-caller. There’s rumored to be a bit of interest in rookies Connor Shaw (Browns) and Brynn Renner (Broncos) if one or the other is cut, but the Seahwks could join the growing ranks of teams having just two active QB’s.

And oh, by the way, Robert “Beast Mode Jr.” Turbin also had a great game, pounding out an even 100 yards on just 15 carries, for an average of 6.6 yards per tote.

Now let’s bring on some real football. Packers in one week.

                            Cut-Down to 53

QB Tarvaris Jackson: Performance trumps playbook knowledge as Josh Freeman shoves T-Jax out the door.

LG C.J. Davis: A ho-hum camp, and with backup center Lemuel Jeanpierre having the flexibility to play anywhere in the interior line, the 'Hawks go forward with three guards on the roster.

DT's Kevin Williams and Jesse Williams: Jesse wasn't going to make the 5-deep, and to get to 53 the Seahawks decided to be only 4-deep at DT. The younger D'Anthony Smith was favored over the 34-year-old Kevin Williams.

MLB's Allen Bradford and Brock Coyle: A 7-tackle game against the Raiders didn't save Coyle as the team goes from 4 MLB's to 2. Both are potential practice squad players.

Reynolds Signing Finalizes Opening Day Roster

Ed Reynolds was on Philly's practice squad for about half
a day before becoming a Seahawk.

The Seahawks have made but one roster move since the conclusion of preseason and the cut-down to 53 players, signing former Stanford safety Ed Reynolds. Reynolds was this year's 5th round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles, but was released when Philly pared its roster to 53 players. The following morning Reynolds signed a practice squad contract with the Eagles, but in the afternoon he was snapped up by the Seahawks, who had been watching Philly's cuts for him. To make room for Reynolds, the Seahawks released safety Deshawn Shead. In 2012 Reynolds was a third-team All-American and the winner of the Jack Tatum Trophy, and in 2013 he was a First-Team All-American. In the 2012 season, his six picks were the most by a Stanford player since 1973, and a school-record 3 of them were pick-sixes, and his 301 interception return yards were the second-most in NCAA history. Interceptions fell to 1 in 2013, but he recorded 87 tackles in 13 starts, good for third on the team. He's still rough around the edges and needs some coaching up, which is why he wasn't picked until the fifth round and why he didn't make the Eagles' 53-man roster, but he has the potential to become a solid backup and special teams player.

Seattle GM Johns Schneider said he does not anticipate any further roster moves before the 'Hawks begin the 2014 season by hosting the Green Bay Packers, meaning there will not be a 3rd quarterback on the roster, ending speculation on that front.

Ed Reynolds obviously cannot wear his college number in Seattle. The Eagles had assigned him #30, and he'll be wearing that for the Seahawks.
