Conference realignment cheat sheet 2014: Where college football teams are now
By Pete Volk on Feb 13, 2014, 9:01a

Most of the ramifications of the last flurry of conference realignment will finally finish in 2014. What do the new conferences look like?

Most of the ramifications of the last flurry of conference realignment will finally finish in 2014. What do the new conferences look like?

For each conference whose roster is changing, we'll also figure out winners and losers. That only refers to this year, not the entire wave of realignment kicked off either five (by the Big Ten), 10 (by the ACC), or 23 (by the SEC) years ago, depending on how you look at it.

    American
In: East Carolina, Tulane, Tulsa (plus Navy in 2015)
    Out: Louisville, Rutgers

The teams: Cincinnati, Connecticut, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa, UCF, USF, Navy (2015)

    Winner or loser?
Definite loser. The AAC lost by far its biggest program in Louisville, plus one of its few legitimate second-tier teams in Rutgers. Now, the old Big East is almost an exact replica of the old Conference-USA, with its hopes of national respect as a power conference completely dashed.

Still, it might have the best shot at New Year's success of any of the non-power leagues, especially if Tulsa rebounds from a down year and Tulane continues its improvement. ECU is considered a solid program.

    ACC
    In: Louisville
    Out: Maryland

The teams: Atlantic: Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, NC State, Syracuse, Wake Forest
Coastal: Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Virginia Tech

    Winner or loser?
Winner. While the long-term effects of bringing Bobby Petrino back are unknown, Louisville's program is certainly at a much better place than Maryland's right now. The Terrapins pulled in a better recruiting class than the Cardinals after the Petrino fallout, but there's a lot of ground to make up there.

    Big Ten

    In: Maryland, Rutgers
    Out: None

The teams: East: Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers
West: Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue, Wisconsin

    Winner or loser?
Definite winner. The Big Ten is the only conference that added teams for 2014 without also losing any, and while Maryland and Rutgers are not expected to come in and immediately compete for the Big Ten title, they expand the footprint of the conference and the TV network that goes along with it.

Another win: the Big Ten realigned its divisions geographically, scrapping the confusing Leaders-and-Legends format.

    Big 12
    No Changes

    Conference USA
    In: Old Dominion, Western Kentucky
    Out: East Carolina, Tulane, Tulsa

The teams: East: FIU, Florida Atlantic, Marshall, MTSU, Old Dominion, UAB, Western Kentucky
West: Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Rice, Southern Miss, UTEP, UTSA

    Winner or loser?
Loser. Tulsa is down and Tulane is up, but East Carolina has been one of the most consistent non-power programs in the country since Ruffin McNeill took over. Western Kentucky is undergoing its second straight coaching change, while Old Dominion is completing its transition to the FBS level, so while the replacements brought in might have promise in the future, none are home-runs.

    MAC
    No Changes

    Mountain West
    No Changes

    Pac-12
    No Changes

    SEC
    No Changes

    Sun Belt

In: Georgia State (officially, after transition year) Idaho, New Mexico State
    Out: Western Kentucky

The teams: Arkansas State, Georgia State, Idaho, UL-Lafayette, UL-Monroe, New Mexico State, South Alabama, Texas State, Troy

    Winner or loser?
Winner. Sure, the loss of Western Kentucky will hurt (especially at the top), but the Sun Belt had a serious numbers issue and was able to add quantity -- which is exactly what it needed. None of the programs added are particularly big gets.

The recruiting class looks like there should be some immediate contributors. I'm looking forward to seeing you get the ground game going a little more with Reggie Beck coming in as a running back.

I know Chalich transferred in real life, cool you decided to do that although it looked like he was your entire offense for portions of last season. It opens the door for Eddie Bates to come in and start right away though.

That schedule looks tough with six road games to start the year, but then again, the Kibbie Dome isn't much of a home-field advantage anyways.

got pretty excited when Bates signed on so I figured I'd follow the real life storyline with Chalich. Wouldn't have been very realistic to bench him after last season

the recruiting class will be asked to contribute early and often, i'm putting together he depth chart right now

little rough with all the road games but hopefully balances out

            thanks for posting man

Vandals Roster Analysis and Projected Starters
              by Zach Woosley August 17, 2014, 9:14am

The Vandals are coming off a better than expected 4-8 campaign and have had a great recruiting class. Let’s see how things look for them this season. Coach Wilkerson has released the initil depth chart so we’ll have that listed by position.

DEZMON EPPS HOPES TO BACK UP A SOLID 2013 SEASON
              Offense

              Quarterback
              Eddie Bates
              Matt Linehan
              Joshua McCain

True freshman Bates will get the start at quarterback. He dazzled with his speed and running ability while also possessing the strongest arm of the group. Bates is slightly less accurate than Linehan and McCain but his playmaking ability vastly overshadows that.

              Runningback
              Kristoffer Olugbode
              Reggie Beck
              Jerrel Brown
              Richard Montgomery
              Isaiah Saunders
              Jake Manley (FB)

Wilkerson has Olugbode and Beck listed as co-starters. Expect to see Olugbode get the bulk of the carries with Beck and Brown a close second and third. Idaho should use more multiple back sets this year as they transition to a run-first team. Beck’s explosiveness could make him the go to guy by midseason if Olugbode’s numbers don’t improve from last year. Manley will be the main blocking back but may see a lesser role due to the use of two tailbacks at times.

              Wide Receivers
              Dezmon Epps
              Deon Watson
              Marquan Major
              Jacob Sannon
              Trent Cowan
              Chris Featherstone

Epps is the only receiver listed as a starter and that leads us to believe some three back sets might make an appearance throughout the season. Epps is far and away the best option here, he is the fastest and has the best hands. All he lacks is height. Watson and Major both have height but are less talented. Sannon, Cowan and Featherstone provide decent depth but won’t scare opponents.

              Tight Ends
              Ronnie Rawls
              Eric Lemke
              John Wade

Rawls comes in as a true freshman and wasted no time taking the starting tight end spot. He has better size, speed, strength and hands than the other two. Not quite the route runner that Lemke is but that should come with time.

              Offensive Line
              LT: Dallas Sandberg, Ben Westrum
              LG: Ben Williams, Brett Thompson
              C: Mike Marboe, Brett Thompson
              RG: Cody Elenz, Jesse Davis
              RT: Spencer Beale, Darren Harper

After some shuffling around of players Wilkerson found a unit he’s very pleased with. Sandberg and Marboe will be the anchors with Williams providing a great push in the running game. This unit should be more than adequate against most of the opponents the Vandals will see this season.

SENIOR CB DELANCY PARHAM WILL BE A KEY PLAYER
              Defense

              Defensive Ends
LE: Anthony Rice, Marius Burgsmueller, Quinton Bradley
RE: Roy Johnson, Marius Burgsmueller, Quinton Bradley

After landing Roy Johnson in a great recruiting class, Wilkerson and the rest of the coaching staff felt that they could move Maxx Forde inside and throw Johnson into the fire right from the start. Johnson earned the nickname “Little J.J” during the preseason and was assigned the number 99. High praise. Rice is the most polished of the group and Burgsmueller and Bradley give the position great depth.

              Defensive Tackles
              Max Forde
              Ryan Edwards
              Tueni Leupamanu
              Tommy Johnson
              Matthew Neal

Maxx Forde was asked early in the offseason to move inside. He responded by adding nearly 20 pounds to his frame while not sacrificing any of his mobility. Forde’s presence will be missed on the outside but the coaching staff felt it was best to shore things up in the middle. Forde and Edwards should help the linebackers immensely by occupying blockers and leaving them free to run. Luepamanu and Johnson are both over 300 pounds and could see significant playing time in key run situations. Expect Forde to appear on the outside from time to time as well.

              Outside Linebackers
              Eric Tuipulotu
              Marc Millan
              James Randall
              Tony Lashley
              Tomothy Simpson
              Jordan Edginton

Tuipulotu and Millan are listed as the starters but expect to see plenty of James Randall as well. While all of the group can move well Millan is the fastest. Expect the coaching staff to get creative with alignments and packages with this group. Lashley will likely be used sparingly while Simpson and Edginton are likely special-teamers.

              Middle Milebackers
              Juan Martinez
              Broc Westlake
              Corey Evans

Martinez hopes to improve on his 54 tackles from last season and should certainly do that with the improvements in front of him at tackle. While he doesn’t have blazing speed he does get from sideline to sideline efficiently and does well chasing down plays from behind. Westlake and Evans are good depth and should benefit from watching Martinez execute.

              Cornerbacks
              Solomon Dixon
              Delancy Parham
              Jayshawn Jordan
              Andrew Hawkins
              Desmond Banks

Dixon and Parham combined for five interceptions last season and should be able to improve on those numbers this year. Both are a little undersized but make up for it with technique. Both are decent enough tacklers. Both excel in man coverage and should be asked to do so frequently. Third corner Jayshawn Jordan can play inside or out and is solid in man coverage as well. Dixon and Jordan can both press receivers when needed but Parham should not be asked to. Hawkins in also good in man coverage but needs time to develop. Banks moves over from safety and may be used in goalline situations on tall receivers.

              Safeties
              Bradley Njoku
              Chris Campbell
              Tom Hennessey
              Jordan Grabski
              Russell Siavii

Campbell and Njoku could be the best safety tandem in the Sun Belt Conference. Njoku recorded 45 tackles last season while playing more of a box safety role, he will be asked to play more zone coverage this season, which he has shown he can do well. Campbell had a great preseason and has shown the ability to play man or zone coverage as well as moving into the box and punishing runningbacks. Tom Hennessey is a good tackler who is better used in almost a linebacker role. Siavii is essentially a less talented version of Hennessey. Desmond Banks could be asked to fill in here if needed.

              Specialists

              P/K: Austin Rehkow, Adam Alvarez
              KR/PR: Richard Montgomery, Jacob Sannon

The strong legged Rehkow will be tasked with all punting and place kicking duties this season, as he was the second half of last season. Rehkow has improved his accuracy and should be a more reliable option with a year under his belt.

Delancy Parham is more vital to the defense this season and Dezmon Epps is far too important to the offense so we get new faces returning punts and kicks. Montgomery showed a natural ability in spring football and looks to be the primary for both punts and kicks while Sannon’s ability to see the field and hit even the smallest opening will have him waiting in the wings if Montgomery falters.

Idaho looks to be overmatched in a season opening battle at Washington State.

                    WASHINGTON STATE QUARTERBACK CONNOR HALLIDAY

Connor Halliday should be able to pick apart Idaho’s overmatched secondary in this one so expect a big outing from him. He’ll look for his talented receivers Dominique Williams, Brett Bartolone, Vince Mayle and Gabe Marks to win their battles. Defensively the team is led by linesmen Kalafitoni Pole and Xavier Cooper as well as middle linebacker Darryl Monroe.

                      OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT

                      Pullman, Washington –
Maxx Forde sacked Connor Halliday early in the game for a safety. The play came after a fumble by freshman quarterback Eddie Bates in the redzone. Forde’s big play served to energize the entire Idaho team after they had just had the wind knocked out of their sails minutes earlier.

Maxx Forde’s early sack for a safety set the tone

“We’re hoping to see a number of big plays from Maxx this year.” Coach Wilkerson said after giving Forde credit for the momentum shift.

Freshmen Eddie Bates and Reggie Beck, who Wilkerson had high praise for, contributed over 400 yards of offense and scored four touchdowns between them in their debut. Bates ran and passed for nearly 300 yards on his own, scoring on the ground three times. Bates was efficient throwing the ball as he completed 16 of his 21 attempts for 176 yards and no interceptions. He did fumble inside the Cougars ten yard line on the Vandals first possession.

“It was a read option and I pulled it back just a second too late and Reggie (Beck) bumped it.” Bates explained when asked about the play. “That one’s on me.”

Idaho got much deeper into the playbook than we ever saw last season, employing a mix of different formations and personnel groupings. Wilkerson even showed an alignment with Beck at quarterback and Bates at runningback. Washington State stacked the line of scrimmage on the first play from the formation, expecting a Beck run. Beck threw a quick pass to tight end Ronnie Rawls who picked up 16 yards on the play. Idaho used six different runningbacks in the game.

The defense was stuck primarily in a 3-3-5 or dime look as they defended Washington State’s pass heavy offense.

Idaho out gained Washington State 513 yards to 270, including a 321 to -3 advantage on the ground. The Vandals possessed the ball for over three quarters of the game, using their clock chewing running attack to keep the pass heavy Cougars offense and Halliday on the sidelines.

Washington State’s Connor Halliday struggled mightily in the first half before tossing three touchdown passes in the second half.

Idaho will face Arkansas State on the road next week in their first Sun Belt Conference action. Arkansas State has yet to play a game this season.

Idaho looks to trample Arkansas State after taking down a much better Washington State team in a surprising upset. Arkansas State will be playing their first game of the season. Arkansas State topped Idaho last season in a close game.

Arkansas State should lean on the running abilities of quarterback Fredi Knighten and tailback Frankie Jackson. J.D. McKissic is the team’s top receiver. Defensively their best player is safety Sterling Young, who picked off a pass in the endzone late in the game last season. Outside linebacker Qushaun Lee is also a player to watch out for.

Hell of a way to open the season, with a big upset. Talk about momentum!

Great opportunity here for the Vandals to go up 2-0 to start the season.

Really love those Idaho uniforms. Quietly one of the classiest in college football.
