    DOWN TO THE WIRE

“We hardly though twice.” Idaho head coach Wade Wilkerson Jr. replied when asked about sending out freshman kicker Austin Rehkow for a 56 yard field goal attempt with 16 seconds left. The field goal attempt came on a fourth down with two yards to go for the first down.

“Austin has hit longer kicks so we knew he had the leg for it.” Wilkerson explained further.

Rehkow did have the leg but the kick, which came from the right side hash mark, sailed wide left. The miss meant a third straight loss for the Vandals, two straight by three points or less.

“It’s a rough stretch for us obviously. I’m upset that I couldn’t hit the kick obviously but I guess I can’t dwell on it too much.” Rehkow explained.

Idaho led 14-7 at the half with points coming on an eight yard Chalich run in the first and a one yard plunge by Manley in the second. Fresno State scored on a three yard first quarter run by Marteze Waller.

Rehkow hit a 31 yard field goal in the third to put Idaho on top 17-7.

A few plays later cornerback Delancy Parham picked off a Marcus McDade pass and took it back 48 yards for the score. McDade answered by leading the Bulldogs up the field and he scored on a 10 yard run. Going into the fourth quarter Idaho was still on top, 24-14.

McDade scored twice more in the fourth, both on short runs. Between those scores Rehkow hit a 44 yard field goal. After McDade’s second fourth quarter touchdown the Bulldogs were on top 28-27 with 1:49 left on the clock.

Chalich hit LaGrone for 12 and then Epps for a gain of 19. Manley ran for four yards on first down. Chalich took his first sack of the game for a loss of five bringing up a key third and nine. Chalich found Watson near the right sideline but he wasn’t able to slip a Fresno State defender and only picked up seven yards. With hardly any hesitation Wilkerson sent out Rehkow and the kicking team.

A late sack on Chalich may have been the difference

“I thought it was going to go.” Chalich said of the 56 yard field goal attempt. “From where I was it looked good right up to the last second.”

Chalich played a great game, completing 19 of 23 passes for 206 yards and no interceptions.

Idaho drops to 2-4 with six games left to play. They will go on a two game road trip with games at Arkansas State and Ole Miss before returning home for Texas State and Old Dominion. After that they wrap up the season at Florida State and New Mexico State.

The way I look at it is Idaho won one game in 2013 so if I can beat that, even by one more game, I'm way ahead. Also North Texas won that game 40-6 so if we're looking at moral victories that's a big one.
I'm following along!!! How do you put the team logos? How do you get them so small?

Man another close loss. You definitely have your team playing hard and are capable of pulling off consecutive victories. I think you just need either one or two dynamic players to come in and put your program over the hump. Hows your recruiting going?

We have been very close in some games. A few mental errors away. Haven't landed any recruits yet but we're very close on some key ones. Decided not to do weekly recruiting updates and just do an article when I land a player. Thanks for the post.

                      AROUND THE NATION

NATHAN SCHEELHAASE LED ILLINOIS TO A BIG WIN AT NEBRASKA

UNRANKED ILLINOIS UPSETS UNDEFEATED #10 NEBRASKA
                      Lincoln, Nebraska -
Nathan Scheelhaase threw for 327 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score as Illinois took down #10 Nebraska at Memorial Stadium.

Going into the fourth quarter Nebraska held a 34-21 lead. Scheelhaase led the Illini into scoring position and Taylor Zalewski hit a 30 yard field goal to make it 34-24 Nebraska with just under 10 minutes left in the game.

Nebraska punted following a sack by senior defensive linesman Austin Teitsma and Illinois capitalized with a six yard Donovonn Young touchdown run on a read option. With five minutes to play Nebraska’s lead was cut to 34-31.

Jevaris Little broke up a third down martinez pass and Nebraska was forced to punt again. With just over a minute to play Scheelhaase threw his only touchdown pass, a five yarder, and Illinois took their first lead of the game, 38-34.

The Illinois defense held Nebraska to a three and out and Scheelhaase took a knee to run out the clock, giving Illinois their first win at Nebraska since 1924.

Illinois runningback Donovonn Young ran for 72 yards and scored three times in the win.

Nebraska’s Taylor Martinez threw for 233 yards and two scores and ran for 106 yards in the loss.

The two teams combined for 980 yards of total offense. Neither team turned the ball over once.

Illinois improves their record to 4-1 and will likely sneak into the top 25. Nebraska falls to 4-1 and will almost certainly fall from the top 10.

Following another close loss at home the Vandals return to the road hoping to take down a struggling Arkansas State team. Idaho runningback James Baker is expected to suit up for the game, his first since spraining his ankle against Northern Illinois on September 14th.

                        Players to Watch

                        ARKANSAS STATE SAFETY STERLING YOUNG

Arkansas State is led by junior safety Sterling Young on defense. Young has the ability to cover half of the field and is a great tackler. Senior defensive tackle JT Finley is a force in the middle. On offense they are missing their top player, runningback David Oku, who is out with an injury. Backup Frankie Jackson has run for 393 yards and a pair of touchdowns while filling in. JD McKissic is the top receiver and has solid breakaway speed that could give the Idaho secondary some problems. Quarterback Fredi Knighten is not a great passer but can create some problems with his legs.

                          SAME OLD STORY

For the third game in a row the Vandals have lost by three points or less. This go round was a 19-21 loss at Arkansas State.

The game started off ugly for Idaho as Arkansas State quarterback Fredi Knighten kept on a read option and went 71 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the game. Idaho was able to put together a long drive and Chad Chalich tied things up with a three yard read option keeper.

Midway through the second quarter Arkansas State’s Frankie Jackson scored from eight yards out to make it 14-7 Red Wolves. Idaho had a pair of drives stall out in the quarter and they called on Austin Rehkow to try a pair of long field goals. He hit them both, from 50 and 49 yards, to make it 14-13 Arkansas State at the half.

Chalich was injured on a scramble in the second quarter and at halftime it was discovered that he had suffered a concussion, Taylor Davis would play the remainder of the game for Idaho.

The third quarter was all punts as both offenses struggled to get anything going.

Idaho got deep into Arkansas State territory early in the fourth but Davis had an ill advised pass picked off by safety Sterling Young in the endzone.

Davis throws a pick in the endzone

The Red Wolves capitalized on the turnover and drove 80 yards for a touchdown, a five yard run by Jackson.

Idaho answered with a long drive of their own, capped by a one yard score by Jerrell Brown. Davis was indecisive and got sacked on the conversion attempt.

Idaho’s defense stopped Arkansas State on fourth down and gave Davis and the offense the ball back with 24 seconds left but four straight incompletions sealed the win for Arkansas State.

“We’ve got to find something to put us over the hump in these close games. It’s plain inexcusable.” Coach Wilkerson said after the loss.

Idaho drops to 2-5 and with Ole Miss and Florida State left on the schedule it could be a struggle for the team to reach five wins with six taking an absolute miracle.

Michigan State jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter via a 27 yard Maxwell to Aaron Burbridge pass, a six yard Nick Hill run and a one yard run by Maxwell.

Indiana finally found the endzone in the second quarter when Tre Roberson connected with Stephen Houston for a 23 yard touchdown.

Michigan State answered with a 20 yard Maxwell touchdown pass to Tony Lippett.

Nick Hill scored again in the third then Maxwell found Burbridge for another touchdown. Indiana made it 42-10 with a third quarter field goal.

Jeremy Langford added a fourth quarter touchdown to make the final 49-10 Spartans.

Michigan State came into the game ranked #18 and should climb due to their 6-0 record.
