Vandals Roster Analysis and Projected Starters
    by Zach Woosley August 17, 2013, 11:03pm

The Vandals are coming off a terrible 1-11 campaign in 2012 and have high hopes for improvement in 2013 with new head coach Wade Wilkerson Jr. at the helm. Here I'll take a look at the roster, offer some analysis and predictions and project the starters.

    Defense

Defensive end Maxx Forde recorded 37 total tackles and three sacks last season. He is the leader amongst current players. Forde is expected to be the team's top defensive player this season and will be a key piece of their defensive line. Expect him, Jesse Davis, Anthony Rice, and Ryan Edwards to be the starters. This group will go as far as Forde carries them. Besides Forde the talent here is below average.

In the linebacking corps expect a big season from senior Matthew Willis and junior Marc Millan. The two should be the teams top tacklers from their spots at outside linebacker. Willis recorded 36 total tackles last season. As far as middle linebacker it appears to be a two way battle between juniors Juan Martinez and James Randall. Expect the two of them to get the bulk of the reps inside with the better performer taking more as the season progresses.

Sophomore cornerback Solomon Dixon led the team with three interceptions in 2012 and he will have to lead a weak, inexperienced group at corner. Junior Delancy Parham has the inside track to the second starting position while sophomore Jayshawn Jordan will get a number of snaps at the nickel. Wilkerson has expressed a desire to run a lot of press man coverage so this group could see themselves isolated in man coverage a lot. That could mean a lot of opponent touchdowns if they don't step up.

At safety we have senior Trey Williams, who recorded 28 total tackles and a pair of deflections last season, and junior Njoku Bradley, who really excited the coaching staff in spring football. Bradley has the speed to cover a large area which will be key in Wilkerson's press cover 1 defensive scheme he hopes to implement. Williams is a great tackler who plays like an extra linebacker against the run.

    Specialists

At placekicker and punter Idaho is going to battle with a pair of true freshman. Kicker Trent Cowan has a strong leg, capable of hitting from up to 50 yards out if he can improve his accuracy. Punter Austin Rehkow is essentially the same story, good power with poor accuracy.

Good to have you on board. I liked the idea of using a team where every recruit could make an immediate impact. Really gonna have to nail that first class.

I'll definitely be following this. It'll be a good team to rebuild; definitely interested to see which recruits you'll target with the new coach and the pro style attack.

yeah i have some very specific traits i will be looking for in recruits, i'll probably do a write up on that at some point.

i think at first i may have to compromise on my wants some just to get warm bodies.

                    NORTH TEXAS LINEBACKER ZACHARY ORR

North Texas linebacker Zachary Orr is the leader of their defense and the Idaho offense will need to know where he is on every play. Defensive tackle Ryan Boutwell also has the ability to cause disruptions. On offense the Mean Green are led by runningback Reggie Pegram and quarterback Brock Berglund.

                          LATE TURNOVER DOOMS VANDALS

Late in the fourth quarter trailing North Texas by ten points Idaho quarterback Taylor Davis made his first mistake of the game when he tried to force a pass to receiver Najee Lovett on a slant. North Texas cornerback David Busby jumped the route to make the pick and all but sealed the deal for the Mean Green. North Texas scored on the ensuing possession and won by a final score of 38-21 .

Fullback Jake Manley scored Idaho’s only offensive touchdown

Idaho kept things close until the middle of the fourth quarter, trailing 18-21 going into the final frame.

Three times the Vandals had the ball inside the North Texas two yard line and came away empty, twice after being stopped on fourth and goal and once when they ran out of time in the first half.

“You can’t go back and ‘what if’ those calls. You just can’t. You make calls in the course of the game and you can just try to learn from them going forward but you have to trust yourself in the heat of the moment.” Idaho head coach Wade Wilkerson Jr. said after the game. Had Idaho kicked three field goals in those situations they still would have come up short.

Idaho managed just one offensive score, on a one yard run by fullback Jake Manley in the third quarter. Cornerback Solomon Dixon scored the teams other touchdown on a 26 yard pick six in the first quarter. Dixon intercepted two passes in the game.

Idaho will travel to face Wyoming next week.

Aaron Murray threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns as Georgia took down Clemson on the road. Clemson’s Tajh Boyd threw for 384 yards and three scores along with an interception in the loss.

After Celmson jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter Georgia exploded for three touchdowns in the second on runs by Todd Gurley and Kendall Marshall then a Murray TD pass. Clemson added a touchdown just before the half but failed to convert when they went for two.

The teams exchanged touchdowns in the third, setting up an epic fourth quarter.

Georgia took charge with a 31 yard Murray to Conley touchdown pass early in the fourth, pushing the lead to 35-26. Boyd hooked up with Sammy Watkins from 10 yards out to make it 35-33 with just over six minutes left to play.

Murray led his team up the field and Kendall Marshall made it 42-33 with a nine yard scoring run with just under two and a half minutes left to play. Boyd was able to connect with Seckinger for a 41 yard score to make it 42-40 with 43 seconds to play but Georgia was able to run out the clock to clinch the win.

WYOMING QB BRETT SMITH WILL BE THE BEST PLAYER ON THE FIELD

Wyoming junior quarterback Brett Smith is the unquestioned leader of his team. He struggled in the loss to Nebraska but expect him to have a good game against a much weaker opponent. Smith's primary target is senior receiver Robert Herron. Defensively the team is led by linebacker Devyn Harris and safety Darrenn White.

I'm here, looks good as usual.

Rough loss, djp. Year 1 with Idaho is usually a mulligan no matter what happens, so here's hoping you can make something of it.
