Re: Go, Vandals, Go - The Idaho Vandals

Thanks for checking in, always good to have you along for the ride.

The way I look at it is Idaho won one game in 2013 so if I can beat that, even by one more game, I'm way ahead. Also North Texas won that game 40-6 so if we're looking at moral victories that's a big one.

Idaho will be a fun one to rebuild. Tough loss to open the season bro, but like you said, it was a definite moral victory.

Yup these first few recruiting classes will be big. Always prefer to start off a chise with a win but it is what it is.

            Great to have you along.

              POWER STRUGGLE

For the second straight week the Vandals found themselves in a close game going into the fourth quarter. They were nursing a 6-3 lead as the final frame began. Neither team had been able to get anything going on offense and had settled for just field goals through the first three quarters. Idaho’s freshman kicker Trent Cowan had connected from 37 and 19 yards, both in the second quarter while Wyoming junior Stuart Williams hit on a 36 yard attempt in the third.

Trent Cowan hits the game winning field goal as time expires

Wyoming tied the game up on a 30 yard kick by Williams with just under six minutes left to play in the fourth quarter.

With his offense struggling to move the ball and the game on the line Idaho coach Wade Wilkerson Jr. made a bold decision. He sat down senior quarterback Taylor Davis, who had struggled mightily, and sent in redshirt freshman Chad Chalich. At the time Davis had completed just eight of his 28 pass attempts for 76 yards and had thrown a pair of interceptions.

“You never want to do those types of things for no reason or too soon.” Wilkerson explained after the game. “We needed a spark and me and (offensive coordinator) Kris (Cinkovich) felt it was the right time.

After a seven yard run by Jason Baker Chalich connected with Dezmon Epps for a 17 yard gain. A few plays later Chalich found Najee Lovett for 15 more yards. From there Idaho ran the ball and used up as much clock as they could.

With two seconds left on the clock Wilkerson called a time out and sent out Trent Cowan for the 29 yard game winner. Wyoming let the kicking team get set before calling a timeout of their own, hoping to “ice” the true freshman kicker.

Cowan was unaffected by the ploy and put the kick right down the middle to claim the win for Idaho.

“We’re not going to celebrate a win like this too much but it always feels good to get that first one under your belt.” Wilkerson said. “Big game by our defense too.”

Idaho improves to 1-1 on the season and will host Northern Illinois at the Kibbie Dome next week, their toughest opponent yet.

                Miami Gardens, Florida -
Miami jumped out to a 17-0 lead over the Gators in the first half and never looked back. Florida didn’t score until there was just five minutes left in the fourth quarter, already down 32-0.

Miami’s Duke Johnson ran for 106 yards and a pair of scores on 19 carries and quarterback Shane Morris threw for two more scores in the win.

Florida turned the ball over three times in the loss and only managed 206 total yards of offense.

“It’s a tough one to swallow. We really thought we could hang with those guys but we just didn’t execute.” Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel said after the loss.

Driskel completed just nine of 26 pass attempts and threw a pair of interceptions.

Florida drops to 1-1 while Miami improves to 2-0.

Idaho is looking to open the Kibbie Dome with a bang as they’ll be playing host to #22 Northern Illinois. Idaho will be looking to get something going on offense as they have struggled thus far, scoring only one offensive touchdown through two games. Northern Illinois scored 37 points in their win at Iowa two weeks ago.

                  Players to Watch

HUSKIES’ QB JORDAN LYNCH IS THE BEST ATHLETE IDAHO HAS SEEN ALL YEAR

Fifth year senior QB Jordan Lynch leads the Huskies into the Kibbie Dome. Lynch threw for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2012 along with over 1,800 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground. Lynch and senior runningback Akeem Daniels form a dangerous duo in the Northern Illinois backfield. On defense the Huskies are led by senior safety Jimmie Ward, who will likely be playing on Sundays next year. Ward tallied 65 tackles and 3 interceptions last season. Fellow safety Dechane Durant gives the Huskies a formidable back end to their defense.

                        Vandals Searching for Offensive Spark
                        by Zach Woosley September 10, 2013, 1:03pm

QUARTERBACK CHAD CHALICH THROWS A PASS IN PRACTICE

The Vandals have scored just one offensive touchdown through their first two contests. They are averaging just 273 yards of total offense so far. With only a two game sample size it's hard to say the team needs to make wholesale changes on offense but they're certainly looking for a spark.

At the end of last week's win over Wyoming redshirt freshman quarterback Chad Chalich replaced Taylor Davis and helped lead the team to a game winning field goal.

"There was definitely a different atmosphere in the huddle when coach made the switch." One Idaho offensive starter said, wishing to remain anonymous.

"Chad got the job done when we asked him to." Coach Wade Wilkerson Jr. said. "We're not looking to make the change permanent at this point." He added when asked who would start the home opener against Northern Illinois this week.

As far as other plans to get the offense going the team should strive to make the running game work to take pressure off their less talented passer, whoever that may be. Short timing based routes should also help with confidence at the QB spot.

One thing we could potentially see is sophomore receiver Marquan Major lining up at quarterback some. He has been playing the role of Jordan Lynch in practices the past few days and looks to have the ability to move the chains with his legs or with short passes.

Another thing to look for is how short of a leash Davis will be on in a game where the team will likely need to score a lot of points to hang with the Huskies.

"It's early so we don't want to reinvent the wheel just yet." Offensive Coordinator Kris Cinkovich told me when I asked what other moves they planned to make.

Nice article. It will be interesting to see how the quarterback position plays out over the course of this season.

yeah, i'm not married to any of our current QBs so i'm not afraid to play the hot hand.

the old "if you have two quarterbacks you dont have one" certainly applies here.

                                A LEGEND IS BORN

Chad Chalich inherited a team that was trailing 21-6 at the half and had shown no spark on offense at all. The starting runningback was out. The coaching staff was probably just putting him in to see what they had for the future.

Chalich proceeded to turn the ball over on downs on his first possession. He then threw a pick six on his second possession, making it 28-6 NIU. The following possession resulted in another pick six on a pass that was tipped. 35-6 NIU. Idaho’s coaches started looking over their depth chart at quarterback.

Then, just as the third quarter was coming to an end something clicked. Idaho’s coaching staff switched to their two minute, no huddle offense.

Chalich completed 4 of 5 passes and hit tight end Michael LaGrone for a three yard touchdown. 35-14 NIU after the two point conversion, a Chalich pass to WR Deon Watson.

As the fourth quarter began the Vandals were minus their starting runningback James Baker. They had also lost their top receiver, Najee Lovett, midway through the third quarter. They had also lost receiver Roman Runner on the second play of the second quarter. They were also trailing #22 NIU by a score of 35-14. Most of the 12,000 plus seats at the Kibbie Dome were now vacated. Those who left early will likely regret it today.

Chalich completed 6 of 9 passes to start the quarter, driving all the way down to the NIU three yard line. He threw a perfect strike to Marquan Major on a slant in the endzone. Major took his eye off the ball and bobbled it and watched as an NIU defender picked it out of the air.

NIU punted. Chalich went right back to Major, connecting for a 17 yard gain before hitting Kyren Watts for 10 yards. Chalich scrambled for 10 yards, down to the 12 yard line. Then it was back to Watts for a touchdown. Jerrel Brown ran in the two point conversion and it was 35-22 with five and a half minutes left to play.

NIU punted again. Just over five minutes left. Chad Chalich needed only four plays to get the Vandals back into the endzone. A five yard scramble. A 17 yard connection with Watts. Back to Major for 7 more to the 14 where he hit LaGrone for another score. Cowan hit the point after to make it 35-29. Just over four minutes to play.

NIU scored and got the conversion, making it 43-29 with about three minutes left. Maybe the fairy tale ending was over.

Not so fast. Chalich hit Major twice for 39 yards. Then to LaGrone for 16. Backup tight end Clayton Homme was the target for a 10 yard TD strike. Eric Lemke caught the conversion and with two minutes to play it was 43-37 NIU.

Idaho used all three timeouts and got the ball back with forty two seconds left in the game. Everyone was on the edge of their seats. Everyone.

Maurice Trotter dropped a pass from Chalich. (Dropped passes were a theme on the day). Deon Watson caught a 14 yard pass. Maurice Trotter redeemed the previous play with a 34 yard catch and run, down to the 12 yard line. Watson and Watts took turns dropping passes. Chalich connected with Major down to the four yard line. With 11 seconds to play Chalich took the snap. He backpedaled and scanned the field. Dezmon Epps broke free on an in route and Chalich drilled it home. Touchdown. Cowan kicked the extra point and it was all over.

Chalich’s stat line: 36 of 60 for 429 yards. Five touchdowns and two picks. Take away the two picks that were tipped. Now take away the 13 drops.

“We certainly couldn’t have predicted it. It was a real roller-coaster for us.” Coach Wade Wilkerson Jr. explained. “We never want to throw the ball 75 times in a game but we were way down and we wanted Chad to get some reps. Then we told him to run the two minute drill and it all worked out. What a game.”
