    ON A ROLL

For the second straight week in Idaho two things happened. First, the Vandals leaned on their running game. Second, they won a game. Idaho took down Old Dominion by a final score of 38-19. The Vandals ran the ball 44 times for 206 yards and two scores. Chalich threw 35 times for 257 yards and three touchdowns.

Idaho’s defense did give up 289 yards passing to Taylor Heinicke along with three touchdowns but it wasn’t enough for the Monarchs.

“We’ve got something going here. The running game is clicking and we’re allowing it to carry us. We’re very happy with these past two games.” Head coach Wade Wilkerson said after the Vandals second straight home win.

Chalich led the way with 89 yards on 16 carries while James Baker added 53 yards on 12 carries. Kristoffer Olugbode carried the ball nine times for 44 yards and a score. Jerrel Brown also scored a rushing touchdown but contributed just five yards on three carries.

In the passing game it was all about Dezmon Epps once again as he hauled in 10 passes for 109 yards and a pair of scores. Tight end Michael LaGrone added 63 yards on seven receptions and also scored a touchdown.

    Brown scores a late TD

Old Dominion wide receiver Blair Roberts caught four passes for 69 yards to lead the Monarchs.

Idaho sits at 4-6 and will have next week off then travel to Florida State in two weeks before wrapping up their season at New Mexico State.

Nice win, definitely showing some things to look forward to next season. Not to mention getting all these recruits doesn't hurt at all. Dynasty is looking good so far, hope the season ends well for you. Having the momentum heading into Florida State helps.

Re: Go, Vandals, Go - The Idaho Vandals

Thanks for the post. Obviously we have no chane against FSU but if we can get out of there without anyone being killed we'll be happy.

Finishing the season with a win would be great and I'd be very happy with a 5 win season, actually I would be happy with the four wins we have already.

Got a couple around the nations coming with some nice features then we'll be headed to the Doak.

              AROUND THE NATION

              BOISE STATE QB JOE SOUTHWICK

              BOISE JOE
              Boise, Idaho -
2,506 yards. 31 touchdown passes. Four interceptions. That’s Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick’s stat line so far this season. He’s also led his team to an 8-1 overall record and a perfect 5-0 mark in Mountain West games. Barring a three game losing streak to end the season their spot in the conference championship is essentially already locked up.

Two weeks ago, in a 44-0 rout of Colorado State Southwick threw for 208 yards and four touchdowns before spending the bulk of the second half on the bench. He likely would have had another touchdown but he audibled to a run play on first and goal at the six and Jay Ajayi scored on the play.

“Just an unselfish player who wants to win.” Ajayi replied when asked to describe Southwick. “Great teammate too.”

Southwick is likely playing his last “big time” football as the NFL won’t likely come calling. That doesn’t bother Joe, who says he’d be more than happy to continue his career in another league.

"Everyone I've talked to, Coach Pete or the new staff... Their recommendation is try to play as long as you can," Southwick said. "I'll have the rest of my life to go out and try to get the best job I can or pursue any kind of business avenue, but for now, it's just continue to have fun and play the game I really enjoy. If I can do that for however many more years, I'm all in."

The rest of the Boise State team is “all in” as well, hoping to finish their season strong and continue to climb up the polls.

                  AROUND THE NATION

                  FLORIDA STATE’S JAMEIS WINSTON

                  CHASING PERFECTION
                  Tallahassee, Florida -
With Ohio State’s puzzling loss to Illinois yesterday Florida State is now the nation’s only undefeated team. After a closer than it should have been win over Syracuse the Seminoles sit at 10-0 and have their eyes on perfection.

Getting there hasn’t been easy. First there was the two point win over Nevada in game two. Then they survived back to back overtime games at Boston College and at home against Maryland in games four and five. Game six saw the ‘Noles top Clemson by four on the road.

Yesterday’s narrow win over Syracuse seemed to sum up the season thus far. The Orange jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a pair of first half field goals while the Florida State offense mostly sputtered and punted. Jameis Winston looked lost at times, completing just five of his 13 pass attempts and throwing one interception. Winston did give the ‘Noles the lead on a two yard scoring run just before halftime, however, he was injured on the play and would not return.

Florida State finally got the break they needed midway through the third quarter when backup quarterback Jacob Coker connected with runningback Devonta Freeman on a screen and he took it 55 yards to the house. Roberto Aguayo kicked a 45 yard field goal late in the third to give the Seminoles a 17-6 lead going into the fourth. Syracuse found the endzone on their first drive and made it 17-14 with the two point conversion.

Both teams defenses dominated the remainder of the game and Florida State held on once again.

“A lot of times it’s about finding a way to get the win in adverse conditions. Blowouts don’t build winners.” Head coach Jimbo Fisher explained when asked about all the close wins.

Florida State hosts Idaho and travels to Florida to wrap up the regular season. They’ve already locked up a spot in the conference championship game and will face either Virginia Tech or Georgia Tech.

Idaho’s little win streak will undoubtedly come to an abrupt halt this week as they travel to Tallahassee to play the nation’s only undefeated team, Florida State. FSU is 10-0 and ranked number one. Idaho is merely hoping to get out of there with a little pride and most of their players.

                    Players to Watch

NOBODY ON IDAHO’S DEFENSE CAN MATCH UP WITH RASHAD GREENE

Every player on Florida State’s offense poses a problem for Idaho. Jameis Winston has struggled some as a redshirt freshman but the passer should have his way with the Vandals defense. Runningback Devonta Freeman should easily add to his 795 yards and eight touchdowns. Florida State’s receivers should prove to be a real problem for the Idaho secondary. Rashad Greene has 49 receptions for 601 yards and five scores. Tight end Nick O’Leary is second with 36, 532 and 3. On defense it’s an even bigger mismatch with stars at every level. Mario Edwards leads the team with 68 tackles despite playing as a down defensive end 90% of the time. He also leads the way with 8.5 sacks. He will give the Vandals’ offensive line fits. Linebacker Christian Jones is even more dangerous. Jones has 66 tackles, 3.5 sacks and covers the field very quickly. Cornerback LaMarcus Joyner is rarely tested and can take away even the best receivers in the game. Karlos Williams is like a linebacker with speed playing safety. He has a pair of interceptions to go along with 29 tackles.

EPPS SPLITS TWO FSU DEFENDERS TO SCORE, CHALICH FIGHTS HIS WAY INTO THE ENDZONE

                      Scoreboard1st2nd3rd4thFinal
                      Idaho [4-6]3140724
                      Florida State [10-0]7371431

                      THE KING STAY THE KING

If you had told anyone outside the Idaho locker room that the Vandals would hold a lead over FSU at the half it’s very likely you would have gotten laughed at. If you’d told them it would be tied going into the fourth quarter it’s almost certain that would be their reaction. If you said FSU would need a last-second touchdown to win the game they probably would have needed to sit down.

If you’d said all of the above then you would have been right. Idaho tied the game at 24-24 with 1:53 left to play and FSU needed a big drive that culminated in a last second one yard TD run by James Wilder Jr. to wrap things up.

Idaho used a very run heavy offense for the second straight week. The Vandals ran the ball 42 times for 175 yards. Chalich passed just 17 times, completing nine of them for 129 yards and a score. Florida State ran 33 offensive plays total. Idaho racked up 304 total yards of offense and 20 first downs. Florida State had nine first downs. Idaho possessed the ball 1.5 times longer than FSU.

Jerrell Brown’s late TD wasn’t enough

“It shows us what we can do when we run the ball well. It’s a great sign for the future. Obviously you play to win games but we’re very happy with this one.” Idaho coach Wade Wilkerson Jr. said after the loss.

Chalich lead the team with 70 yards on 11 carries and added a score. James Baker carried 10 times for 38 yards. Jerrell Brown picked up 34 yards on six carries, the most effective of all the Idaho runningbacks. Kristofer Olugbode struggled, gaining just 12 yards on eight carries.

Dezmon Epps made the most of just four receptions, totaling 60 yards and adding a touchdown.

Idaho will finish their season at New Mexico State.

                          AROUND THE NATION

                          IDAHO RECEIVER NAJEE LOVETT

                          A SEASON LOST
                          Tallahassee, Florida -
Najee Lovett looks on as his team battles number one Florida State. For Lovett it’s an unfamiliar feeling. Watching the teammates he loves play the game he loves while he looks on from the sideline.

“It’s incredibly frustrating. You have no idea.” He says when asked to describe the feeling.

Lovett broke his ankle in Idaho’s third game of the season against Northern Illinois. In just over two and a half games Lovett caught 20 passes for 236 yards. In 2012 he caught 50 passes for 548 yards and six scores. He was on pace to have his best season as a senior.

“You gotta be real about things.” Lovett says. “There’s a chance I won’t play real, competitive football again.”

Lovett’s skill set likely won’t transfer to the NFL but it’s possible he could play again in another league, if he desired to.

Lovett is hopeful that he will be able to play in Idaho’s final game this coming Saturday at New Mexico State, he’s currently out of the cast he’s been in and listed as questionable on the team’s website.

“It’s been real tough. Me and (fellow injured senior receiver) Roman (Runner) have stayed real close. We going through the same thing so it’s good to have someone who understands to talk to.” Lovett explains.

Roman Runner’s injury was more severe and required surgery. He’s applied for a medical redshirt but has yet to hear back from the NCAA.

“I just love the game and my team so much. I was really hoping to help win some games and be part of this. I mean I’m still around but it’s not the same.”

Lovett is undecided on his next move but says he will likely return home to California once the season ends and get ready for pro day workouts and hope to catch on somewhere.

Idaho was seconds away from taking down number one Florida State last week and if they play like that they should steamroll New Mexico State. Look for Idaho to continue to pound the football as they have the past two weeks. Rumors have been circulating that wide receiver Najee Lovett could suit up for the game. Jerrell Brown will get his first start of the season at runningback.

WR AUSTIN FRANKLIN IS OPTION 1, 2, AND 3 FOR THE NMSU OFFENSE

Tight End Perris Scoggins is second on the team with 39 receptions for 566 yards and four touchdowns. On defense the Aggies are led by OLB Trashaun Nixon who has recorded 93 tackles and 5.5 sacks. TRAP GAME?

Idaho was coming into their game against lowly New Mexico State after having put a real scare into number one Florida State the previous week in Tallahassee. New Mexico State had managed just one win to this point in the season.

                              Trap game? Yes.

New Mexico State jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and the Vandals just couldn’t overcome it, losing 24-21 to a rare inferior opponent.

“It’s very frustrating. We saw what this team was capable of last week and to come down here and lay an egg? Immensely frustrating.” Head Coach Wade Wilkerson Jr. said after the loss.

Olugbode scores late and leaves it up to the defense

Shortly after the final gun quarterback Chad Chalich was seen on the sidelines screaming at Wilkerson as well as several offensive players. Chalich slammed his helmet to the ground and stormed off the field.

Idaho finishes their season with a 4-8 record. Their best season since 2010’s 6-7 campaign. Since 2000 they have had just two seasons with more than four wins.

“We realize that given the team’s recent history four wins is pretty good. We’re far from happy with that and we know we have a lot of work to do.” Wilkerson stated.

When asked about Chalich’s behavior after the loss Wilkerson answered: “I’m not going to speak about that.”
