This is going to be a fun season. Mason seems very ready to get going under coach Geezy.

Unreal update. Love all the talk of the "uniqueness" of Mason. Should be some fun things in store for the Tigers offense, especially with Rodgers at your disposal as well. I hope we get to hear more about the Tigers playcalling either on gamedays or midweek!

It's funny, I was going to make a comment about just how "ordinary" your team looks ratings wise, but it seems like it must just be a feature of the progression in NCAA 12, as there are a ton of teams with low ratings. It makes it cool that the real big name programs are easy to spot, as you only had what TWO programs with A ratings? Even with your team looking on the up and up though, it's going to be a real murderer's row for you though getting through that division! No matter what happens, a win against Tulane is a must!

                Thanks man.

LSU-Tulane has certainly taken on a whole new meaning. I can't even imagine what that Superdome atmosphere is going to be like and how that game will feel for me personally.

First things first though...gotta take care of business against FSU.

Agreed...I am really looking forward to utilizing Mason's skillset. With his speed, throwing power, and throwing accuracy being so high, I am a little surprised he is only an 83 overall. Seems very underrated.

I have big plans for this kid.

The most intriguing thing for me about Mason is that he is a 76 overall wide receiver (he has a 76 cth rating!). I am definitely going to try to line him up in the slot and throw him a pass or two every now and then. He was so close to being Tulane's quarterback a couple of years ago; in hindsight, I am glad we failed to land him knowing what I know now. LOL

As for your other observation, I feel like in the past three or four years or so, team ratings have leveled out around this B/C area. At first, it was alarming, however I feel as though the game is playing better than ever now. I like that every team has some type of weakness on its roster, which more accurately reflects real life. And, as evidenced by me being let go by Tulane, the game is still offering a great challenge.

I must say though that it is very odd that USC is the second A rated team but is currently sitting outside of the Top 25.

You know me; I love a challenge. It ultimately may have cost me my job at Tulane, but in the end, it was a whole lot of fun.

Game 1, Year 1 Preview (2027 season): #10 Florida St. Seminoles at #23 LSU Tigers

                  GAME 1 PREVIEW

                  Courtesy

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

                  ....................3 1/2....................

LSU last faced Florida St. in 1991 at Tiger Stadium.

Series History: LSU is currently 2-8 all-time versus Florida St. The last time these two teams met in Baton Rouge came in 1991, a game Bobby Bowden's Seminoles won over Curley Hallman's Tigers 27-16. The two schools wouldn't meet again until 2016 in Tallahassee. In a year in which new LSU head coach D. Geezy was busy leading Tulane to its first ever national title, the Tigers blew a 21-10 fourth quarter lead and fell 25-21 to the Noles at Doak Campbell Stadium in week 2 of the '16 campaign.

                  2026 Season Recaps:

: Led by redshirt senior QB Antonio Thompson's 39 touchdown passes and then-sophomore RB Kelvin Powell's 1,338 yard 18 touchdown season, Florida St. finished the 2026 campaign 12-2, including a 9-0 conference record, winning the ACC in dominant fashion and finishing the year ranked 8th in the nation. The Seminoles' only losses last season were to SEC programs - a 37-21 defeat at the hands of rival Florida, along with a 42-28 loss to Alabama at the Orange Bowl. The team returns only 5 starters on offense and 3 starters on defense, and will hope that Powell can lead them to ACC title glory once again.

: LSU finished the 2026 campaign with an 8-5 record, finishing unranked for a fourth consecutive season. Then-sophomore QB Rob Mason threw for 29 touchdowns while recently departed RB Jamie Stover rushed for 1,563 yards and 10 touchdowns, however the team's five losses ultimately led to a coaching change despite a 32-7 Music City Bowl victory over Arkansas St. Now led by former Tulane head coach D. Geezy, the Tigers return 5 starters on offense and 5 starters on defense.

                  Schedules/Results:

                  Head Coach D. Geezy's Take

LSU head coach D. Geezy addressed the media on Thursday ahead of his debut game this weekend.

After what's been a crazy off-season, a little over 48 hours from now we'll finally be lining up on the field and facing a very stout Florida St. squad. The keys to winning, no matter who you play, will be eliminating mistakes and turnovers. Those are items that have plagued this program for the past several years and prevented it from getting to the next level. Both offensive coordinator Anthony High and myself have emphasized to (junior) Rob Mason just how important it is that he plays smart and efficient and takes care of the football; the same goes for (true freshman) RB Scottie Rodgers.

On the defensive side of the ball, we must figure out how to stop RB Kelvin Powell from going nuts like he did so many times last year against opponents. He was a 1,300-yard back last season for them and was one of the top RB recruits in the nation a couple of years ago out of Gainsville, Florida. He could be poised for a big year, so if we're to win, we will need to figure out how to keep him in check.

Obviously these past several months have been wild on both a professional level and on a personal level for me with changing schools and now being on another team's sideline after 17 years at Tulane. I think we have the team and the people in place to have success early, and we hope to come out of the gates the right way Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.

                  - LSU head coach D. Geezy

Let's go! Talk about a marquee matchup to get things under way. Powell is real danger man for FSU, but probably your best strength defensively is on the defensive line so if they can plug up the holes and you can keep him in check, you can force their inexperienced quarterback to have to beat you. Good luck!

Yes!! I am so ready for this season to kickoff and see Coach Geezy on the Tiger sideline. Your roster actually came out looking better than I expected. The linebackers and secondary are young but you have so much potential in both those areas and young guys who will only get better, you have to be excited.

I am hoping to see Brady Carter step up into that spark and big play role for your offense. I don't see too much speed outside of him so I think his ability to stretch the field and make the defense defend the edges will be critical.

No surprises on the schedule being brutal. I know how you roll. I think this opening game against Florida State will be a good measuring stick of where the program is starting out. Kelvin Powell looks like the real deal and will really put your young linebackers to the test along with the new defensive scheme. Speaking of young linebackers, Mooney looks like a stud. He is going to be scary in a couple seasons.

Can't wait to see this one kickoff and know you will be enjoying it with the new sound system! Geaux Tigers!

Great observation on the QB being inexperienced. Junior Reese is a redshirt senior and has not thrown a single pass in his career up to this point. Hopefully we can rattle him early and the Tiger Stadium crowd does its part to baptize him tonight.

The keys to victory are simple - play mistake-free football on offense and get Scottie Rodgers going early + win the line of scrimmage and not let Kelvin Powell go wild on us. We need to seize some early momentum and get the Death Valley crowd going nuts from the get-go. I feel really good about this game.

Can't wait to see this one kickoff and know you will be enjoying it with the new sound system! Geaux Tigers!
Thanks, Cheese. I actually think I can win with this roster, despite it having just a "C+" overall rating (which I think is bull, but whatever).

I think we have a significant advantage with the speed we have at quarterback. I can't express enough just how excited I am to have Rob Mason under center, a guy I really wanted to sign a couple of years ago back at Tulane (and a guy whose 83 overall rating I also think is bull). I guess you can say now that it was a blessing in disguise that he ultimately chose the Tigers.

Another player I'd like to point out again is Scottie Rodgers. Don't sleep on this cat. As I said before, he doesn't have the speed that Reggie Moore did, but he just "feels" like the same type of elite player Reggie was, when using him in practice sessions these past couple of weeks. Yesterday, I got curious as to how he compares to Reggie in other areas ratings-wise, so I went into my archived memory card save from 2014 and I learned that he is better than Reggie was in virtually every other category besides speed back when he was a true freshman (that route-running difference tho ):

...so yeah, something to keep an eye on.

I must say, Brady Carter looks incredible on kickoff and punt returns in practice. I expect him to take at least a couple to the house this season, and his speed is very evident when I get him the ball on offense on short passes and receiver screens. That and high-percentage passes to both Scottie and his brother, TE Lucas Rodgers, will be staples of our offense this season.

Good point about this game being a measuring stick for us. They're ranked #10 in the nation, but with us playing them at our place, this is a game I truly expect to win.

And yes, I am pretty amped up to finally play a game with this new sound system and also to hear my new array of custom sounds. I recently heard that the FSU band will be playing the Tomahawk Chop a good bit tonight despite this being a road game for them.

                              #23 24 -- 0-1

With under a minute to go, true freshman WR Brady Carter Jr. dropped this perfectly placed deep ball by QB Rob Mason which potentially could have been the game-winner.

#23 LSU builds up 21-3 first half lead but a handful of critical mistakes dooms them in 28-24 loss to #10 Florida St. on opening night | Missed chip shot field goal, crucial fumble, and potential game-winning dropped pass by a trio of true freshmen seals loss in Geezy's debut | Tigers' offense goes stagnant despite being spotted two defensive touchdowns | Team now heads into Lubbock next week to face Texas Tech already in "must win" mode

Baton Rouge, LA -- With 2:46 remaining until halftime, homestanding LSU held a commanding 21-3 lead, and all felt right in the world for the announced sellout crowd in Baton Rouge during new Tigers head coach D. Geezy's debut. However, behind a series of critical errors committed by LSU and a solid performance by QB Junior Reese and the Seminoles offense, Florida St. was able to somehow come away with a 28-24 season-opening triumph over the Tigers on Saturday night. Reese finished the game 24 of 33 for 297 yards and 2 touchdowns, as the Noles knocked off the Tigers for the 9th time in 11 tries all-time.

Florida St. star RB Kelvin Powell contributed to his team's early miscues when he fumbled in the second quarter and it got returned by LSU DE Jon Jackson (#72) for a touchdown, giving the Tigers a 21-3 advantage.

The Tigers were able to amass its big lead all in the second quarter. After a scoreless first period, true freshman RB Scottie Rodgers' 3-yard touchdown run gave LSU a 7-3 lead. Amidst much hype throughout the off-season, Rodgers finished the game with 56 rushing yards on 14 carries to go along with 5 receptions for 72 yards in his debut.

Moments after Rodgers' score, the Tigers defense got into the act. This time, LSU DE/LB Matt Manning's hit on Reese caused an errant pass that landed in the awaiting hands of senior DE Joel McFarland, and the cousin of former LSU and NFL star DL Anthony McFarland returned the interception 50 yards for a touchdown, increasing the Tigers' lead to 14-3.

On FSU's very next offensive play from scrimmage, Tigers true freshman SS Dominique Woods would strip Seminoles star RB Kelvin Powell of the football and reserve DE Jon Jackson recovered and returned the ball 19 yards for another defensive touchdown, making the score 21-3.

"We talked all week about getting out to a fast start," said Geezy, who, after spending the past 17 seasons at Tulane, was working another team's sideline as a head coach for the first time. "Unfortunately we were not able to sustain the momentum. We had a piss poor effort the rest of the way, and that's on me."

Florida St. (1-0) would first strike back with under a minute remaining until halftime. Reese's 1-yard touchdown pass to WR Herman Gordon made the score 21-10. Then, an inexplicable field goal miss by Tigers true freshman PK Ross Bryant from 21 yards away as the first half clock expired gave the Seminoles another dose of momentum heading into the break.

Despite being blasted in the air by true freshman SS Dominique Woods, FSU WR Herman Gordon's 1-yard touchdown reception just before halftime was his first of two scores on the night and seemingly swung the game's momentum just before the break.

After forcing a Tigers three and out to start the second half, FSU went on a long 13-play drive which would culminate with another scoring hookup between Reese and Gordon, this time from 11 yards away, pulling the Seminoles to within four at 21-17 midway through the third quarter. Gordon, the Seminoles' speedy slot receiver, finished the game with 4 receptions for 46 yards and the two scores.

Another error by a true freshman, this time a fumble by Rodgers deep in his own territory, turned the ball right back over to FSU and it netted the visiting team a 36-yard field goal by PK John Barber that cut the Tigers lead to 21-20.

Early in the fourth quarter, Florida St. was finally able to capture its first lead since early in the game when FB Jason Bell plunged into the end zone from 2 yards away and subsequently caught the ensuing two point conversion reception, giving his team a 28-21 lead with 7:37 remaining following a long 8-play 94-yard possession.

In the second half, Powell began to show off the skills that made him the nation's #2 rated high school running back prospect in 2025 and he finished the game with 262 all-purpose yards.
LSU got multiple opportunities to tie the game and/or take the lead the rest of the way, but they ultimately faltered. A drive deep into Seminoles territory would net only a 21-yard field goal after Geezy elected not to go for it on fourth and goal from the 4-yard line, making the score 28-24 with 5:29 to go.

"I make that call 100 times out of 100 there," said Geezy. "There was still 5 1/2 minutes remaining and I had confidence that our defense would get a stop."

The Tigers defense did indeed get a stop, however not before Powell did what he did best, getting big chunk plays on the ground and helping the Seminoles milk the clock down to under two minutes to go. Powell, a junior and the former #2 high school running back recruit in the nation two years ago, finished with 105 rushing yards on 16 carries along with a game-high 6 receptions for 64 yards.

LSU got the ball back with just over a minute to go after a drive-killing holding penalty and a third down sack by DT Travis Fellows forced a Seminoles punt, however it was all for naught as the Tigers offense, plagued by a handful of drops throughout the game, remained cold and another crucial error by a young player would cost them.

Florida St. DE Albert Stover's second time sacking LSU QB Rob Mason would set the Tigers up with a 2nd and long with under a minute to play and out of timeouts. On the very next play, Mason, who played admirably despite the team's low offensive scoring output, threw a perfectly placed deep ball that landed in the hands of a wide open true freshman WR Brady Carter Jr., however the 4-star prospect out of Kentucky saw the ball slip out of his grasp despite having nothing but green in front of him. Ultimately, the mistake would lead to the Tigers eventually turning the ball over on downs after back to back incomplete passes on third and fourth down, allowing FSU to run the clock out on kneel downs.

"We talked about playing mistake-free football, and I count not one, not two, but three huge mistakes, including one there at the end that probably gets us the win," said an unusually testy Geezy in his post game presser before things suddenly escalated out of nowhere.

"The 'Noles were who we thought they were. They were who we thought they were. We played them in Baton Rouge; everybody played four quarters. The 'Noles were who we thought they were! That's why we took the damn field! Now if you want to crown 'em, then crown their a**! But they are who we thought they were, and we let 'em off the hook," Geezy exclaimed as he stormed out of the media room.

LSU (0-1) will travel to Lubbock next week to face Texas Tech (0-0). The game will mark the first meeting between the Tigers and the Red Raiders since 1957.

FSU sophomore TE Greg Hill (#87) did the Tomahawk Chop as he and his teammates celebrated the Seminoles' opening night victory at Death Valley.

LSU fans packed Tiger Stadium eager to watch their team under new leadership.

A Death Valley tradition, Tigers players tapped the "Win Bar" on their way out to the field.

After spending the past 17 seasons in New Orleans coaching at Tulane, veteran head coach D. Geezy made his debut in purple and gold Saturday night.

True freshman RB Scottie Rodgers scored a 3-yard touchdown to give his team a 7-3 second quarter lead then immediately turned to go celebrate with his older brother, junior TE Lucas Rodgers.

Pic 1 of 3: Junior all-purpose defender Matt Manning (#90), who took snaps at defensive end, defensive tackle, and linebacker on Saturday, laid a vicious hit on Seminoles QB Junior Reese in the second quarter.

Pic 2 of 3: Manning's jarring hit resulted in an errantly thrown ball that wound up in the hands of senior DE Joel McFarland.

Pic 3 of 3: After snagging the ball out of the air, McFarland, a Louisiana native and cousin of former LSU DE Anthony "Booger" McFarland, raced 50 yards for a touchdown that extended LSU's lead to 14-3.

The LSU faithful in attendance were feeling good after another defensive touchdown on the very next play from scrimmage following McFarland's gave their team a 21-3 advantage.

FSU RB Kelvin Powell was held in check for a good portion of the first half, but getting to the second level and getting tackled by safeties, including here by S/LB Mario Reed (#28) and FS Trey Wade (#8), became commonplace in the second half.

Third year QB Rob Mason was as flashy as advertised, finishing with several long runs, though he ended the night with only 45 rushing yards due to three big sacks he took during the contest.

Seminoles FB Jason Bell gave the Tigers problems all evening long. Here, he powered through for a 2-yard touchdown that gave FSU a 26-21 lead, and he then followed it up with a two-point conversion reception that extended that lead to 28-21.

LSU's vaunted defensive line came through in the clutch when DT Travis Fellows sacked Florida St. QB Junior Reese on third and long with just over a minute to go in the contest.

Unfortunately on the Tigers very last offensive possession, Seminoles DE Albert Stover came away with his second of two sacks on the night, including this back-breaking takedown in the game's final moments.

The dusk settles after a fierce back and forth battle at Tiger Stadium on opening night that unfortunately ended with a close loss for the home team.
