Boy-Z State next. 6-0 vs. 6-0. The Mountain West Conference has never seen such an epic matchup. Just the usual MWC rabble after that. If we get past Boy-Z for the first time in this dynasty, we could be winning hardware.

(Of course, I know how that game and this season turns out, but I'm responding like I don't know. I just finished playing the 2023 season the other day. I'm delaying starting the 2024 season a bit until I can get deeper into posting the 2021 season. It feels overwhelming at times trying to catch up. I would love to be caught up so I could add more detail to my reports. For now, I'm just putting my head down and pushing forward as hard as I can to get caught up.)

If I resorted to that, I might as well dig a six-foot deep hole and put myself in it.

I've played some pretty exciting games that haven't been posted yet. After playing them, I've been like, "Oh, I can't wait to post that!" But I know it could be a month or two before that particular game ever finds its way to this thread.

          Game Notes
With two unbeaten nationally ranked teams, this could be the biggest game in the history of the Mountain West Conference, certainly for Air Force in this dynasty. Not only will the winner have a leg up in the division, but a possible New Year’s Six bowl game could be on the line. The Broncos are 3-0 against the Falcons in this dynasty. Both quarterbacks are finding the end zone and protecting the football, as Air Force’s Zachary Larrier has 16 touchdown passes and three interceptions, while Boy-Z State’s Chase Garbers has 13 touchdown passes and three picks. The ground game will feature Air Force’s Trey Taylor (136 carries, 606 yards, 10 touchdowns) and Boy-Z State’s Andrew Van Buren (108 carries, 675 yards, four touchdowns).

            2021 SEASON, GAME 7

Kukea Emmsley of Boy-Z State takes off with a fumble that he returned 34 yards for a touchdown.

Boy-Z State’s (from left) Jermani Brown, Marques Evans and Tyric Lebeauf intercepted Air Force passes.

            CHOKE JOB!
Air Force gags miserably on 21-point lead,
drops battle of unbeatens to Boy-Z State

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — What’s it going to take for Air Force to beat Boy-Z State?

            Seriously.

Here’s a formula that is destined to fail: Build a 28-7 halftime lead, get silly by slinging the ball all over the field, turn over the ball on four straight drives and watch as a dangerous Boy-Z State offense makes you pay the price for your foolishness.

Air Force is now 0-4 against Boy-Z State after gagging away a 21-point halftime lead in a 41-31 loss in a clash between 6-0 teams on Oct. 23, 2021.

The Broncos scored 31 straight points in the second half. They were trailing 28-24 with under two minutes to play before getting a 12-yard touchdown pass from Chase Garbers to Cole Johnson with 1:47 remaining and a 34-yard fumble return touchdown by Kukea Emmsley just 14 seconds later.

It might have been the worst meltdown in B-Dawg’s coaching career, which dates back to NCAA 2004.

“This is soul-crushing,” B-Dawg said. “At halftime, we thought we had exorcised our demons against these guys. I should have run the ball on every single play in the second half. We certainly would have had a much better chance of winning.”

Zachary Larrier threw three interceptions and was guilty of the fumble that became six points for the Broncos. Two of those interceptions, and obviously the fumble, led to touchdowns for Boy-Z State.

Meanwhile, running back Trey Taylor was getting it done on the ground, running 19 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns. He did most of the damage in the first half before being ghosted in the second half.

“I got caught up in the moment instead of looking at the big picture,” B-Dawg said. “We should have done everything possible to shorten the game, which means more running, less throwing it all over the yard.”

Before the nightmarish second half, it was a dream first half for the Falcons. They gave up the first touchdown on a 45-yard pass from Garbers to Khalil Shakir, but then scored four straight touchdowns, the last on a 1-yard run by Taylor on the final play of the first half. Air Force was 9-for-10 on third down in the first half.

“Everything felt so comfortable,” B-Dawg said. “You can never get comfortable against these guys.”

The Broncos had to settle for a field goal on their first drive, keeping the Falcons ahead by three possessions at 28-10.

“I wasn’t worried,” B-Dawg said. “We got the stop on third-and-eight and were more than happy to give them the three points and stay up by three possessions with less time on the clock.”

Everything began to change when Jermani Brown picked off a third-and-10 pass and returned it 34 yards to Air Force’s 12-yard line with 6:17 left in the third quarter. On third-and-three, Andrew Van Buren ran up the middle and bowled over a defender for a 5-yard touchdown run, cutting the Falcons’ lead to 28-17 with 5:25 left in the third.

Cracks were beginning to form in the dam.

On third-and-12 on Air Froce’s next drive, Marques Evans intercepted a pass, which led to a 7-yard touchdown run by Garbers with 1:19 left in the third. The Falcons’ lead was down to only 28-24.

A third straight drive ended with an interception, this one by Tyric Lebeauf with 7:44 left in the game. This time, the Falcons managed to blow up a screen pass to Van Buren on third-and-five to maintain their precarious lead.

Following a quick three-and-out in which the Falcons had three incomplete passes, Boy-Z State went to work and put together a 15-play, 63-yard drive that consumed 4:24, taking the lead on a 12-yard pass from Garbers to Johnson with 1:47 left. The Broncos converted two fourth downs on the drive before Garbers hit Johnson in the back of the end zone with only two defenders rushing from a Max Zone 4-2-5 defense.

Getting paranoid about throwing interceptions, Larrier took off and scrambled on the first play of the next drive, coughing up the ball for Emmsley’s fumble return touchdown.

Still, Air Force kept plugging away, kicking a field goal on fourth-and-10 with 1:04 left to get within seven points. With three timeouts remaining, the hope was the Falcons would get the ball back, but Stefan Cobbs recovered the onside kick for Boy-Z State.

Van Buren ran for 11 yards on first down, putting the Falcons in a tough position with their timeouts. The Broncos made it a 10-point game by kicking a field goal on fourth-and-inches with 10 seconds remaining.

Larrier had only three interceptions to go with 16 touchdown passes coming into the game.

“There were a few passes early in the game that looked like they should have been intercepted,” B-Dawg said. “We were playing with fire. I should have been thankful for my good luck and not tempted fate so much.”

                Coach needs to be fired.

He has about 75 of those yards on two long runs. I think I wasn’t confident he would get the 4-6 yards consistently to keep moving the chains.

                  2021 SEASON, GAME 8

Back-up running back Joshua Stoner runs for one of his two touchdowns against Army.

                  Not this time!
With another choke job in progress,
Falcons have response to beat Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. — As B-Dawg glanced at the scoreboard and saw that Air Force’s 21-point lead over Army had been reduced to seven, the same nagging thought kept going through his head.

“Oh, no,” he thought. “Not again.”

B-Dawg was still emotionally scarred by Air Force’s loss to Boy-Z State one day earlier in real time and one week earlier in this dynasty in a battle of unbeatens, a game in which the Falcons blew a 28-7 halftime lead.

It seemed to be happening again against Army, prompting some nightmarish flashbacks for B-Dawg’s and all of Falcon Nation.

This time, however, Air Force had a response.

After the Black Knights got within seven points on a 14-yard pass from Ryan Pugh to Kyle Reese with 6:47 left in the third quarter, the 18th-ranked Falcons scored the last 17 points to win going away, 38-14, on Oct. 30, 2021.

“It helped that we were playing Army and not Boy-Z State,” B-Dawg reminded the media. “Big difference.”

One reason the Falcons (7-1) didn’t have a complete meltdown like they had one week earlier was because they hung on to the football. Air Force had four turnovers that resulted in 21 points against Boy-Z State, but had zero against Army.

“That’s Football 101 right thurr,” B-Dawg said. “Protect the rock and the percentages of winning increase dramatically.”

Air Force never panicked and got pass-happy, even though moving the ball on the ground wasn’t easy. No. 1 halfback Trey Taylor ran 27 times for 87 yards and three touchdowns. Backup halfback Joshua Stoner had more success in terms of yards per carry, running 10 times for 67 yards and two scores. Quarterback Zachary Larrier wasn’t a factor on the ground, running only six times for seven yards, but he moved the ball through the air efficiently by going 16-for-19 for 175 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions.

Larrier was 6-for-6 on a game-opening drive in which Air Force went 74 yards in 16 plays, taking the first 6:06 off the clock, before Taylor scored on a 1-yard run.

“Those are the kind of drives I dream about,” B-Dawg said. “You can have your quick-strike attack; give me one of those all-day drives that slowly drain the life out of the defense.”

Air Force led 21-0 late in the first half and figured to take that lead into the break, given Army’s struggles moving the ball. But the Black Knights, dead-last nationally in passing yards at 92.9 per game, quickly moved the ball through the air, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Donnell Diego with 39 seconds left in the first half.

Army continued to have success through the air on the first drive of the second half, as Reese caught a touchdown pass in the back of the end zone against a 4-2-5 Max Zone to cap a seven-play, 79-yard drive.

Air Force needed desperately to stop the bleeding. A 32-yard pass to Hunter Williams was the key play on an 11-play, 66-yard touchdown drive that extended the Falcons’ lead to 28-14 entering the fourth quarter.

An Auston Deason interception on Army’s next drive led to a 41-yard David Chapeau field goal, giving Air Force a 31-14 lead with 8:34 left in the game.

A 7-yard run by Taylor with 5:44 left capped the scoring.

Army was the No. 2 rushing offense in the nation coming into the game, averaging 279.0 yards per contest, while the Falcons were first in defending the run at 67.3 yards. Defense won out, as Army had only 57 yards on 30 carries.

Air Force is now 4-0 against Army and 8-0 against the military academies in this dynasty.

Good bounceback win over Army after the Boise loss. How far was the talent gap between you and the Broncos at this point of the dynasty? Because it's definitely dwindling as far as I can see, and maybe where you're at in real time you've surpassed them? (Obviously don't have to give that info away, I'm just curious!)

Of course, I'll forget what worked and find a way to screw up another game down the road by panicking and abandoning the running game.

The gap is still huge. They are 86 OVR and my team is 79 OVR this season. The gap will begin to narrow a bit next year (2022) - they will be 84 OVR and I'll still be 79 OVR. Their advantage tightens up to 84-81 in 2023. I'm just setting up the 2024 season now, so I'm not sure where our teams are, but it seems we are SLOWLY moving up and they are SLOWLY coming back to the pack. I don't think they're even the highest-rated team in the Mountain West by 2023. I try to put the team ratings on my schedule every year to give everyone an indication about the caliber of each team.

                          2021 HEISMAN UPDATE/AWARDS SEMIFINALISTS

Trey Taylor is Air Force’s first Heisman candidate in B-Dawg’s four seasons.

Taylor first Falcon to make Heisman list

Kirk Herbstreit hinted at something B-Dawg never suspected during the telecast of the Air Force-Army football game last Saturday.

Junior running back Trey Taylor is an honest-to-goodness Heisman Trophy candidate.

For the first time in B-Dawg’s four seasons at Air Force, the Falcons have a player on the Heisman watch list. Taylor checks in at No. 5 on the current list.

“I heard that Heisman mentioned something about Taylor being a Heisman candidate,” B-Dawg said. “It never crossed my mind that he could be in that discussion. Lo and behold, he is. I know it’s been mentioned locally a little bit, but this is the first time the ‘H’ word has been used nationally on connection with Trey. This could change the way I call plays the rest of the season, being the stat hoe and awards hoe that I am.”

Taylor has 182 carries for 835 yards and 15 touchdowns, while catching 32 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns.

He also showed up on the list of awards semifinalists for three awards, ranking third for the Walker Award, fourth for the Walter Camp and 12th for the Maxwell Award.

after rallying from 17 down in fourth

SAN JOSE, Calif. — When David Chapeau’s game-tying field goal split the uprights, there was a mass celebration on the Air Force sideline.

After trailing San Jose State by 17 points in the fourth quarter, the Falcons had battled back to make it a new ball game.

But in the midst of the jubilation, coach B-Dawg was haunted by this thought: Did the Falcons leave the Spartans too much time?

The answer, to his everlasting regret, was “yes.”

An offense that has lit up the scoreboard against Air Force the past two seasons had no trouble moving into range for Brian Bowser’s 53-yard game-winning field goal with two seconds left in San Jose State’s 40-37 upset of the 15th-ranked Falcons on Nov. 6, 2021.

A 9-yard catch by Joe Watkins on the previous play got the Spartans in position for the kick, which barely cleared the crossbar.

“I never feel comfortable against these guys,” B-Dawg said. “I was petrified that they could move the ball about 40 yards in less than 28 seconds.”

Air Force had to kick the field goal with 28 seconds left because Brandon Lewis gained only 1-yard on a catch on third-and-four on the previous play.

“You have to know where the sticks are,” B-Dawg said. “If we get that first down, this game at least goes to overtime, and maybe we get the touchdown.”

With two seconds left and the ball at their own 25-yard line, the Falcons had one chance for a miracle. That miracle never had a chance, as Jermaine Swan sacked Zachary Larrier, who was waiting for Hunter Williams to get deep.

                            Bye-bye, Heisman?

Air Force junior running back Trey Taylor made the Heisman watch list this week for the first time. He may fall from the list after gaining only 62 yards on 22 carries, although his two short touchdown runs and four catches for 67 yards might keep him in the discussion.

Taylor has gotten fat running “strong stretch,” a run that is highly effective if the opposing defense is in man coverage, leaving one side pretty much open.

San Jose State played zone defense most of the game, covering the outside edge and ruining B-Dawg’s visions of a monster game for Taylor. The Spartans came into the game ranked 117th out of 126 teams in rushing defense, allowing 221.8 yards per game on the ground.

“Another classic case of how teams match up in sims versus how they match up when you actually play them,” B-Dawg said. “It’s as if they actually scouted us.”

Demonte Meeks forces a fumble with a sack of Terrell Carter.

                            More big numbers for Carter

San Jose quarterback Terrell Carter, an 81 OVR fifth-year senior, has put up gigantic numbers against Air Force the last two seasons.

He was 27-for-35 for 414 yards and one touchdown on Saturday. In two career games against the Falcons, Carter is 71-for-89 for 948 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions.

Air Force won a 55-45 shootout with San Jose State last season.
