    2039 BOISE STATE MEDIA GUIDE

    CONE MOVES TO RB

Last year Boise State found success moving former QB Jhurell Merling to TE and he produced 57 rec for 823 yds and 6 TD.

With George West returning for his Senior Season and a shot at Three-Peat Heisman campaign, Coach Scott decided to roll the dice and try it again as he moves RS JR Wayne Cone (77 Ovr) to RB (81 Ovr). Cone listed at 6'3 218 lbs is a former 3* Athlete from Pearland Texas.

BRONCOS CUT 10 AFTER SPRING GAME!!

Boise State went into the Spring game needing to trim off 7 players to get down to 85 before Week 1 but Coach Scott ended up with 10 players joining the late transfer portal as BSU will start the season with 82 players..

RS FR QB Clay Skaggs (75)
RS SO RB/QB Lamar Mount (76)
RS SR TE Ray Wilkins (70)
RS FR C Enrique Valdez (75)
RS FR RT Frank McMahon (67)
RS FR DE Nathan Kimrin (73)
RS SO OLB Lyle Hurtado (77)
RS FR CB Ryan Bitonio (71)
RS FR CB Denzel Addai (72)
    RS SR Matt Pena (78)

The Breakdown of the roster is 17 Seniors, 21 Juniors, 7 Sophomores and 37 Freshman (Redshirt/True).

With that said, Coach Scott will look to build a class of 20 players in the upcoming recruiting class.

BOISE STATE STARTS #6 IN TOP-25 PRE-SEASON POLL

Despite a 14-2 record and a trip to the Semi-Finals, BSU finds itself starting the year out at #6 with 4 Big-12 Teams ranked ahead of them to start the year including Defending Championship Texas Tech who once again starts the year #1.

    (Overall/Offense/Defense)

    #1 Texas Tech (89/89/90)
    #2 Oklahoma (90/90/90)
    #3 Miami (91/91/91)

    #5 Nebraska (86/87/86)
    #6 Boise State (91/91/91)
    #7 Maryland (81/81/82)
    #8 Michigan (90/90/90)
    #9 Penn State (89/89/90)
    #10 Ohio State (91/90/92)
    #11 Arkansas (88/86/90)
    #12 Georgia (90/90/90)
    #13 Cal (86/86/87)
    #14 Appalachian State (82/84/82)
    #15 Syracuse (84/84/84)
    #16 Georgia Tech (81/81/81)
    #17 UNC (84/84/85)
    #18 Houston (82/82/82)
    #19 Clemson (86/84/89)
    #20 Oregon (90/90/91)
    #21 Texas State (83/82/84)
    #22 Notre Dame (86/86/86)
    #23 Louisville (85/84/86)
    #24 NC State (84/85/84)
    #25 Indiana (82/81/84)

    THE SCHEDULE

Boise State' schedule looks a bit different this season.. BSU will open up the the season in Week 1 with a road trip to Nebraska to face the #5 ranked Cornhuskers and Coach McCardell (TTU's former DC).

Boise State will then have a Week 2 "Bye" before starting Pac-12 play in Week 3 @ Arizona State, before finishing up Non-Conference play on "The Blue" with a Week 4 matchup vs Ole Miss followed by a Week 5 matchup vs #12 Georgia.

BSU will then return to Pac-12 play in Week 6 starting with a road trip to Eugene to face the #20 ranked Ducks followed by BYU in Week 7 in Provo.

The Broncos will actually only play 2 games at home this season in Pac-12 play Week 8 vs #13 Cal followed by a road trip to Oregon State in Week 9 and Week 10 vs Arizona "Senior Day"

BSU will finish it's season with 3 straight road games

    Week 11 @ Fresno State
    Week 12 @ Washington State
    Week 13 @ Utah.

    Coach Scott
"I don't know that the Pac-12 Commish was thinking but it seems very odd that the Defending Conference Champions only get 2 home games and 7 road games.. It makes late season recruiting very difficult when everyone else in your conference can invite Recruits for home games and you can't"

      QUARTERBACK

2 time Heisman Winner and reigning Player of the Year George West returns for his Senior season with 1 thing on his mind. Win a National Championship... West broke the BSU and Pac-12 record for most TD's in a season with 53 well throwing for 4681 yds with 13 INT. West is 3200 yds shy of beating Malachi Nelson's record of 15628 yds in a career and 34 TD's shy of beating Nelson's career mark.

RS JR Morgan Forsett won the backup job this spring with Cone moving to RB, but if West was to get hurt long term, BSU could turn to 5* Recruit Salesi Battle who will start the year Redshirting..

      RUNNING BACK

Coach Scott will need to replace 1000 yd rusher Leati Hart.. West returns as the teams leading rusher after Hart but both Larry Wade (233 carries 859 yds 9 TD) and Anthony Perez (167 carries 628 yds 8 TD) have some experience running the ball. Perez had a great spring and appears ready to take charge as RB1 after spending the bulk of his time on Kickoff and Punt Returns last season (48 KR 1322 yds, 72 PR 725 yds). FB Earl Pitts will continue to work in some short yardage goal line carries as well.

      WIDE RECEIVER

Boise State will need to find someone to replace Maurice Long's 89 receptions (school record) and 1400 yds and (26 TD's, also school record). Enter Transfer Damion Brutus. Brutus may only by 5'9 but he knows how to catch a football. Brutus started his career in Kentucky (49 rec 678 yds 1 TD) then left for Michigan State where he played the last 2 seasons combining for 82 rec for 1536 yds and 20 TD's.

BSU will also have to replace #1 WR DJ Chick who left a year early for a NFL contract (1st round pick). That falls on the shoulders of Larry Silatolu who as the #2 last year had 73 rec for 1116 yds and 10 TD following a 2037 season in which he posted 66 rec for 1146 yds and 19 TD's.

Right now TE Jhurell Merling (57 rec 823 yds 6 TD) is the next most experienced pass catcher. but the Coaches love both RS FR Eric Nicholson and Jamerson Gedeon and it should be noted that 5* FR Tyron Combs is one of the only players from the incoming class not to get hit with the Redshirt tag.

      Coach Scott
" As of now the plan is Silatolua as the #1, Nicholson and Gedeon trading off as the #2/#5 with Brutus playing the #3/Slot and Combs locked in as our #4, but I could also see him push for the #2 spot as well.

We obviously will still be using Merling as much if not more in the passing game as we did last year, but I would also love to get Soma Tuaolo more looks as TE2"

      O-LINE

Keenan Tompkins shifts from RT to LT to protect West's Blindside and looks to improve his NFL Draft stock. The 0-Line will start 3 Seniors and have 3 more as key backups, leaving Coach Scott some work to do come recruiting time.

      D-LINE

Despite missing 5 weeks last year with a injury, Dee Gallo managed to finish the season with 10 sacks, but after him the next person up was OLB Frank Ruegamer who had 4.

5* DE Tye Uche is currently listed as Redshirting leaving RS JR Brock James as the starter opposite Gallo with Brock Hurley returning as the teams starting DT.

      LINEBACKERS

Ruegamer returns as 1 of the starting OLB, with Jamie Grimes moving form OLB to MLB opening the door for either Juwan Canty to start or former USC transfer Ben Body, as 5* and #1 Overall Recruit Eric Fleming is currently listed as a Redshirt.

      Coach Scott
"With Ruegamer and Canty both Senior and adding Body for depth, we thought it was best to save Fleming a year as a backup so we can hopefully get a full 4 years out of him as a starter."
      DEFENSIVE BACKS

Landing both Kenan Vaughn and Reggie Abel in the transfer portal is huge. Both come in as instant starters allowing SR George Graves (60 Tackles, 2 INT, 7 Pass Deflections) to slide into the slot role

Mike Semple saw plenty of action last year as a key backup as FS/SS (44 tackles) but he will need to figure out a way to make some plays (0 INT and only 3 Deflections) if he is going to hold off 4* Recruits Heath Childress and Damian Torrence.

      SPECIAL TEAMS

Patrick Ybbara had a great year making 21/24 FG's with all 3 miss's coming on 50+. He was also a perfect 66/66 on XPT.

Oscar Quintana punted 50 times last season for 2209 yds (44.2 avg, 38.4 net) with 9 punts inside the 20 and a long of 63 yds.

Man TTU laying the wood to get revenge on their former coach.

you've got a solid class and a great team, I'm sure you guys will be back next year!

weird with the scheduling for conference games, never seen that happen before .I have had the weird 5 game road trips, but they always balanced on the back end

Well TTU's roster is still loaded despite losing 33 players from when Coach Scott left and 17 more again after this Natty, they still started the year #1 but with only the #19 Overall Class, I am sure at some point someone will take over at some point. I am in year 16, so I got 14 more chances.

I didn't land anyone at RB so will be interesting to see if I can get anything out of Cone. I used Perez and Gash as Kick Returners and both offer a little more speed then I had last year with Hart.

The schedule thing sucks. I like the normal setup of playing my non-conference games before Week 4 and then conference games being balanced home and away. Seems weird to have Senior Day in Week 10.

BRONCOS OPEN SEASON WITH A WIN!!

            GAME RECAP

Nebraska opened up the game scoring a touchdown on the opening drive as SO QB Ross Fogg (88) delivers a 19 yd TD to SO WR Taylor Hockenson (81) to take a (7-0) lead, but Boise State would score 16 unanswered as West finds Michigan State transfer Damion Brutus for his first Bronco touchdown (51 yds) to tie the game and then it was Patrick Ybarra drilling 3 straight FG's to make it (16-7) with under a minute to play in the half.. A 40 yd pass from Fogg would set up a Husker FG to bring the 1st half to a close (16-10)

BSU opened up the 2nd half with Ybarra's 4th FG of the day to make it (19-10) before Fogg would throw his 2nd TD of the game finding Hockenson again for the score to make things (19-17). The Broncos would again settle for a short FG to make things (22-17) heading to the 4th.

Nebraska would turn the ball over twice in the 4th as Fogg throws a INT as FS Manny Heurtelou comes up with the pick setting up a West to Brutus TD to make it (29-17) With under 2 minutes to play in the game RB Brad Foss would fumble the ball leading to BSU taking over inside the 30 and 2 plays later it was Anthony Perez breaking off a 25 yd run to the house...

BALANCE ATTACK LEADS BRONCOS TO VICTORY!!

              GAME RECAP

Arizona State opened the game with a 8 play drive that ended with a TD pass from SR QB Larry Holiday (89) to SO WR Antwuan Dogg (85) to make it (7-0) but Boise State would score twice in the opening quarter as George West connects on TD's of 27 yds (D. Brutus) and 11 yds (L. Wade) to make it (14-7) at the end of the 1st Quarter.

A Holiday INT (picked off by K. Vaughn) would lead to Wade's 2nd TD of the game as the Senior RB takes it 23 yds to the house to make it (21-7) midway through the 2nd Quarter. The Sun Devils would add a late FG to make it (21-10) at the half.

BSU opened up the 2nd half with the ball but needed just 1 play as West hit's SR WR Larry Silatolu on a 78 yd bomb to make it (27-10). Leading by 17, BSU went ahead and left the offense on the field and converted the 2pt play to make it (29-10)

Arizona State would answer back with back to back scores as Holiday bounces back from his early INT to hit Dogg for TD #2 and then after a West INT, the duo would hook up for a 3rd time to make it (29-22) after back to back failed 2pt plays.

BSU would open up the 4th Quarter scoring on a 21 yd TD run by Anthony Perez to make it (36-22). Arizona State struggling to run the ball all day (46 yds) would add turn to JR RB Kenan Simonson 3 times inside the 5 and he finally delivers a 3 yd run to make it (36-29) midway through the 4th.

BSU sticking with their own ground game that was working (100+) yds caps off a 11 play drive with their 3rd rushing TD of the day as Dalton Gash takes the short yardage TD (2 yds) for the final score the game.

*ASU threw a INT at the end of the game to OLB F. Ruegamer*.

BRONCO'S RALLY WITH 4TH QUARTER SCORE TO STAY PERFECT!!!

                  GAME RECAP

Boise State jumped out to a early (10-0) lead in the 1st half and led (20-13) at the end of the 1st half as George West connects on a pair of touchdowns through the air including a 51 yd TD to True Freshman Tyron Combs.

BSU would extend their lead as West throws 2 more TD's in the 3rd Quarter as BSU goes into the 4th up (34-23)..

Georgia opened up the 4th Quarter scoring a touchdown as SR QB Ogugua Ajala (88) throws his 3rd TD of the game hitting JR WR Terrance Atwell (84) to make it (34-29). The Bulldogs would leave the offense on the field to try for the 2pt conversion and cut it to a FG lead, but the Bronco "D" steps up forcing the incomplete pass.

A West INT however gives Georgia the ball right back, and Ajala and Atwell hook up again as Georgia takes a (35-34) lead. Again the Bulldogs leave the offense out trying to make it a FG lead but again the Broncos stop them short.

Trailing by 1, West would recover from his earlier INT and lead the Broncos on a 13 play drive that ends with West's 5th TD of the day as he finds TE Jhurell Merling on a 6 yd slant on 3rd and Goal to give BSU the 5 point lead. Coach Scott would leave the offense on the field and West would keep it himself as he gives in for the 2pt play to make it a touchdown lead.

Georgia would get the ball back with 1:39 to play but out of timeouts, The Bulldogs turn the ball over on downs as BSU pull off the victory and extends their home winning streak to 10.

Boise State will travel to Eugene to take on the #20 ranked Oregon Ducks. I forgot to mention it at the end of the season Oregon fired Dan Lanning (He got hired by Florida State).

I am unsure who their new HC really is but his CPU name is Rafael Swenson and he has a Overall record of (122-76) with a 9-5 record in Bowl games. Lanning was (160-49) and had led the Ducks to the Playoffs in 14 of the 16 years of the Dynasty.

                    BRONCOS FALL IN OVERTIME!!!

Oregon started the year 0-2 under their new Head Coach, but then went on to win 3 straight in Pac-12 play to come into the game ranked #20 with a (3-2) record Overall and a 3-0 record in the Pac-12. Well they made it 4-0 as the Ducks hand BSU their first loss of the season.

                    GAME RECAP

Oregon lead (7-3) at the end of the 1st Quarter and (10-6) at halftime as the Ducks Defense shuts down West and the Broncos passing attack.

Oregon would extend their lead to (17-6) on the opening drive of the 2nd half as JR QB Garrett Matakevich (83) hits SO WR Quincy Dunbar (86) for his 2nd TD of the day on a 43 yd strike.

BSU continued to struggle moving the ball but comes up with a huge play on Special teams, as SR Punter Oscar Quintana hits a 59 yd punt that is downed at the 2 yd line. The Bronco "D" then comes up with a Safety on Matakevich to make it (17-8) BSU would then make it a 2 pt game as West finally hits Brutus for a 27 yd TD to make it (17-14). BSU would hit the XPT to make it (17-15)..

Matakevhich however wasn't done as he hits All-American (JR) Ceaar Ghee (94 Ovr) on a 24 yd touchdown to make it (23-15). The Ducks would leave the offense on the field tryiing to make it a 10 pt lead but the play backfires as BSU stops Oregon in the backfield.

Now only trailing by 8 points, West leads the Bronco offense down the field for a 12 play drive that ends with former QB Wayne Cone scoring his first rushing TD of the season as he dives in from 1 yd out. to make it (23-21). Now it was BSU leaving the offense on the field as the Broncos look to tie the game, and West delivers hitting Combs on a slant to tie the game (23-23).

Oregon had a chance to win it in regulation but turned the ball over on downs. West had 1 shot to try and win it too but his pass is knocked down as the game goes to OT.

Oregon won the toss and elects to play "D" holding BSU to a FG on the opening drive of Overtime to make it (26-23), but the BSU "D" is unable to stop Matakevich as he throws TD #4 hittingSR T. Trahan (80) on a 20 yd strike to win the game..

BRONCOS BOUNCE BACK WITH BIG ROAD WIN!!

After their worst offensive outing of the season Boise State bounces back to have one of their best as they pick up a much needed road win over the (5-1) Cougars.

Boise State played a solid game on both sides of the ball with 545 yds of Total Offense including 156 yds and 2 scores on the ground well holding BYU to just 204 yards of Offense and just 24 yds on the ground.

BYU would mange to take the goose egg off the scoreboard midway through the 4th Quarter as SR Orlando Ogletree (81) hits SO TE Devante Pile (77) for a 3 yd score.

Ogletree (CDA ID) and Pile (Meridian ID) are both Idaho natives

Boise State wasn't done scoring though as RB Dalton Gash breaks off his longest run of the season/career with a 33 yd TD run late in the 4th.

BSU moves up 2 spots to #8 in the Rankings.

The Broncos lose RB Anthony Perez and DE's Dee Gallo and Lee Damico.

Perez (84 carreis 330 yds 2 TD) season is likely over as he is expected to miss the next 12 weeks with a Broken Tailbone.

Gallo will miss the next 4 weeks with a Dislocated Hip well Damico will miss the next 6-8 weeks with a Ruptured Disk.

                      Coach Scott
"Right now the plan is RB by committee. We want to get Cone more looks but Gash will also see more carries as well. Larry Wade will continue his work as a 3rd done specialist but he took could see more carries on 1st and 2nd down as well"

The Bears opened up their Pac-12 play with a (38-24) loss to Oregon, but have gone on to beat USC, Fresno State, and Washington as they come into the game (3-1) in Pac-12 play.

WITH ONLY 2 HOME GAMES LEFT BSU INVITES SEVERAL TO GAME DAY VISIT

BSU will have 4 more 5* Recruits visiting Boise Stat this week including the #1 Player in the country.

5* Dexter Smelter (#1 Overall/#1 MS/#1 ATH) is a 6'3 198 lb Athlete from Yazoo City MS. Smelter could play both sides of the ball but is most likely going to make the most impact at WR. Smelter has slot WR written all over him and with his 97 speed he could very easily be the next Bronco star WR.

5* Nelson Metz (#10 Overall/#1 IL/#3 WR) is listed at 6'5 219 lbs from Chicago IL. With BSU's Top-2 targets both set to graduate Metz could easily slip in right next to Tyron Combs and start for the next 4 years.

5* OLB Karl Stock (#11 Overall/#1 UT/#2 OLB). Listed at 6'4 243 lbs from Salt Lake UT, Stock could join Eric Fleming (#1 Overall) from last year's class giving BSU a great OLB tandem for the next 4 years.

5* FS Conner Doss (#17 Overall/#1 CO/#1 FS). Listed at 62 199 lbs Doss from Broomfield CO, Doss would be a huge addition just in the fact it would keep him away from Nebraska and K-State his currently #2/#3 schools.

                      Coach Scott
"I free really good about all of these guy's signing here..Well they all have multiple offers, so far all 5 players have us listed #1 and I think a big win over Cal will just be the icing on the cake to convince them that Boise State is the place to play if they want to compete for National Championships and be molded into future NFL stars."

BRONCOS MAKE IT 11 IN A ROW!!

Boise State extends their home win streak to 11 as they improve to 3-1 in Pac-12 play and (6-1) Overalldefeating the Cal Bears in a Top-25 Battle.

                            GAME RECAP

Cal jumped out to a early (10-0) lead but Boise State scores 42 unanswered as Coach Scott improves to 3-0 against the Bears since he return to Boise.

The Broncos dominated both sides of the ball creating 2 turnovers via INT's and creating 2 more turnovers on downs well holding Cal to just 3-10 on 3rd Downs despites the Bears rushing for 144 yds on the day.

George West continues his strong season as the SR QB looks to secure his 3rd straight Heisman as the throw 5 TD's on the day including 4 to former Michigan State transfer Damion Brutus. For Brutus he now has 12 TD's in the Broncos's first 7 games making some wonder if he is going to challenge Maurice Long's single season record of 26 set just last season.

Brutus listed at just 5'9 and 187lbs has been the Broncos #1 WR this season leading the team in receptions, yards and touchdowns.

BSU moves up 2 spots to #6 in the Top-25 rankings with the win. They will travel to Oregon State to take on the (3-5) Beavers. OSU is just 1-4 though in Pac-12 play including coming off a (49-33) loss to Arizona State in Week 8.

some of the moves seem pretty sudden, but its also tied to their goals. If their goal is to make the playoff and they fall short two seasons in a row, they usually end up on the hot seat.

West has been on FIRE for you guys, another Heisman incoming?
