                43 yr Old Retires

After 22 years of service and 4 Stanley Cups, Recchi calls it quits

Panther fans and alike will be sad today as 4 time Stanley Cup Champion veteran Mark Recchi hangs up his skates for the last time.

Entering the NHL in 1989 as a Penguin, the RW has played for 11 teams (Pens, Flyers, Habs, Flyers, Pens Huricanes, Pens, Thrashers, Lightning, Bruins, and Panthers) and has accumulated over 1,518 pts (580 goals, 938 assists) in 1,652 games.

For the last two years he has played for the Panthers on the 2nd line accumulating 76 pts (35 goals, 41 assists) in 162 games. His experience and pose was instrumental in bring not just 1 but 2 Stanley Cups to sunny Florida and his 22 years of experience have really helped fashion some of the younger guys on the team, Thompson and Smith.

From the Panthers organization and fans, I would like to congratuate Mark Recchi for all his hard work to the team and the league in general. Good luck and I hope you have a great retirement.

                  Draft Day 2011/2012

After winning the Cup, Panthers have the last pick

With another year in the books, draft day 2011/2012 begins. The Panthers have the 30th, 37th (Acquired from Colorado), 56th (Acquired from Colorado), 60th, 90th, 120th, and 150th picks. Word on the street is that the Panthers will be focusing on forwards and D-men this year.

This is how the draft played out:

                  1st Round:
30th pick - Michail Babchuk, 5'10" 173lbs LW from Lithuania

Right before the 2nd round, Panthers annouced a trade.

                  Panthers Send:
                  D-man M. Bergeron
                  Colorado Send:
                  D-man C. Sarich

The Panthers get another DD with Sarich, who had 175 pims and 23 pts in 82 games last year. While the Avs get OD Bergeron, who had 34 pts but a -12 in 82 games. This might look like a bad call for the Panthers, but it was decided that more then 1 OD (Smith) was to much and that Bergeron (who didn't live up to his PP expectations with only 3 pp goals last year) had to go.

                  2nd Round:
37th pick (Traded from Colorado) - Tomas Renberg, 6'3" 213lbs D-man from Sweden

56th pick (Traded from Colorado) - Emmanuel Plante, 6'0" 209lbs RW from Canada

60th pick - Gabriel Goren, 6'0" 214lbs RW from Canada

Once again, the Panthers annouced a trade

                  Panthers Send:
                  D-man A. Babchuk
                  Penguins Send:
                  D-man N. Grossman

The Panthers get rid of an aging D-man and pick up a younger one. Grossman had 58 pims and 21pts in 82 games with the Pens while Babchuk had 31 pims and 27pts in 82 games. Basically a player switch but with youth in mind.

                  3rd Round:
90th pick - Mirk Parros, 6'1" 186lbs RW from Canada

                  4th Round:
                  120th pick - Dustin Minard, 6'1" 190lbs D from Denmark

                  5th Round:
                  150th pick - Alexander Ulanov, 6'1" 180lbs C from Ukraine

7 new players to consider for entry level contract, possible 4 of them on the radar for Rochester.

                    UFA 2011/2012

Unlike last year, Panthers remained Silent

Unlike previous years, the Panthers remained silent on the UFA front. Yes they did sign some draftees and resigned others but in the end the Panthers did not bring in any new talent. The focus was internal.

Asked why the sudden change in tatics, Panthers management commented that they were happy with the current team and that if a hole developed during the season they would make a move then.

This is how the UFA season played out for the Panthers.

                    Resignings:

Alexander Salak (G) signed a 1 year deal. (Its is rumored that Salak will be resigned to Rochester this year, as his last years play did not impress)

Michael Folik (C) signed a 4 year deal.

                    Shawn Matthias (C) signed a 5yr deal.

Keaton Ellerby (D) signed a 3 yr deal.

Out of the 4 resignings 2 of them will stay with the Panthers, Matthias and Folik, while Salak and Ellerby will dress for Rochester.

                    Entry Level:

Michail Babchuk (LW), 30th pick, signed a 3yr deal (low 70s)

                    Tomas Renberg (D/LW), 37th pick, signed a 3yr deal (low 70s)

Emmanuel Plante (RW), 56th pick, signed a 3yr deal (low 70s)

                    Dustin Minard (D), 120th pick, signed a 3yr deal (low 70s)

Out of the 7 picks the Panthers had this season, they signed 4 of them. All 4 will dress for Rochester this year.

                      2011 - 2012 Outlook

Well put another perfect season in the record books as the Panthers completed another championship season. Edging shy of the 62 win mark held by the Wings, the Panthers finished last year with a franchise record of 59-14-4 for 122 pts and secured thier 1st Presidents trophy. Advancing through the 2010/2011 playoffs they beat the Canucks to win thier 2nd Stanley Cup in as many years. Lead by Thompson, who had 165 pts last year, and Russian Goalie Fedorov, who had 43 wins last year, it looks like no one can stand in thier way. Hopefully another perfect season is in the books.

This offseason the Panthers remained pretty quite compared to past years.

In the draft, which the Panthers had 7 picks (30th, 37th, 56th, 60th, 90th, 120th, and 150th) they selected 3 RW, 2 D, 1 C, and 1 LW. And of those 7 picks they signed 4 of them. LW Michail Babchuk, D Tomas Renberg, RW Emmanuel Plante, and D Dustin Minard, all of which will be playing this year for the Baby Panthers.

Of those 7, highly scouted Lithuania LW Michail Babchuk and Canadian RW Emmanuel Plante will be in the spot light. Both of these fast, puck moving forwards will be instant successes on Rochester and will definately be perfect fits for future offense for the Panthers.

On the trade front the Panthers moved a couple of players on and off the team. Starting with unproductive PP OD d-man M. Bergeron (82g, 4-30-34pts, -12, 54 pims - signed last year during UFA). The Panthers traded him to Colorado for DD d-man C. Sarich (82g, 5-15-23pts, +15, 175 pims). Next they traded A. Babchuk (82g, 8-19-27pts, +12, 31pims - was traded to the Panthers during the 2010/2011 draft) to the Penguins and got N. Grossmann (82g, 1-20-21pts, -5, 59 pims). Might look like a few weird moves but in the end the Panthers beefed up an already "Steam Roller" blue line.

On the resigning front the Panthers let Brashear walk away (no suprise there) and resigned 4 players. Singing Frolik (C), Matthias (C - definately rookie of the year for the Panthers), and Ellerby (D) to multi-year contracts and Salak (G) to a 1 year contract. The Panthers had to walk a fine line as next year will be a huge year in the contract department; Thompson-Smith-Fedorov are all on contract years.

Hopefully the team you see right now will be the team that wins number 3. This could be the prefect dynasty of the century.

                      Key Additions: C. Sarich (D), N. Grossmann (D), M. Babchuk (LW), T. Renberg (D/W), E. Plante (RW), D. Minard (D/W)

                        Run Down:

The Panthers openned up the 2011/2012 season with a bang. Going 11-2 in the first 13 games of the season, not as good as last years 12-1 but definately a sure sign that the Two time Stanley Cup Champions are not suffering from a Cup hangover.

Thompson, the Canadian Superstar, has started this season like last year, on a roll. Contributing 19 goals and 14 assists for 33 points in 13 games, he is averaging just over 2.54pts/game. Linemates Lukes and Booth are also having great starts with 17 and 15 points respectively. Panther draft pick Backer, selected in the 2010/2011 draft, has started his NHL debut with 3 goals and 2 assists and is 3rd in the NHL for rookies. 2nd year Matthias is 4th in Panther scoring with 13 points.

Toughman Belak, up to his usual antics, leads the league with 60 penalty minutes, averaging 4.61pims/game.

Panther D-man are also lighting it up, with 3 of them in the top 10 Panther scorers. Hannan, Sarich, and Smith have 13,10,6 points respectively.

Fedorov has also started the 2011/2012 with great numbers, posting a 10-1 record with a GAA of 2.00. Goalie Tandem Fedorov and Plante are 1st in the league with a GA of 27 or 2.07 GAA.

                        Team Notes/Events:

                        Belak (Oct 29 2011 - broken nose):
During a recent tousel, Belak suffered a broken nose. Listed as not a major injury, the toughman will have to wear a face protector until Nov 7th.

                        Reinprecht (Nov 1 2011 - sore shoulder):
Taking the full force of a Luke Schenn hit, the RW will not miss anytime but will play reduced minutes as he tries and recovers from a sore shoulder - possible Nov 8th

Thanks Axeshun. I know, he's a beast. In year 3 he's rated 96. When I first stared he was rated 92, while Smith was rated 82 (now 90) and Fedorov was rated 82 (now 86).

I'm loving this chise. I hope Thompson can hit the 215+ mark this season.

Just the fact that there is hope for 200 points is crazy, lol.

I wish I had someone that beastly on my Caps team, the only guy who comes close is Backstrom, who is rated 90 overall thus far.
