Panthers are 34-17-8 with 76 pts, are 4th in the East
GF: 207 (2nd) GA: 159 (2nd - PHI with 158) PP: 16.6% (9th)
PK: 84.5% (17th)
Top 5 Scores:
Thompson 43-57-100
Booth 20-40-60
Lukes 23-34-57
Koistinen 9-45-54
Smith 15-32-47
Playing almost 600 hockey, hovering around the 4th place in the East is not bad, all things considered. Yes the Panthers have lost some ground over the last 17 games (10 and 7) dropping from 1st to 4th, but this is an immense improvement over last year. A playoff berth is almost gaurenteed for these guys and if Thompson keeps playing the way he is a whole case full of hardware is expected.
Thompson, a 1st round pick this year, is on top of the league with 100 pts, if he keeps up this pace he could take the crown from Selanne for the most points in a season by a rookie (Selanne at 132 pts). His linemates Booth and Lukes (fans have nicked named this line the BLT) are also having great seasons (60 and 57 pts respectively) and are on pace for 80+ seasons, both best in thier careers.
The Smith-Koistinen line (remember Koistinen was a 5th/6th string defensemen last year, and Smith was a 2nd round pick this year) have amassed over 101 pts combined, with many of them coming from the PP. This dynamic duo has been on fire and an excellent compliment to the top line. Two other defencemen worthy of mention are McCabe (on the 2nd D-line with Allen) and Leopold (on the 3rd D-line with Seidenberg) who are both on par to amass over 30pts this season.
Goaltender tendum Clemmensen (A back up most of his career) and Fedorov (3rd round pick from Russia this year) are 2nd in the league with a GA of 159 (PHI has a GA of 158), and are prefect contenders for the William M Jennings Award. Not to shabby for a pair of goalies listed as mediocer at the beginning of the season by TSN.
Only 3 games left before the Trade Deadline, with a 2 week Olympic break in the middle. Will Panthers make a move or will they sit be the sideline. Its noted that McCabe, Stillman, and Reinprecht are on the block but Panthers management has annouced that other then thier first line (offense and defense) and goalie Fedorov, any one is available. Should be an interest time.
GO Panthers, GO.
Will do a brief trade dealine recap.Comment

8 Game Recap:
(Games 59 to 67)
VS VAN: 5-4 W
VS BOS: 4-2 W
AT ATL: 4-2 L
AT PHI: 4-0 L
VS COL: 6-0 W
AT MTL: 3-2 L
AT SJ: 3-1 W
Panthers are 38-20-9 with 81 pts, are 4th in the East but continue to battle for 1st with Washington
GF: 321 (3rd) GA: 181 (2nd) PP: 15.1% (12th) PK: 83.5% (25th)
Top 5 Scores:
Thompson 50-64-114
Booth 23-45-68
Lukes 27-41-68
Koistinen 9-49-58
Smith 16-39-55
Clemmensen 17-15 2.49GAA
Fedorov 21-14 2.76GAA
4-4 in the last 8 games is nothing to talk about. Yes the Panthers continue to battle for 1st place with Washington but to secure that spot they will need more wins.
With the trade deadline over and without a move, the Panthers will have to focus inwards to find the strength to continue. Things that definately need to be improved are the PP and PK. Maybe some line switching will be in order, or a call up. Time will tell.
The BLT line keeps riping it up, accumulating over 250 pts so far with 43% of the goals scored for the team. If this line can keep hot, watch out everyone.
Another worthy mention is that in the top 10 pts leaders for the Panthers, 4 of them are defencemen, Koistinen-Thompson-McCabe (really has brought up his A game)-Leopold, with Koistinen leading all defencemen in the league with 58 pts (Smith is in 2nd with 55). Hopefully some of this success will splash into the PP, we can only hope.
The Panthers Goaltender tandum is still in the running for the Williams award, hopefuly they can also keep it up.Comment

7 Game Recap:
(Games 68 to 74)
VS CAP: 6-5 W
VS PHX: 7-0 W
VS BOS: 2-1 W
VS TB: 7-1 W
AT TOR: 5-4 L
AT MTL: 6-4 L
AT OTT 4-3 L
Panthers are 42-22-10 with 94 pts, are 4th in the East with 8 games left in the season. Playing 570 hockey.
GF: 264 (1st) GA: 206 (3rd) PP: 15.5% (10th) PK: 83% (27th)
Top 5 Scores:
Thompson 59-68-127
Lukes 29-49-78
Booth 25-50-75
Koistinen 10-56-65
Smith 18-42-60
Clemmensen 18-16 2.67GAA
Fedorov 24-16 2.67GAA
The Panthers were on a 5 game winning streak before bowing down to the Leafs, Habs, and Sens. Unforunate but still a good run, going 5-3 in the last 9 games. Something they will need to keep up if they want to dethrown the Caps from 1st in the East.
Thompson obtained 13 points in the last 7 games and is easily on par to take the record for the most points by a rookie (Selanne had 132 pts his rookie season). But can he also take the most goals scored by a rookie, only 8 games to go. (He would have to score 17 goals or 2.125 goals a game to accomplish this).
Koistinen (An amazing defensemen this year) still has the most points in the league for defensemen with 66, with rookie Smith right on his heels with 60.
Clemmensen and Fedorov are now 3rd in the league with 203 GA, and both have a GAA of 2.67, not bad for a back-up goalie and a rookie.
The Panthers will buckle down for the next 8 games, as they try and seek out the number one spot in the East.
Will do one final 8 game report and then a brief playoff write-up.Comment
