A lot of this realigning may become moot. The BCS is discussing a big change that would result in them only being responsible for the Championship Game. They'd get #1 and #2 (and the game could be held in non traditional sites like Cowboys Stadium) and the other bowls would go back to the old way of having conference tie ins, but no connection to the BCS.

While I'm thinking about it, this sounds like a good idea to me...

How would this make realignment moot?

Conference won't have to boost their number simply to keep the AQ bid. Now they just make their own bowl deals.

The Big Ten, SEC, and Pac-12 don't need to boost their number anyway. They get an AQ no matter what.

I don't know if I like the idea. This would kill the mid-majors since they would no longer have an opportunity to showcase themselves on the big stage and would, instead, be relegated to playing in the Humanitarian Bowl or something awful like that, even if they went 12-0.

If the BCS goes to this format, you won't see one Big Ten or SEC team play before New Years. Those conferences travel the best and the bowls will want to sign contracts with them. Big East and probably ACC wouldn't sniff a New Years Day game.

You realize that outside of the sugar, fiesta, and orange bowls, nothing would change, right? Besides those, the bowls all have conference tie ins. The big losers are the teams that rely on at large bids. Stanford, Boise St., etc. There won't be rules about who the bowls have to take, but the good teams will still play in good bowls.

Boise State would never play on the big stage again.

If they go Big East, they'd still get an in. And if they are undefeated, someone may take them for a chance to have a "co" national champion. Do they get an automatic in? No. But I think they'd be okay. Maybe the C-Usa/mwc merger aligns with the fiesta? Probably not, but it's possible.

I have always thought that the mid majors should just go ahead and make their own playoffs/championship. But I suppose the outside chance working into one of the big bowls, and the financial benefits that come with it is too tempting.

I'm not sure if the Big East would even get a New Year's Day Bowl if the BCS was gone. With WVU gone, there are no teams that travel worth a damn outside of maybe Rutgers. And few of the teams have national appeal.

The same situation could apply to the ACC, though I suspect that having FSU, VT, and Miami in the conference would save them.

Boise State needs to be smart and not join the Big East...i wish the Big 12 would have made an offer,Boise State and OU every year would have been fun.
