The 3-0 Cyclones hosted #25 Texas in week 5 in a huge game not only in the conference, but for Iowa St's new coach Ryan Dominick. Texas had the only really experienced Big XII QB coming back and it showed. David Ash shredded our defense, only having one incompletion in the whole first half. Texas took a 14-7 lead into the break. After getting the ball to start the 3rd quarter, Ash once again carved up our D and Texas managed to get a FG to make it 17-7. After a huge run by our sophmore QB Sam Richardson--he would finish the game with 190 yards rushing- we scored to make it 17-14. Texas held the ball for most the 4th quarter, but we made a huge stop with about 3 minutes left and Texas had to punt. Big runs by Richardson and our RB Jeff Woody, along with our backup running back who is actually better than Woody, but also a senior, we got the ball to the goal line with about a minute left. Texas D stood tall and forced us on a 4th down. Rather than tying the game with an easy FG with 20 seconds left, coach Dominick and Iowa state took a HUGE gamble and went for it. Play action pass, Richardson rolls out looking like he would run it in but Texas's DE is coming in fast. Richardson passes it to the flat to our junior FB Pierce Richardson who catches it at the 2, gets hit, spins and IN THE ENDZONE FOR 6!! IOWA ST TAKES THE LEAD WITH 10 SECONDS LEFT! After one last attempt by Ash, we would close out the game and win a crazy finish, remaining undefeated. One of the biggest finishes in Jack Trice stadium history. Iowa st has played Texas 11 times, only winning once, however this was Iowa State's first win over Texas at home.
After the win, Iowa State moves to #22 in the AP poll, but still unranked in the coaches poll. Up next we play Texas Tech at Lubbock, hoping to start out Big XII play with an important 2-0 start. Things don't get any easier, after Texas Tech we play Baylor on the road as well.
