Re: Official CBA Thread
Let's just scrap the draft then, why shouldn't every college player be free to sign with whoever they want? That's the way those top MBA students work, so that means it should work for the NFL too.

No, I am saying since players are forced to be drafted they shouldn't have a hard rookie cap.Comment

Re: Official CBA Thread
I thought even the veterans wanted a rookie pay scale? I know if I was a 5+ year vet that was an above average player I would be pissed that rookies are coming in and making 10+ mil more than I am on their first contractComment

Re: Official CBA Thread
I happened to listen to Mike & Mike this morning and they had both Goodell and Smith on (obviously at different times) and there's a serious disconnect in one area. They asked Goodell about Smith's insistence of seeing the books of all the NFL teams and Goodell told them that the PA has all the information they need and that it doesn't matter anyways because he's tired of talking points and just wants to negotiate. He further went on to state that showing the books to the PA is a futile exercise because the NBA has done that and Billy Hunter had poo pooed the numbers the NBAPA got.
Smith comes on later and they replayed that part of Goodell's interview and Smith was incredulous to say the least asking if that's Goodell's best argument against showing the books. He then went on to hammer the point that the players are being asked to give the owners a billion dollars so it makes sense that if you're going to give up that kind of money that you should see what the financial state of the league is and how that money is being spent especially in light of the fact that football is at its pinnacle in terms of popularity.
It also seems from listening to Smith that the 18 game schedule proposal isn't that HUGE of a sticking point to the players providing that there is some kind of medical insurance/coverage for players when their careers are over. He then went on to note that the league has a policy that players are only eligible for some medical benefits if they've played 3 years. An 18 game schedule would cut short many players' careers. The average length of an NFL career is about 3ish years but through calculations of what an 18 game schedule would do that number would drop to something like 2.74 years and many players would be left out in the cold.
Smith also said that despite reports to the contrary the PA and owners have been negotiating just about every day in some form or fashion.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Official CBA Thread
As far as the commish saying all the fans want 18 games and hate pre-season he is only half right. People I've talked with who watch the NFL could care less if they add another 2 because they actually take into consideration the damage done to these players by playing another 2 games. I've seen too many "Real Sports" and "Outside the Lines" segments to selfishly want another 7 hours of football at the stake of these players health after football. This request for them to play 2 more games coupled with no real promise of improved health care after NFL years would be a big "No" if I were a player.
As far as Pre-season games I think what people hate most about them is they cost the same as regular season tickets and they only see stars for maybe 2 quarters. They should be drastically lowered in price imo then fans probably wouldn't hate them so much.Last edited by NINJAK2; 02-07-2011, 09:16 PM.EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Re: Official CBA Thread
quick google search (I know that the most reliable source but bare with me):
Average MLB Player Salary 2010: 3.34M
Average NBA Player Salary 2010: 5.84M
Average NFL Player Salary 2010: $990,000 (I know NFL rosters are significantly bigger)
So let me get this straight. The NFL has BY FAR the most revenue generated of the 3 major sports and BY FAR the cheapest labor force. Plus nfl contracts aren't fully guaranteed. What exactly don't the owners like again? Just seems to me that the owners are being unreasonable. Other than the rookie salary's, what exactly isn't there to like? The owner's want the players to give back 1B and it's like WHY? They just had a SB with Indy and NO a year ago. That would be a ratings disaster with any other sport. Things seem pretty good for the owner's the way it is.Last edited by dsallupinyaarea; 02-08-2011, 07:23 PM.NFL - Vikings

Re: Official CBA Thread
Listened to Bill Simmons' podcast today and he said that Jerry Jones, Bob Kraft, and Jerry Richardson are the 3 main owners spearheading the owners side of the negotiations, with Richardson taking the alpha dog role. Maybe not the best source, but if this is right it kinda makes sense that Richardson is taking charge of this considering the last couple of years of moves the Panthers organization has made. It's pretty obvious that Richardson is willing to spare the product on the field in order to make the largest profit possible, and this is continuing with the CBA negotiations and the path the owners are taking (namely the 18 game schedule and complete disregard to the health of the players)Comment

Re: Official CBA Thread
In a sport as brutal as the NFL, I'm taking the players' side. The owners are just billionaires with dollar signs in their eyes. I half hope they do lock out and have it blow up in their faces, though I don't want the players to suffer.
Frick man, I just want to see professional football. It's a shame such a great game is a bajillion dollar industry, controlled just as much (more) by commercialization then the actual product on the field.
I do happen to like Goodell, though. I think when it comes down to it, he's a pretty fair guy and very "real," considering his high profile. He seems to be trying to better his sport and not just make money. Well, not at every corner.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
