Meh. You could say the exact same for baseball pitchers. I'm sure fans would know well beforehand when teams are sitting players too.

That's just it, the number of games might be the same, but the intensity and number of plays is very different. For the most part, the guys making big bucks only play 1/2 of the plays during the preseason (generally 1 quarter, then 1 half, then 3 quarters, then 1 quarter or not at all throughout the 4 preseason games) and I seriously doubt the intensity level of preseason games is the same as regular season games for the starters. Adding 2 regular season games in place of 2 preseason games significantly raises the already ridiculous toll that NFL players but on their bodies.

I don't think you understand. I should've quoted him, but my post was in reference to the article SPTO posted. Trust me, the general idea of 18 games I hate. But the idea stated in that article I don't mind at all.

Unless there is a rule about it, there's no way teams are going to say who is playing.

Yeah I thought that after I posted. I hope there would be a rule put in place so fans would know.

Could you imagine if they didn't?

What? Come on, now. Throw BK at wideout. I've still got the legs to be a part time RB and swing over to safety. We can make it happen!

You're leaving out A LOT of variables here. First, you can't just brush over the vast difference in the number of players being employed by each league you're comparing. How much money would the NFL have to bring in to have the average salary match that of NBA players when they have 12 (to 15) per team vs the 53 man roster? The NFL also has more specialists to worry about. Punters, kickers, long snappers, etc. are surely going to bring the average down while the 12th man on an NBA team could just as easily be a starter in a year or with injuries or just development.

Next, you mention 50/50. From what I understand, they're working with roughly 9 billion dollars. The owners take 1 billion off the top, and then the other 8 billion is split 60 (players) / 40 (owners). The players are willing to make that 50/50 on the 9 billion while the owners want 50/50 on the 8 billion OR want 2 billion off the top before splitting things up. Break the numbers down and you can see why there's a disagreement.

Baseball is bad comparison as every team can afford to pay 2 or more top line pitchers... some teams have had up to 4. Changing to an 18 game schedule isn't going to make it possible for every team to have 2 quality starting QBs no matter what the money ends up breaking down to. QBs make a ton of money... and that's only talking about one position. What about the oline? dline? You've got the players fans want to see and you also have the players that are necessary even though unnoticed. Depth generally shows with the top teams and this would eat into it without even accounting for injuries... which are going up on a yearly basis.

You're right, it's the best idea out there. But I still think it's a bad idea. I think 18 games is bad no matter how you slice it.

                    Re: Official CBA Thread

Basically, it boils down to this.....

The players dont want a lockout because they want to earn money and cant risk sitting out a year.

The owners do not want a lockout because, with the decertification of the union, they will be open to class action lawsuits for breach of contract.

The main problem is how the money will be handled. They have agreed on pretty much everything else. They just havent ironed out things like the years of rookie contracts. It will be worked out before we lose any football.

I can agree with this although I still like the idea. It's just compelling to me and I like seeing young guys get playing time in meaningful games. I think it'll even out for the most part. It's not like you'll have an entire team playing 2nd stringers for two games. I'm sure they'll spread it out and you'll have the majority of your players out there every game. And I'm sure the most important players, such as Manning, would be sitting out in the meaningless games or against bad teams. You're not going to have a Colts vs Ravens MNF game where Peyton or Ray Lewis aren't playing. I don't see the big deal in it honestly.

Regardless, I don't want to see it happen. I only like the idea relative to what it is. I'd much rather stick to the traditional 16 game schedule.

                        Sigh.

Text from plugged-in NFL person: "This CBA has no chance. The owners don't a deal. Take a break - a month off. You won't miss anything."
