    Re: Official CBA Thread

What does a decertified union mean for sports gaming? Would players need to be individually signed for their likeness?

You are essentially correct. It would be similar to what happened in the late '80s/early '90s when the union was for all intents and purposes decertified. You had games like Joe Montana Football or Troy Aikman Football where those guys likenesses were approved but everyone else was just random. This is because as you said the video game company would have to bargain with every player to get their likenesses into the game.

This explains why early editions of Madden had the correct number and general attributes of all the players but not their names or likeness.

It appears like if they do it, they are doing it so the owners can't lock them out. It would force a season next year or at least get the players paid. They could then sue if the owners didn't pay them.

The owners should call their bluff and then give any of the FAs minimal wage. The rest of the players that still have a contract have to be paid that amount. Then pass all the savings on to the season ticket holders and fans.

If the owners did that, the players would come crawling back as fast as they could. I don't want to see either group get richer, they need to both lose and give back to the fans that pay them all.

          Thanks that what I thought.

Would never, ever happen. The fans are not important at all. Clearly shown as with the NFL and their Superbowl debacle. Owners need to lose this war. But they'll ultimately win because they are holding all the keys and guarding all the gates.

And hey, if no pro football next year, college football will have all the spotlight and hopefully the BCS system show's its ugly flaws in full effect while the whole football world is watching.
What's the reasoning behind an 18-game regular season, though? I think the current set up is perfect.

An 18-game season would cut some careers short. Over an eight year career, you're talking about a whole other season added to a player's career.

I guess I just don't see the need for it.

I don't know if this has slipped by some people's radar but the owners 4 billion dollars from the networks even without a season was ruled as a violation of their contract with said networks by a court. There will be another court date in which the fate of said monies will be decided. It's most likely going to escrow to cover for both sides rather than being a war chest for the owners exclusively.

Thoughts on if that's a good thing or bad thing? I haven't paid enough attention to know how big of a deal this is.

Potentially good thing for us in the long run. The owners were counting on that money to be their war chest which would keep money flowing through the league aparatus while the players had no such "insurance" for lack of a better term. Now it looks like the money will have to be shared thus the players will have a little money to fall back on. This is good for the simple fact that the owners will NOT want any of that money in the players' hands.

It still means a lockout but we'll probably see a season unless the owners are truly intent on seeing this through with breaking the union.

They have to before the 4th of March or they can not decertify for six months. The only way they do not is if they really feel a new contract can be worked out.

Does anyone know why if the union decertify's the league can not offer individual contracts for players to play for and still have a league without the union?
