But can he? You're talking in hindsight, like if Texas knows for a fact that he'll turn them into national contenders in a few years, they'd do it, which is a no brainer. But given what we know now, under the assumption of a failed NFL stint, would Texas feel confident enough to give him the prime money at that age? Obviously if they KNOW he'll do it, they'll pay, but with the given info they'd still be gambling right?

I dunno, when you consider how much the government takes, I'm pretty sure they still want to make as much as possible. Also, I'm sure these guys live in huge homes which are expensive to maintain, regardless of how active their lifestyle may be.

And I'm sure Saban thinks he'll live til he's 150...

Saban's a god down here. He's not going anywhere.

And I say that as a fan of a Bama rival.

You mean like how Bama went 4-9, 6-6, 0-2*, and 6-7 in the 4 years before Saban got there, then (starting his 2nd season) went 12-2, 14-0, 10-3, 12-1, 13-1, 11-2, 12-2, and won 3 National Championships?

Texas would commit literal crimes to have that.

Also, stop making me defend him.

Why would Saban want to leave Alabama where he gets a free home loss that gets magically ignored every year? Pretty sweet deal.

At this point, it would be what he personally wanted to achieve, not money.

He'll get paid very well if he stays or leaves Alabama.

Saban used to be an assistant in the NFL too? Maybe he wants the challenge, though since he hasn't won a national championship in a couple of years, he may not want to leave, unless he wins it this year.

Was the head coach of the Dolphins. Didn't go well.

                    OK, from the Wiki:

He later served as an assistant coach at Syracuse, West Virginia, Ohio State, Navy and Michigan State in NCAA Division I-A, and with the Houston Oilers and Cleveland Browns in the National Football League.[14] Saban is considered part of the Bill Belichick coaching tree, having worked under him in Cleveland.
So some slight experience in the NFL. Wonder if he really worked with Bellichek that long.

He wasn't specifically interested in coaching, kind of fell into it:

Saban had not intended to enter coaching until Don James, his coach at Kent State, made him a graduate assistant while Saban waited for his wife to graduate.[13]

Because you can get upwards of 7-8 losses in the NFL that get ignored.

Saban was on Bellichek's staff from the very beginning in '91. If you've seen the A Football Life (Cleveland '94) you'll see that he and Saban seemed to be very close and had a good handle on how to coach and build up that team. Honestly, if they were there for another year or two Cleveland might've ended up being a top team in the league except well, we all know what happened.

I'm not sure that would apply to Saban though, considering what teams are willing to give him.

I think he means more like an NFL team can still make the playoffs and potentially win a Super Bowl even after losing that many regular season games. Less room for error in a college season.

Not a remotely accurate statement anyways, lose that many games and you aren't enjoying a bye and are away from home in the playoffs.
