They can pass though. I'd be more concerned about using the QBs to run too often, exposing them to big hits and bad injuries. That's asking for a short career.

I think it will be around For a while. The guys running it, Cam, RG III and Kaep all can make the throws necessary to keep defenses off balance.

It's a matter of control though. They do well on their designed runs and make plays with their feet otherwise, but at least one Redskins fan pointed out that most/all of RG3's injuries were on improvisations.

I think it will he around a while, longer than the wildcat because these guys can just sit in the pocket and throw if the option plays are getting bottled up consistently.

The big thing is that college keeps churning out guys who are effective throwers as well as runners. The guys running it now are unique all-around talents.

If you tried to run it with, say, Joe Webb you won't have success because he's so one-dimensional.

Much like "standard" QBs they'll probably be some top tier types coming out in the years ahead and your average career qb
. I don't think this would be any different.

Oh I agree that the guys should be smart when improvising not saying they shouldn't. Just think that the designed plays integrated into an offensive play style will work sustained.

Though selfishly part of me wants to see Chip Kellys Eagles average 50 a game a few years running that offense.

I think the one thing that could stop the read option from developing in the NFL is QB injuries and fear of injuries. The play in and of itself and all of the constraint plays you have off of it are just too good to completely go away.

Kaepernick and Wilson both do a great job of avoiding contact. Griffin really needs to do more to avoid the wear and tear on his body.

I think it will soon be a requirement for QB's to have the ability to run rather than a bonus.

                    Correct.

Concussion vs Atlanta on an unscheduled scramble.
Knee vs Ravens on an unscheduled scramble
Knee 1 vs Seattle tweaked trying to buy time on a pass
Final Knee vs Seattle torn up trying to recover a bad snap on a called passing play.

That is the beauty of the read option vs the NFL. Your best DL is left unblocked usually can't get to the QB, the LBs are reading the running back and cheating towards the run. So when a QB gets outside on a run, the biggest hitters (DE and OLB) are not a threat as you now have your QB running with CBs and Safeties.

RGIII for example took more shots in the pocket on called passes that he did on any read option run. I think it is a viable offense with the right QB, but it will be interesting to see what defense have for it next year.

I don't think it'll last, as these guys rack up more years in the league I think coaches will back away from the QB runs to preserve their career/seasons

To continue my point here is a doodle I made of the TD that RGIII scored against Dallas from 10 yards out. Plays like this really eliminate the risk for QB's running. You get the OLB/DE sucked in, the inside backer is also sucked in on the dive action, while you get your motion TE on the safety and and you have a CB vs WR to hold the edge. QB goes outside and has the sideline there to help him if he gets in trouble.

The pistol is way more flexible than the wildcat ever was. To defend it you need supreme discipline and quite frankly some luck.

I believe the read option will be around in some form for the next 5 years at least. A lot of the young QBs being churned out today can at least throw the ball fairly accurately so it's not like the Wishbone or something like that where they're at a serious disadvantage. Someone said that it may be a requirement for QBs to be able to run from now on and I agree with this. We're all going to have to go through this phase until the stereotypical drop back QB becomes popular again.

I think it's cyclical, the mobile QBs will be popular for the near future and then something will happen that spurs the return of standard drop back QBs. It might be an issue with injuries, it might be defenses adapting, who knows, but the league seems to have strategic cycles.

Part of the problem with that is where are these pocket passers going to come from. The spread and the many branches off it, are all over college football, and that doesn't look to be slowing down anytime soon. As long as the majority of HS and youth coaches are taking their best player and putting him at QB, to get the ball in their hands as much as possible the number of classic drop back passers who will be ready will continue to dwindle.
