This is true but the college game and the NFL have gone through so many permutations that at some point we're going to see at least a few drop back QBs again at some point. Remember, the NFL and college game was run dominated in the '70s than we saw the vertical game for a good stretch of the '80s along with the West Coast Offense and its variations for 20 years.

This could either be a short term cycle (5-10 years like the Run n' Shoot was) or a long term one like the West Coast Offense.

    Time will tell.

Right but you still have guys like Flacco that show up from other divisions. If the GMs and scouts in the future start shifting focus back to the slow footed strong armed guys, they'll sniff out the prospects. You'll still have combine studs and whatnot, plus the all star showcases, it's hard to say really but the league always adapts one way or another.

i think a very telling sign is that even a lot of the "pocket passers" today still have the ability to get out and run. there are guys who aren't necessarily labeled running guys but can certainly do it if they need/want to like Rodgers, Romo, Luck, hell even Flacco can move around. there are much less Peyton Manning types who just never take off and can't really anyway.

Honestly I think the days of the pure pocket QB who can't run for **** has to end sometime. Defensive guys are just becoming too athletic, and having a guy who even if he isn't run first, can scramble for yards if needed to, is a definite luxury. Rodgers was the start of that (or if you wanna go back, Steve Young), but I think you'll see teams go for that much more, even if it's not a guy like RGIII who can be prolific at running.

I say that as an ODU fan, and we have Taylor Heinicke at QB who just won D-IAA/FCS player of the year, set the record for passing yards but also able to scramble, and of course playing in the spread offense. I think the spread offense is more likely to stay around long term than the pure pistol offense.

Don't forget Tarkenton and Cunningham. They were doing it before Young. All of those guys had to adept as their mobility lessened though and that will be the key for the current crop too.

On a board I frequent with a lot of older guys (and guys who've done newspaper writing) one of them compared Russell Wilson to Tarkenton. I didn't really make that connection until I bore it in mind while watching the playoffs and I have to say I can see it. Tarkenton actually still ran quite a bit late in his career but he had a very good arm and was a lot more judicious in his run selection. I see that quality in Wilson. He actually scrambles and looks to PASS rather than just run for yardage but will when he has to.

I agree with you that the current crop all have that ability to run but the ones who can throw the ball effectively in the pocket or without scrambling like crazy will have longer and more effective careers. Interestingly, one thinks of Kaepernick as a guy who only can run but apparently his passing numbers are better IN the pocket.

All we can say at this point in time with certainty is that the NFL is in the middle of an interesting sea change in the way the QB position is played.

                      I'd give him a tryout.

I mean, Packers could use a backup to B.J. Raji so he's not out there all the time.

Oakland retired his number because he was so bad. Now that's an accomplisment.

Russell's three seasons in Oakland were so disastrous he's been called the greatest bust of all time and the Raiders refused to give his No. 2 to Terrelle Pryor in 2011 when the rookie quarterback requested the number.
