I really dont like the CBS ticker with the big yellow background for final scores. Everytime it scrolls from a game in progress to a final game, I see it out of the corner of my eye and assume my game has a penalty.

Is it just me or was today just a dreadful day for injuries?

I was watching RedZone and basically every 2 minutes they had to switch games because of an injury timeout.

They've announced they will change it next week.

Okay it may be impossible to play defense. That Malcolm Floyd hit is gonna get fined but the technique was fine, he was just in a precarious position. I would not say defenseless though, just vulnerable. It wasn't bang-bang, he got stuffed as the second tackler came in and made the hit. I don't know what a defender is supposed to do. Tony Dungy just said treat them like a sliding QB but that's a bad precedent. Now gang tackling/hitting is going to be non-existent and we'll see more ball carriers breaking free from a sure tackle and making a big play in what looked like a dead play.

This is never going to be solved or end.

It is going to have to be accepted that football WILL damage you down the line in many ways. You sign the dotted line, and that's what you're accepting. What should be changed is contracts: they should be guaranteed to offset the health risks. And help from the NFL down the line should be assured. They make enough profit to afford to help out the guys who put their bodies on the line to make that profit.

Football won't be a sport in 25 years if the pervading mindset is basically that you put your life after 35 in the toilet all for a decent salary for a few years.

NFL dudes aren't gladiators. There has to be a safer way to play the game.

I could be wrong, but an think there are more people that do lead healthy and productive lives after football than those that don't.

Well obviously that is the only answer

                        There are many, sure

Then you have the guys like Turley who will never lead a normal life again, or Junior Seau who killed himself. But I guess they knew that when they signed the contracts, right?

                          Re: NFL Off Topic

The brain stuff guys didn't know as much about. But I've always known about players who have shot knees, backs, hips, etc. That has always been the inherent risk to running full speed into large men multiple times a day 16 weeks a year.

Shoot, I played backyard football for 5 years until I was 18. We played hard, physical, and often. My one knee is likely missing a ligament or a torn meniscus, my other is weak, my shoulders ache. And we were never compensated!

I don't see a way around keeping it safe without bastardizing the core nature of this game. Just like with racing, you can't impose a speed limit of 55 MPH to keep collisions safer, you can't eliminate the big hits and strong tackles. Penalizing and fining for misguided and wrong hits is a good start but it's getting out of hand. These players don't know how to tackle without getting fined. Their are some reckless players like Meriweather, but a lot of other guys aren't targeting the head on purpose. The Eagles hit was set up by Floyd ducking his head and ramming into the shoulder/body of the defender. I just don't see how that could have been avoided without completely avoiding the tackle... Which I think is just wrong. You are asking a defender to NOT hit a player who is still very much a ball carrier. He is not a sliding QB, he is not obviously on his way out of bounds, he's not in mid air with his back turned and eyes set on the football. That is a bang-bang, football tackle/hit that you can't prepare for and can't eliminate. Chalk that one up to the nature of the game.

Now Meriweather continuing to launch himself around like a missile is ridiculous. He's not trying to tackle or stop a player, he's trying to make the highlight reel at all costs. You think for a dude who was injured all of last year, he would be more conscious of his technique or maybe even apprehensive. Instead, he's throwing his body around with no thought as to the repercussions despite safety being emphasized in every NFL talk show. It's players like Meriweather who need to be fined and suspended and who make this game more violent then it needs to be. You can still be aggressive, fly around, and be violent. But have some regards for your own body as well as the one you're about to crush. Completely irresponsible and out of control. Highlight reel hits can still exist, and they can be safer then that. Sometimes a guy will be in a bad position or put himself in one, and an injury will occur. That's collateral for a collision game. But practically going out of your way to essentially kill a ball carrier should not and does not have a place in this game anymore. Make a football tackle and you can't be blamed. Kamikaze a guy and you deserve to pay up or sit down a game.

Regarding player safety, injuries and long term effects of playing football.

Yes, some guys get messed up pretty bad, but that's why they are paid such ridiculous amounts of money, it's a risk they willingly take. It's a part of the game and it always will be.
