    Re: NFL Off Topic

The Return to DC has begun...

The Washington Redskins organization has “started the process” of designing a new stadium to serve as the team’s home, owner Dan Snyder told Comcast SportsNet in an exclusive interview Wednesday.

“Whether it's Washington, D.C., whether it's another stadium in Maryland, whether it's a stadium in Virginia, we've started the process,” Snyder said.

“We are going to push forward. We've started meeting with architectural firms. We are in the process of developing because it is a long term that you do it.”

The current home of the Redskins, FedEx Field, opened in 1997. Prior to the opening of FedEx, the Redskins played at RFK Stadium, which opened in 1961.

According to Snyder, plans for a new stadium have RFK in mind.

“We've already seen some preliminary drawings and I'm going to be very retro with it,” he told CSN. “It's gonna feel like RFK. It's gonna move like RFK. I love that, I actually asked architectural firms to do it and they said that they can do it. I said that I think the lower bowl sections are going to want to rock the stadium like the old days.”

Snyder gave no official timeline for approval, but said the proposed designs could then become a stadium that hosts a Super Bowl in the future.

“I'd like to see it sooner than later, but we love FedEx Field,” he said. “It's a great place to feature our home games, but it's 17 years old now. I think it's time for us to start looking and we're doing it.

"I think this region, not only this town, this region deserves a Super Bowl. It ought to be here, it would be a fantastic accomplishment. It's the biggest sporting event in the globe. It's the nation's capital, it's a no-brainer."

      Would it replace RFK?

I mean... I haven't lived there for 4 years now, but... there's not really a ton of space in DC.

It would be cool if we'd stop replacing stadiums every 15 years.

            35+ years?

            Who knows, it's so arbitrary.

Not every team can be financed by a community that is $13,000 under the median household income average of the United States.

Let's compare apples to apples. It really is stupid that this particular incident is THE standard of comparison when there is a beloved player on the Ravens who beat up his girl and threw bleach on her. Other players in the league have pushed their pregnant girlfriend down the steps... or dragged them down the stairs by their hair.

Come on man, just accept that Gordon is an idiot that doesn't get it. He's quickly becoming a waste of talent, but that's nobody else's fault but his own.
It's bc Rice is a recognizable star and that video of him dragging her out of the elevator took it to the next level. I'm 100 percent sure if there wasn't actual video of the aftermath there wouldn't be as much outrage ab it.

If they plan on going back to DC, then that's the only spot in the city they could put it at.

I can't see them going out to VA. But yeah, there's not much space in DC other than in SE. I know they were talking about building a Soccer Stadium for DC United but I'm guessing that won't happen if Snyder goes thru with this. This is/was probably the worst kept secret in the area.

The Deadspin article hints at a possible name-change/new stadium deal theory.
But maybe that's all part of Snyder's plan. Maybe he knows the name has to change eventually, but he's going to make sure he gets a huge, expensive new stadium out of it.This exact theory was espoused by former Washington GM Vinny Cerrato last month:
"I said this when this first started a year ago or whatever, I said the only way I see him eventually changing the name is if — IF — he gets a new stadium out of it, downtown, where old RFK was. And he builds a stadium bigger than [Jerry Jones's], which he would do, bigger and better than Jerry's. He gets a Super Bowl. All that. I said that's the way that maybe he would change the name. Getting the property, getting the land, getting a good deal from the city to make concessions to change the name."
Not sure how much it holds water, but I wouldn't put it past Dan to do that.

FedEx Field is a dump. It was designed in the 80s(it shows) and rushed to completion before Jack Kent Cooke passed on. There are other logistical issues like not having a closer Metro stop and the stadium being next to nothingness as well. It was just poorly thought out and executed. Snyder is trying to dump money into it to make the fan experience better, but its like putting lipstick on a pig really.

Snyder's better off cutting bait and going forward with designing the new stadium. I wouldn't imagine it would break ground any time soon. I would think that by the time everything is in place to build it, FedEx Field will be well into its 20s. It'll be interesting to see where they would drop the new stadium in DC (i hope it goes back there) or if they tear down RFK and build over it.

There actually is a close metro stop by FedEx. The problem is the area where it's located at isn't exactly a "safe spot"(depending on the person)to be walking around at during certain times of the day/night.

Not sure how much stock I put into the "New name/new stadium" deal though.

There ain't enough space in DC to make it bigger than Jerruh World.
