    Re: NFL Off Topic

There is a lot more to owning a sports franchise than the bottom line and profitability. Obviously being profitable is #1 because no owner is in the business of losing money.

The other side to it is putting a competitive team out there who can compete for a Championship. Do I blame Jerry Jones for not wanting to step down as GM? No, it's his team and who wouldn't want to run an NFL franchise. I understand why Cowboys fans have issue with him as GM, and they have ever right to complain. The brand might not be suffering, but the on the field product sure is.

      More wins = more money.

How much more revenue would they generate if they were able to not only be consistent playoff contenders, but make it to the NFC Championship and Super Bowl? That's where they're losing money. Staying level is fine I guess, but if the thirst isn't there then what's the point?

The NFL is a business. The bottom line is the only thing when it comes to an owner. Why do they want to win championships? Money. Why change if the money is still there?

You can live in a fantasy land where owners try to do things for the greater good, but most of these guys are shrewd businessmen.

The other part you mentioned is a small part and pales in comparison in a owner's eyes.

Because winning generates even more money. Let's take a look at the New England Patriots.

Robert Kraft purchased the team for $175 million back in 1994 when they were among the least valued franchises in all of football. In 2013 they were reported to be worth $1.3 billion by Forbes.

Yeah, Cowboys are a established brand already, but winning would generate even more money.

So basically your logic is along the lines of: Why should I have great results and make loads of money if I can have mediocre results and make loads of money?

            Can't agree with that.

I'd say ego is a pretty big driving force as well. A lot of these guys don't just own a sports franchise to make money, they've long dreamt of being an owner.

Clearly part of Jerry's dream was being the man behind the football operations, and while nobody likes losing, his ego sure as hell isn't gonna let him come out and say everyone is right and he's the problem.

Of course ego is huge, it's THE reason why he hasn't stepped down as GM.

If he had a GM with the results he's been having, that GM would've been fired a long time ago.

Well, enough JJ discussion for me, I really don't mind him being the GM because I don't like the Cowboys.

Absolutely, and I'm saying it is a driving force behind MANY owners' motivation to buy a team.

There are a hell of a lot more easy ways to make money, but nothing's cooler than saying you own a sports franchise, except of course saying you own a championship sports franchise.

Reports coming out Brandon Browner's appeal was rejected by the NFL. He is suspended indefinitely. It was a good run BB. Smh.

I think Jerruh is an easy answer. This Cowboys team has talent everywhere every year (Who assembles that?) and every year they underachieve.

Personally I think he needs to fire their entire staff.

They may have "talent", but that have absolutely no depth. That is where the competent teams and GMs make a living. Jerry might be killing it in rounds 1-3, but his failures in rounds 4-6 are why his teams always swoon in December.

Sean Lee is a perfect example. Last year Lee goes down and the defense start to suffer. You would think they would find some quality depth behind him, but they didin't. Not to say that better run franchises don't make the same mistakes. Green Bay at QB this year. But its not the norm for them like it is in Dallas.

Don't think this matters too much for the Seahawks SB hopes.. that Secondary is more about Scheme and ET and Sherman are the 2 true cogs that make everything else go. They can plug in guys like Maxwell, and Lane and not see a drop off. Because of Coaching/Scheme/Front 7 pressure.
