Here is an article that covers Brady's contract signings since about 2010. He gave up his guaranteed money barring injury.

Speaking of QB contracts, cap trouble, etc, I read a Greatland article earlier today talking about the Saints cap situation after releasing Galette. It's bad. And Brees cap number in 2016 is supposed to be something like $24 mil.

If the Saints were to make him available after this season, I could see some of the aforementioned QB-starved teams making a trade for Brees, even though it would be as a one year rental with only the possibility of extending a few more.

They will restructure him. The NFL cap has so many different loopholes in it that it's very easy to maneuver cap space. Like the Patriots do, there was an article written in the past year that they were under the real money spent floor and was ranked like 27th in the league in real money spent. But they always have little cap space to work with. Last year they had to trade Mankins because of cap hit and wasn't going to restructure his contract.

Imo something in the $13-15 mil per year range (with an above average amount of that money fully guaranteed) would be fair.

Maybe, but Brees ain't getting any younger. A team like the Saints who are already in cap hell probably don't, or at least shouldn't, want to just kick the can down the road with an aging QB, as good as that QB might be.

So you think that he's worth less than Andy Dalton (avg $16 mil per year) and Alex Smith (avg $17 mil per year)?

No, which is why I said he should get a higher % of guaranteed money than the other QB's in that general range.

EDIT: Dalton's deal is 6 yrs/ $96 mil but only $17 mil guaranteed; Smith's deal is 4 yrs/ $68 mil, $45 mil guaranteed. Imo the latter would be a good starting point for a fair contract for Wilson.

Yeah, he'll have to take a pay cut or something if he wants to be the source of cap relief. Restructuring would have to include an extension or something.

Too low in the world of NFL economics. I personally don't think Wilson can carry a team w/o that defense. But based on the Seahawks per and post Wilson he is right to ask for that money. Seattle is correct to try to "low-ball" him (using low-ball loosely).

This is the game Seattle doesn't want him to walk and in the back of his mind Wilson knows he's in a great situation in Seattle. He is loved by the fans and media. Each takes huge risk in not getting a deal done.

Seattle could fall back to a 7-9 team. Pete and Co could be run out of town for letting him go. Wilson could walk get his huge deal and see what it's like to throw a ball 30+ times a game in obvious passing situations as the team expects to get thier money's worth and a new fan base expects similar results to what he did in Seattle regardless of the team around him.

High stakes poker is being played by all involved. Will be interesting to watch it play out.

I wasn't comparing the positions as much as I was comparing the negotiating position. Unrestricted (Suh) vs. negotiating under threat of the tag (Watt).

If Wilson rode this out to UFA (he won't but humor me), there's no doubt in my mind he'd get the biggest QB deal and it would have very little to do with where he ranks in comparison to Rodgers/Luck.
