It would be ok if this was the 1st year of doing this but it's not and they have also traded too many top draft picks the last few years. They've already extended the window to get to this year, so that bill is continuing to grow and it is coming due. Right or wrong for extending the window to try to win, you have to pay the bill at some point.

The Jags did the same thing and it cost them all most 10 years

Cheaper to sign after they cut him and don't have to pay the guaranteed amount so can cut without any costs.

No one is disputing that there is a cost to what they are doing. We all agree on the cost. Most of us also agree that the cost is worth it if they win a SB.

But they won't be fielding replacement level players anytime soon. Its not some salary cap disaster the likes of which have never been seen before.

Not necessarily. Depends on the specifics of his contract with the Rams. I don't know the details and don't care to look it up, but usually when you trade for a guy his old team is still on the hook for a portion of his guaranteed money. From a financial standpoint its usually cheaper to trade

Saints WR Michael Thomas announced today that he will not be returning this season from Ankle Surgery.

There was also a report from ESPN that the Saints and Browns had talks about a possible OBJ trade but couldn’t work out the terms.

Sounding like the Browns and Beckham are possibly working towards a release as the team told him to stay home, per Kevin Stefanski.

Some team is going to regret claiming Desean Jackson today if he does get claimed, lol.

Edit: ah. He won't be claimed, if at all, until Thuraday.

If I’m understanding his contract correctly, there’s no guaranteed money left in Beckham’s contract. I wouldn’t mind the Bears putting in a waiver claim. Let Fields throw some bombs to him, if it doesn’t work cut him

Remains to be seen what they're able to restructure on his contract, we'll see sometime next week probably.

Divorce officially official: After days of negotiations, the Browns and Odell Beckham Jr. finally reached a settlement that will result in him being placed on waivers Monday, after which he can be claimed Tuesday at 4 pm, per league sources. Additionally, any team that claims Odell Beckham Jr. would inherit $7.25 million of salary for the remainder of the season, per sources. The cost is considered high for a player that now will be considered a rental with this being the last year of his contract.

That seems so strange to me that they removed the last two years of the contract. They only had two $1 million roster bonuses and no guaranteed money after this year so it shouldn’t stop anyone from claiming him. It seems like Cleveland did him a huge favor by making him a free agent after this year

It discourages any bad team from claiming him basically, expensive for less than a year and that's all you get from him unless you can convince him you are his future home and can get an extension/new deal done.

Also wouldn't be part of the compensatory picks formula either I don't think.

Yeah he is not a compensatory free agent

Seems like it may have been done to facilitate some team picking him up off waivers, though I doubt any team would at that price.

My understanding is that you are released and put on waivers, any team that claims you inherits the remainder of your contract. If no team claims you you become a free agent.

Where my confusion lies is thinking whats the point. From what I've read, no team is picking him up on waiver because of the price tag. So he was bound to be a FA after this year anyway.

Its in Cleveland's interests for him to be picked up off waivers so they can pass that cost on to a different team.

To me, the contract is more attractive and I’d be more likely to make a claim if it has the extra two years on it. This is like the Moss situation to me and if I’m a team and can get him resembling the way he looked in his prime I know I’ve got him under contract for two more years with none of his salary guaranteed so if he becomes a problem I can cut him. Take off the two extra years and now he’s just a half season rental that I’m going to have to give guaranteed money to if I want to keep him around

Ok now the Beckham stuff makes more sense, there is a settlement that if he goes unclaimed Cleveland only has to pay him $4.25 million so Cleveland pays less if he’s not claimed and worst case for Beckham is he gets claimed and hits free agency after this year
