      Re: 2011 Golfer's Thread

I've been managing to get out at least once a week, which is nice.

I was visiting my parents for the holiday weekend and got out on the course I grew up playing on twice. Shot a 83 and an 82 in those two rounds, which is right around average for me. This past Monday I had a really weird round for league. Started out with 3 doubles, then birdied 4, doubled 5, then parred out for a 43. I'm pretty content where my game is at really. Of course I'd like to eliminate the stupid mistakes that prevent my scores from consistently being in the 70's, but I'm also not that serious about practicing like I was when I was younger. I mostly play to relax and have fun.

One amazing thing about this season so far is that I haven't lost a ball yet.

I've been lucky enough to play on league night and one other round per week and I think I've only lost 2 balls all year. It got to the point where I had to clean out my bag and have about 2 dozen balls to hit as practice balls, I've found so many more looking for league mates balls than I've lost.

I think my 2 keys for this is I have cut my backswing down to around 3/4 and even a little less with driver, and I am being much more "course manage"-y and not going for long iron carries over water and other stupid attempts.

My handicap has improved 2 strokes already...directly due to one less lost ball penalty per round.

The streak is over. I lost a ball last night. Meh 45 in league last night. It was the first time they've really cut the greens down, and I couldn't get the speed down. That coupled with what were some real diabolical pin placements led to three 3-putts.

This weekend I play in the annual Father's Day scramble with my dad and uncle. Looking to win some $$$$$$!

            Re: 2011 Golfer's Thread

I played in a Chamber of Commerce blind draw scramble last Friday. I was the "A" player with a 9 handicap, so I knew we would be in trouble. However, my other 3 players made this very interesting. My "D" player was playing for the first time all year and only plays a couple times a year anyway. If he wanted to hit the fairway at "12 o'clock", he played a slice where he aimed at "9 o'clock". Brutal. My "B" & "C" players were both over 70 years old and one was a woman. God Bless her, she could putt pretty well, but when I'm the longest hitter on my team, we are in HUGE trouble. We finished next to last.

Then I played 18 more holes that afternoon and shot 77 and bogeyed the last 3 holes. Played 36 holes on Saturday shooting 82 and 80. Then played 18 more on Sunday and shot 82 and bogeyed the last 4 holes. I need to learn to finish I guess. When I got to the last 9 holes on Sunday I was so tired of golf that I just wanted to go home and it showed. I shot 38 on the front and 44 on the back. Heading out to a league tonight though.

              Re: 2011 Golfer's Thread

Played a 4-man best ball tournament this past weekend. My brother assembled the team. Our "A" player played a year on the Hooters tour before having to give up completive golf due to a heart condition. Not real sure he should have been out in 90 degree heat but that was his choice. I was the "B" player and my brother and his other friend were our "C" & "D" players but it was more like both were "D's". I played the course a week before the tournament and shot a 4 over 76 and the "A" player played it a month ago and shot a 6 under 66. I knew between the two of us we should be in great shape. It was a shotgun start. We finished 10 under 62 and thought we had a great shot at winning. Most of the teams were made up of old dudes. Once the scores were posted we were surprised to find a team posted a 15 under. This team played behind us so we kept an eye on them the entire time. There is no way they shot that low. Come to find out they spent $100 on cheats and we didn't. The "cheats" included mulligans and arm wedges that didn't count as strokes. I was pissed to know we got beat by people who cheated. Each member won a golf bag with the course name on it and a $50 gift card to Dick's Sports. I could have cared less about the prizes it was the fact they cheated to win and we played golf. That crap pisses me off. We had 2 eagles, one on a par 5 and one on a par 4 that we drove the green on. Oh well our team knows we didn't have to cheat to turn in our score. I hope to get out some next week. I have done nothing but work on my rental houses this week.

Shot a 61 in my league last week...on the front 9. I can't hit my driver anymore to save my life...I went from hitting it 200-225 and straight to 125 and slicing the crap out of it.

Yeah, jbrew, I absolutely hate tournaments that let teams do that. They already get you to pay for the tournament then when you show up you have to shell out more money to be on a level playing field? Crock of ****.

I refuse to pay for those kinds of things unless it's a fundraiser. And even then I feel really stupid using a mulligan in a 4-person scramble.

Yeah if 1 of 4 people can't hit a playable shot then you don't need to be playing competitive golf. I grew up playing competitive golf since I was 15 years old so I really hate crap like that. I can admit when I'm not good enough and don't feel the need to cheat to make my self feel better. I don't play in tournaments any more but now and then I will get a call from a friend or family member that is playing in some tournament that benefits some group. This was in honor of a guy that went to my church growing up. I felt like I had to play it when my brother called me because the business my father owns paid for the 4-some and my brother need a 4th. I can deal with the mulligans but the "arm wedges" that don't count as a stroke and you can throw the ball as far as you can. Each mulligan and arm wedge cost $5 each. They made over $500 just off that crap.

This weekend I'm going to play a round with my brother-in-law and 2 of his buddies. It is always a fun time for me. I laugh at them the entire round. My brother-in-law shots in the high 80's to low 90's while his 2 friends shot over 100. The last time I played the course they play on I shot a 3 under 67. I end up walking around finding balls most of the day while I wait to hit.

                      Re: 2011 Golfer's Thread

I disagree. If you are going to a fundraising golf scramble and expecting a competitive environment you are going to the wrong place.

The whole point of a fundraising tournament is to raise money for whatever the cause is.

I'm sure you know this but putting together these tournaments is not only expensive but also very time consuming. Before moving to Pittsburgh I worked for a Catholic Youth center for years and we held a tournament every year. We started planning in January for a July tournament. The whole point is to raise as much money for the worthy cause as possible.

I'm a golfer, in competitive matches, such as the two leagues I'm in, I hate cheating, but you can't be mad when you go to a scramble fundraiser and someone wins because they bought mulligans.

Scrambles are meant to be a fun way to raise money for something. You aren't even playing your own shots all day.

I fully understand that and know the time invested. I didn't play to win, I played to just play some golf. I love the game of golf. I coach high school kids and I try to teach them the honor of golf. I get mad when people feel they have to win a charity tournament to make them feel better about themselves. I got mad that day because they were walking around with chest puffed out telling everyone how great they were. I hate people who are like that. Our team was joking about who would win the thing before we started. We had picked this team to win. I knew one of the guys on the winning team. I use to beat him when our high schools played.

I don't play charity tournaments all that often and never go in thinking my team has to win. I know they are just for fun. I just really hate people like those guys. I work with people like that who sit around talking about how they are the greatest teachers in the world, or talk about when they coached some kid who played college sports. The need to make your self feel better about your lack of skills is foreign to me.

I agree with you kehlis, that's why I mentioned the fact that I'll buy them at fundraisers.

But I've seen a couple scramble tournaments where the club is just putting it on and you can buy them. That's what I don't like. The club is already making plenty of money with the team entry fees and all the food/beverage they're selling with a full course all day.

Anywho, I can't wait to get out of work in a couple hours to head to Michigan. It's always great getting out with my dad and uncle on the course I grew up playing in this scramble tourney (no mulligans available, lol). It's really fun because the same guys are always competing year after year. We usually end up in either Championship or 1st flight. We've never won the whole thing, but maybe this is the year!

This annoys me as well in any tournament regardless of the circumstances.

I'm the same as you guys, I'm competitive, I don't buy mulligans or any cheats either, I HATE not playing well in tournaments, which is why long ago I decided to treat scrambles as more of a time with friends and less about the game of golf.

I'll save that for when the money is on the line with the brother!
