Re: Actual Golf: General Tourney discussion

I've decided that 2023 is the year I get really into watching golf.

Been watching the third round of the Genesis Invitational.

I saw this Rahm fella hit a beautiful chipshot onto the green, and then two holes later hit his first drive straight into the trees.

The first broadcast of LIV is on the CW tomorrow. I'll give it a shot - why not? Will be interesting to see if nothing else.

I watched for a bit. The golf was mostly okay. The presentation is still god awful. That leader board needs a drastic change and is completely distracting.

They are also trying way too hard to push the team rhetoric (and for the record, I DO like the team aspect of it). But they are talking about long standing rivalry’s between teams and we just started the second season lol.

However, if you like watching sports without commercials this is a win for you (not a good sign for the league though).

And last - the loud music. Why? They are blasting it and it’s not like it’s good music (I know that that is subjective) but it sounded like they were in a nightclub. At one point I think one song was just a 30 minute loop of the same techno beat.

I can see why most of these guys signed with LIV but golf and music don't mix. Unless we're talking Caddyshack.

I noticed the music, too, I didn't have the volume on too long, I kinda got the feel they want it to be the Waste Management all season, which might be cool if they can figure it out.

The in game tweets, though, I couldn't tell if they were few and far between because the tweets were bad, or if there was simply no chatter.

one was like "checking in from northern ohio, go Aces!" idunno how that helps with anything, but I guess that goes for all tweets that get shown during any event

Agree with you guys on the music - it's just too distracting and I hate it (whether on a golf broadcast or out on the course IRL). I get that there's a 'party' atmosphere, but there has to be a line somewhere, as it's still (allegedly) serious golf.

The leaderboard/NASCAR pylon thing on the side has to go. It's ugly and confusing and not informative at all.

They also need to do a better job telling you where everyone is on the course and what hole people are playing - I had no idea where anybody was in relation to the rest of the guys. I know it's a shotgun start, but I'd like to know which holes people are playing at any given time.

One big differentiator if they wanted to do this is to broadcast all their events in 4K. I noticed that both the PGA Event (Honda) and the LIV Event were not being broadcast even in full HD (at least on my provider). This is ridiculous in 2023.

They have a heck of a long way to go for sure, but this is the first full season, so of course there are going to be deficiencies. It's not like the PGA Tour had it all figured out in year 1-2 either.

My favorite part was a guy at one point complaining about a fan making too much noise before he was about to play his next shot yet in the background we could hear techno music booming.

As far as on the course, I'm not a fan but I've gotten used to it. If it's a scramble and we're there for fun it doesn't bother me much anymore as long as it's decent music (and I'm not overly picky).

But keep it out of my league final rounds lol.

I watched quite a bit thought the coverage was OK. More Feherty and less of the other two guys. The on course female reporters was a nice touch. Don't know about the shotgun. I like the idea of the leaders going off last on Sunday guess I'm old fashioned. I like the luck of the draw aspect with weather the way it has been done traditionally. I hope this isn't the future of golf.

it's gonna take a long time for any of the broadcast channels to output in 4k, the demand isn't strong enough

that would really be something though, if the LIV backers decided they have so much money they could fund the entire CW enterprise with 4K output, and the very first OTA channel with 4K was CW, that would be nuts lol

CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, all still doing 1080i at best, and then CW comes out with 4K, that'd be something

Agree all-around, but I do think the shotgun start has merit outside of just making everyone play in the same weather conditions (which I like, by the way). It also gets everyone on-and-off the course - the entire day's play - in 4.5 hours. That's sorta nice in my opinion, although their coverage was pretty shoddy I think. They needed to show more players, not just the same 3-4 featured guys. I think I saw like 1 shot from Phil all day? I know he was out of contention, but if you're watching LIV, it isn't because you're invested in who is going to win the Mayakoba LIV event. I don't even know if Brooksie was out there, as I don't think I ever saw him swing a club in anger. Poor breadth of coverage in my estimation.

You are, of course, entirely correct l3ulvl. It hadn't even occurred to me that in order for LIV to broadcast their event in 4K, they'd have to upgrade the entire CW network infrastructure. Pretty sure that's not happening LOL

Maybe at least on the app-based broadcasts? Youtube? Who knows. I just know I need 4K golf in my life.

I'm sure it's not THE future of golf. It may be a part of the future of golf, but how big of one remains to be seen. The PGA is suddenly looking a lot more LIV-like given some recent announcements, though...(to its detriment, in my opinion).

Certainly LIV has forced a lot of changes in golf. Quite a few people have lost jobs lately.

I wasn't aware of people losing jobs in golf due to LIV. I would have thought the opposite...can you elaborate or comment a bit on that?

Announcers have lost jobs and The Golf Channel is currently broadcasting out of Stamford CT. I think they used to be down in Florida though I might be mistaken about that.

                              Koch and Maltbie are gone.
