I have to say, whatever comes out of this consumable golf ball situation, this has left a really bad taste in my mouth.

The content providers (NextMakers) came out immediately once they got their hands on a preview build of the game to say that the DLC golf balls were not pay to win, were not a big deal, and you'd be totally fine without them.

Now, the eve of release is here, and they all begin to share their "concerns" about this, and they didn't notice it until this weekend. I get that they couldn't play online until now, but they did have access to the consumable balls in the preview build...

And now they are telling everyone to "relax" and HB is aware of it, and that same old song and dance. But this very much feels like a conscious decision that was made and is NOT an issue or a bug. It is a way to incorporate more DLC transactions to make more money.

I hope they do something to address it...at the very least, let societies restrict the use of the consumable balls. But I am really doubting that will be the case.

I think 'content creators' and anyone else - reviewers, etc - who have any relationship whatsoever with a game company (even if that relationship is only providing a game early and/or for free) should have anything they say taken with a grain of salt. Just like auto reviews (or any other reviews for that matter), if the person doing the reviewing didn't go out and buy/rent the item themselves with their own money, their opinions/motivations are fundamentally not unbiased (by definition).

I will go watch some of their youtube stuff just to see the game in motion, but I won't listen to a word they say with regard to the actual game or in-game economy or anything else.

I will be happy if the society leaderboards work properly and they add option to restrict golf balls. If they do those 2 things we could have a really strong game on our hands.

Crazycanuck sort of answered my question about the difference between Quality and Performance setting on the consoles. He said he played a round in Florida on a developer XBox (he has no idea if it was a Series S or X, a One X, or possibly even an OG), and that it played much smoother on Performance. He said it was laggy and felt like 30 FPS in quality mode.

It would help a lot to know just which XBox it was on, so it's hard to put much stock in this assessment. At least we know the performance setting does make the game smoother on one variant of the XBox.

Not sure what console this person is on, but there was a bit of an odd post over at TGCT related to graphics:

"Anyone else noticing the massive drop in graphics when you switch to 60fps? It looks waaaay worse than 21 on performance mode. And that's on the next gen version. Really disappointing. Everything looks good up close on performance but the green in the distance is almost a total blue and it's genuinely tough to see the pin from the fairway on occasion."

Currently playing right now and I’m not blown yet. Tried Performance and Quality and Quality is a mode I won’t be going back to.

Not feeling the swing or the short game initially. Gotta give it more time I’m sure, but currently I’m lightweight regretting the early purchase.

yeah... NO.

i returned my copy today before the official 12am USA release.

every. single. person/team/group i versus today quit before 9 holes was finished.

YOU GET NOTHING WHEN THEY QUIT. no stats is bad enough, but not even leveling up of your character. just a wasted time and frustration.

i'll wait until it's on gamepass or severely on sale or patched.

Shot +12 @ TPC Boston. Just ok for the first round it the gate.

I played through 2 full careers on 2K21 and it is definitely a different game and not 2K21.5. Gonna take some serious grinding in this one to get the better gear because the opening gear is garbage.

I find it hard to believe they didn’t see this in the preview build. Especially when they had access to the myplayer. Maybe they had good conscience to say something in the end. I’m not buying the fact “no one knew about this” PR line.

As the game is currently, I will NOT be buying it.
So disappointed in this launch. It’s a buggy mess and those golf balls will kill society play especially TGCTOURS.
They better fix this game pronto

Here's an Xbox Series X Gameplay + FPS Test

One of the most horrifying videos I've ever seen as a gamer! It makes it seem that the game has taken a step back in the frame rate department. I wish I knew exactly what they were doing to put the game in performance mode. Are they just reducing object detail or reducing the graphics to 1440 or possibly 1080p?

I'll take it in the shorts and play the game in performance mode in order to get 60 FPS. I just can't believe that the Series X can't run this game at 60 FPS in 4K!?

I also learned from this that they stripped out a lot of options from the graphics setting menu. No more AA choices, no vsync setting options, no SSAO choice, no Depth of Field choice, no bloom setting.... yeeeesh!

First thing I did was go to the graphics setting to make changes to the above and quickly found out that those settings no longer exist.

Oddly enough, Bubba Watson and Harold Varner III are still playable pros in 2K23.
