But you're right...the way this game plays, the ball physics, mechanics, etc. make this this most refined golf sim we've ever had. Put this in an updated engine and add some real depth to career mode and it could be even better than anything EA is going to release in April.

If EA was not releasing a game (or if it plays poorly), and 2k never release another version, I can see myself still playing this game 5 years from now with my friend.

Re: PGA TOUR 2K23 Impressions Thread

My biggest gripes about 2K23 are the lack of things to do (career mode is hollow, etc.) and that the servers are pretty bad. Ranked matchmaking is a fun diversion, but it's frustrating to be kicked out of it fairly consistently, and then lose rank points due to the server booting you out.

But will always enjoy 2K for its solid game play and the course creator. I became totally enamored with the world of golf course architecture thanks to this series of games. Building a course from scratch and seeing others play it provides a lot of satisfaction and is such a cool thing I had not experienced in many other sports games before.

I also have to admit...HB/2K have supported 2K23 post-launch better than any of their previous entries. Patches have fixed things...sad to say it, but that's a big improvement from the past. Quite a few new courses have come, and are still on the way (like Pinehurst No. 2!). Lots of new gear/clothes added...the clubhouse passes are kind of silly, but even if you don't buy them, there's still new stuff in the pro shop fairly regularly. And they have added stuff to the course designer, too, which was a surprise...plus, they said more course creation assets will be on the way as well!

Also...a new update was sent out for 2K23 this morning? Update 1.11?

Have not seen any patch notes or updates about it.

I'm using career mode. Regarding rivals am I correct that the apparel/clubs are only cosmetic and to not add to my ability? They only way to increase ability after level 50 is fitting clubs - is that right?

The reason I ask is because I'm not seeing a benefit to rivals. Seems like the fittings are as good or better without rivals.

Apparel and clubs in the game are 100% cosmetic. The only things that affect your player's attributes/performance are skills, fittings, and consumable golf balls. Once you reach Level 50, you will receive no further points to add to your skill selections. You can always reset your skills for 500 VC and set them up as you like, but you will not gain any further skill points.

Fittings are offered as random drops as you play the game in any mode. You get them after finishing rounds, basically, but there are ways to get them in career mode, too (I think rivals and sponsors do have fittings as rewards here and there).

The rivals are only there to provide some rewards, mostly cosmetic, as you play career mode. There are some cool things in there, like Tiger's Scotty Cameron putter for example, which are only available by defeating the rivals - they cannot be gained any other way. That said, once you defeat all the rivals the first time, you will go back thru them over and over again, gaining single rewards that are different than the ones you got the first time through. This could be 100 VC, a fitting, a sleeve of consumable golf balls, etc.

To sum it up, skills, fittings, and consumable golf balls are the only things you can use to increase/change your player's attributes and performance. The rivals in career provide mostly cosmetic rewards, like clubs, clothes, and shoes. Once you defeat all rivals in career mode, you do go back through them and can gain other types of rewards.

I've been trying out Ranked 1v1 matchmaking, and it's actually a lot of fun. It certainly adds more depth to playing a live person one on one. It's more fun for me than career mode, that's for sure.

The only problem is my tempo is so off for some reason this weekend...I'm 2-7 haha. Nothing like seeing your name in 33,549 place lol. I do like this mode though, it's pretty cool.

I like it, too! Match play against another opponent is a lot of fun.

Tempo, to me, seems different when playing in a ranked match, as well. And the servers can be a pain. I have lost a decent amount of ranking points due to disconnects that happen pretty frequently. Weekends are the worst.

I know you've mentioned the disconnects and dropouts before, I've never had that, but I must admit the tempo seems "harder" to be consistent in Ranked play. Hopefully it's not random. It can't be, look at all of the guys who are like 122-20. Ridiculous to be that good at this game.

Is there a time of day that's best for finding an opponent in ranked matchmaking? Is it when Europe is awake? Because right now it's 8:30 pacific, 11:30 eastern, and it's finding literally no one lol.

That's odd, I have always been able to find matches, especially now with cross play.

Are you on Playstation? Because if you are, you need to turn cross play to On in the Social settings if you haven't.

I figured it out. It was because I wasn't on the latest update. I downloaded that and it was fine.

I just looked in career mode at the list of courses you can now swap into events, since we've had several more added recently. The Finau course, Wilderness Peak, and the MasterCard-sponsored track are in there.

To my surprise, Torrey Pine South has been added...previously, only Torrey North was part of the swappable list. Also, Pebble Beach is on there, which was a real shock!

This means that we can now kind of make a "real" US Open (the Northwest Open) in career mode, with either Torrey South or Pebble hosting the event. Nice little update there!

The game was unstable at launch and it has only gotten worse for me with every patch and update. I get multiple freezes and crashes every single day now. I have already gotten my money out of this game and like it a lot when it works but I don't think I will put up with this with another release.
