Depends on what you mean. Lol When I first signed up with free trial I was using a Xbox 360 controller. Not really recommend but I still drove better then some of the morons in the rookie class. Lol I've since upgraded to a Logitech Driving Force GT and now a Logitech G27.

IRacing unlike most other games is based off license level. So even though you may want to run the NASCAR Cup cars, you can't till your at least a C license. But license requirements is easily found on iRacings site. As for cars and tracks,it can get pricey especially for starting out but really if you buy in bulks of 3 or 6 and just the content needed for upcoming races, it's not to bad.

I can't speak for being a newbie as things were much different in 2008 when I joined, but there's always new people joining iRacing and very few people have any problems.

As for how it works, you have an iRating, a safety rating, and a license class.

Your iRating starts at ~1200 (I'm unsure of the exact number), and goes up and down depending on where you finish your races and what the iRating of the other drivers in your race are. The races have "splits" which is based on the number of cars allowed by iRacing in each race. So if they have it set for a max of 30 cars, and 61 cars sign up, you'll end up with one race of 21 cars and two races of 20. Those splits are based on iRating, so if you've registered for that race and are ranked from 1-21 out of the 61 drivers registered you'll be in the first split, 22-41 in the second split, and 42-61 in the third. This is so people with similar iRatings, which means they're generally close in speed/race skill, end up in the same races.

Your safety rating is based on incidents (counted like 1x, 2x, 4x). You get a 1x for going outside the iRacing defined track limits, a 2x for spinning, loosing control of your car, or bouncing of a wall too hard, and a 4x for hitting another car too hard. They also have a 0x which happens if you just barely touch a wall or another car. The safety rating is calculated based on corners per incident (CPI), so if you drive 1000 corners and only have 1x worth of incident, your safety rating will be much higher than if you drive 1000 corners and have 100x worth of incidents.

Your license level is based on your safety rating and if you've met your minimum participation requirements (MPR). Seasons are 12 weeks long, and you have to do 4 official races (2 at the rookie level) or 4 official time trials to meet your MPR. A race is official when the race meets the minimum number of cars (which I think varies based on series). So when you sign up for a street stock (the rookie oval car) race, and 9 other people are in there with you, that race will be official. You then have to complete a certain percentage of the race laps in order for it to be official for you MPR.

Once you get reach your MPR, you just need to get your safety rating over 3.0 by the end of the season in order to be promoted to the next license class. You'll start at rookie 2.5, so if you hit rookie 3.0, you'll get promoted to D class. Your safety rating drops by 1.0 with each movement up the license ladder, so you'll go from rookie 3.0 to D 2.0. You can also do what's known as fast tracking where if you've met your MPR and get your safety rating over 4.0, you get promoted in season.

I think that covers many of the basics, although I probably missed some stuff and messed something up somewhere. If anyone else has comments on what I've written, please say something. I know it's probably confusing, but once you sign up and start using iRacing it'll make more sense. If you have any questions just ask and I'll try to clarify things.

Yeah, I noticed that when looking at the results. Wish I hadn't had so much damage, looks like I would have ended up with a nice finish.

I was looking at the schedule and realized there's a ton of 1.5 mile tracks next season and I'm actually looking forward to them. Kind of funny since I know everyone hates those, but I'm looking forward to some wider tracks after what the schedule has been like over the last 5 weeks since I joined.

Just did an Xfinity race at Road America. Started third, finished sixth as the #8. Pretty ugly race for me. I don't have much practice with this combo plus I don't like RA to begin with and it showed. I did lower some of my graphics settings and recorded it, so once that's upload to YouTube I'll be posting it here for those of you who want to cringe at my driving.

Well, I did a Skippy race and didn't die, so that's good. I almost got my SR back up to B 2.0, which is nice, because I don't want to fall down to a C license this offseason after nuking my SR with some ridiculous GT1 races early this season. It was a fun drive, though I was pretty much in my own bubble in 4th place for the duration of the race, so there was not really any "racing" for me to do.

I hadn't ever ran Oran Park before (I had to buy it), but it's a fun track with a lot of off-camber turns that make the Skippy fun. I bet it would be miserable in some of the faster cars, however.

I used Chandler's baseline setup (available on the forums) for the setup, with no changes.

That's the first road race I've done in a couple months, I believe.

I saw you practicing and almost joined, but remembered I don't own Oran Park and I told myself I won't be purchasing any road content unless I start road racing again. Guessing I'll pick up Nurburgring when it's released, but that's probably going to be at least another 3 months.

Ugh. I feel like I've completely forgot how to race. One race in particular I did the Indy car Phoenix race and on lap 2 I thought I cleared another driver I was passing, drifted up but he was still there. We bounced off rather other and the caution came out. I didn't pit , I thought my contact was severe enough so stays out and on the restart went into turn 1 and just lost the rear end. All afternoon it was stupid crap like that. Ugh

                    Re: iRacing after 2+ years

I've attempted 3 races at Iowa in the modified and 3 times I've gotten caught up in someone else's accident. Tuesday night, someone overdrove it and spun out right in font of me and I had nowhere to go. On Thursday night, two guys were racing ahead of me and the outside car just turned into the inside car. Again, nowhere to go. And last night, I was passing a guy for 4th or 5th place. He was running high and just put it into the wall. Bounced off, took me with him.

I have the car setup pretty well. I can get out of 4 great, but it gets bad loose out of 2 after about 10-15 laps. I can make it last 20-25 laps until I have to pit, but I lose a ton of time. I'll keep messing with it. A guy that keeps winding up in my split is able to run 23.2's pretty easily so I won't be able to beat him. Some how he can drive it into the turns a lot further than me. Maybe I'll try to run his line and tweak the setup from there.

On the bright side, despite going 3/3 in other people's wrecks, I finally made it to the B license. Iowa was so much better for SR than Michigan. I can get caught up in a wreck, still run 80-90% of the laps at Iowa and gain some SR. At Michigan, I lost 0.05 or more every bad race I had.

I think everybody goes through that once in awhile. It can be tough, but I always just try to clear my mind of anything that's happened recently and then go out there and do whatever I can to run a clean race, even if that means letting guys pass me without a fight.

Nice. I know you've said you're probably letting your subscription lapse, but now you can get that up above 4.0 and run some more Gen6 races.

As for me, I did a truck race last night. Started third, finished sixth. There's some decent footage of me trying to catch and pass sixth place, then I tried to chase down fifth but didn't get there at the end. Can't wait to run the Trucks at Watkins Glen next season.

Got everything re-arranged now since I have the Oculus Rift, just waiting for iRacing to update their SDK so I can use it in the sim.

My plan right now is I might buy another month in October and race at Charlotte, maybe buy Kansas and the Camaro so I can go for the A license and not have to worry about keeping the SR up as much if I have a bad race. With the Blue Jays playing well and I have sunday ticket again, we'll see what the schedule looks like.

Then I'll get one of the deals at Black Friday and buy a year or two and be good for awhile. I'm enjoying this too much. Just need a lot more practice in the Gen6 and want to work on open setups at this point I think, especially since Xfinity doesn't get treated the same as Cup with fixed and open. I'd like to quit sacrificing iRating for SR. I was a 1500+ and now I'm back in the 1000's.
