Re: Indy Series 2005

Is this game worth getting? I really want a good iopen-wheel racing game for XBox, whether it's Indy style or Formula 1.

Also, is this game just the IRL, or is it CART?

Well, I certainly think it is. The game is just IRL, so you'll only race on ovals. So if you're an F1 or CART fan, this game might not suit you.

But the driving and racing models are excellent -- classic Codemasters stuff.

            Hiya!

Sounds like you are working in a neat place.

Basically, I am just curious about how the game is?

From reading forums (mainly here) I got the impression that the last Indy Car Series game wasn't that good, but is also the only one available on XBox..

So that made me wonder.. Did you play the previous Indy Car Series game, and if yes, is the 2005 version an improvement over it?

Also, is the game fun? Project Gotham Racing 2 is a good game, but to me, it's slower paced, because you have to really slow down around turns.. Granted, I haven't mastered the game, and thus struggle through turns, but when compared to Need for Speed Underground, I find that I prefer that and the sense of speed over PGR2, just because it's faster. I am not sure where I am going with this comment, but I guess I'm just curious about whether the game is fun, or if it's more of a simulation (read, more like "work")?

And lastly (for now, heh), does the game get "old?" I've never played an Indy car game, and I think it would be a lot of fun to play one, but does it have any kind of staying power, that will make me want to keep playing it? Does the game "keep it fresh," or does it get old and repetetive with time? Granted, you are racing cars in an oval, but I think it's possible for that to be either exciting or boring depending on things like the AI of the other racers, and the "total package."

            Thanks for the reply.

I own Project Gotham Racing 2 and find that it's a good game, but I have trouble getting "into it" because it seems to be played too slow (which is realistic). IE, I can't go into a turn at a reasonable speed brake and powerslide around the corner. Last night I played Need for Speed Underground at a friends, and I just had so much more fun with it. The focus seems to be more on arcade play, as you can take turns at speeds that would generally roll a car, but it was more fun for that reason..

Regarding the Indy game, I am not sure what is ideal, and the most fun; because I've never played one before. The fact that you are racing around ovals changes the focus and way you approach a race, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I guess I am most interested in whether the game is fun and exciting to play, or if it is realistic to the point that it's not fun unless you are a master of all things Indy car racing.. Does that make sense?

I really rambled there, but generally, I'm just curious about how the game is, if it's fun, and if it's an improvement over the previous version, which seems to be considered a game that could use improvement (again, I haven't played, just going off user feedback).

            Thanks again.

With all due respect to the cats here, I think they're wrong. I played the hell out of IndyCar Series -- still do! -- and it's the best console oval racing game I've played in terms of realism. Yeah, it's not the prettiest game in the world, and it's all ovals. That turns a lot of the "Ridge Racer-Need For Speed" crowd off, but frankly, they're idiots for expecting something other than a realistic oval-racing game from an officially licensed IRL title.

                  >>>So that made me wonder.. Did you play the previous Indy Car Series game, and if yes, is the 2005 version an improvement over it?<<<

Again, the original ICS was a fine game. But ICS 2005 corrects many of its flaws and adds Xbox Live play, too. There's a much better oversteer model in ICS 2005, rear-view mirrors have been added, qualifying is much difficult, weight jacker adjustments have a much more realistic effect, graphics are improved, default setups are better, etc.

                  >>>Also, is the game fun? Project Gotham Racing 2 is a good game, but to me, it's slower paced, because you have to really slow down around turns.. In all honesty, if you're a Burnout-Need For Speed kind of racing gamer, you probably won't like IndyCar Series. It's much more of a sim and requires an even more deft touch than PGR 2. I'm not trying to tell you not to buy the game, but you sound like a candidate for a rental. Hate to see you spend your jack -- even if the game is only $20 new -- on something that might not be a good match for you.

                  >>>And lastly (for now, heh), does the game get "old?" The AI of ICS and ICS 2005 beta is superb. You are slicing and dicing all the time, especially on the shorter tracks, and you need to stay alert. I also think Xbox Live play will give this title a ton of replay value. But if you're the kind of guy who will tire of racing on ovals, there's nothing ICS 2005 will do to change your mind. It's an oval-racing game, plain and simple.

                  >>>Thanks for the reply.<<<

I am not sure where I am going with this comment, but I guess I'm just curious about whether the game is fun, or if it's more of a simulation (read, more like "work")?<<<

Granted, you are racing cars in an oval, but I think it's possible for that to be either exciting or boring depending on things like the AI of the other racers, and the "total package."<<<

The AI of ICS and ICS 2005 beta is superb.

Thanks for the questions! Feel free to toss any follow-ups my way.

                      Take care,

                        pk500, thanks for the reply!

Regarding Project Gotham Racing 2, it's not that I dislike it, but instead that I am just bad at it.. I never really mastered cornering, and thus end up winging races, sometimes turning well and others clipping the wall... The game is really good, but the tracks seem kind of "tight" and the turns very sharp.

Again, the reason I have trouble in the game is beacuse I don't consider myself to be good at handling the cars.. I doubt it's the game, but instead my lack of skill.

Regarding Indy Series.. I don't mind driving around in ovals at all, and I am willing, even look forward to, a simulation experisnce, but for some reason PGR2 doesn't "click" for me yet. I'm not really sure what it is.. I like simulation racers a lot, and I also like arcade racers.. But it's something about PGR2 at this point that I just don't jive with. The game is superb, but maybe the courses are too narrow and windy for me.. I'm just not sure.

I guess I prefer more speed and openness to tight turns that need to be taken at 15 mph. I am a big fan of the Need for Speed games, and just rented Ralli Sport Challenge 2, but I also want to give a true simulation a serious shot, because I feel I am missing out otherwise.

I really appreciate the response, and am going to think about the game more, and also some questions I may have about it, so I will likely be posting back here when I come up with some more.

                        Thanks again!

Well, if you like speed, bro, you'll be on the gas at 225-230 almost the entire race at Indy outside of cautions and pit stops, so maybe ICS 2005 is your game!
