Re: Picking up a Gamester Race Pac tonight.

Ok. I bought the Race Pac on Friday night and played multiple race games for a total of 4-5 hours straight! I cannot believe how good this wheel/seat combo is for only $99.

For the Forza Demo: It performs flawlessly. I love racing in the F1 Ferrari's. Hitting 14K rpm is a blast.
For TOCA 2: AWESOME! Perfect feel in all races. Especially in the Seat Leon Coupé!
Project Gotham 2: Works flawlessly as well.
Burnout 3: Do I have to repeat myself.

Pretty sturdy construction overall. The manufacturer seems to not have left any detail out. It has a good grips behind the wheel. It has an excellent turning radius. The feedback does not feel cheap. The pedals has a great feel that puts you in touch with breaking and accelerating. There are even some little features that I like very much about the unit: a slot for the XBL headset that is in just the right place, the ability to adjust the wheel sensitivity on the fly, the ability use a pseudo-cruise control via the "accelerator lock" button, rubber feet and carpet spikes to keep the unit planted, and the ability to adjust to my height (5' 11").

This is quite easily the best $99 I've spent towards the racing genre. --10/10

It was a stupid choice, but maybe there is a technical reason why it couldn't be done. I was all excited to use it with LeMans 24 hours and F355, but it just doesn't work. I did play Outlaws, and it ran OK, but still not what it should be. It's a shame, because it really leaves out PS2 gamers. To be honest I can't see myself using it for my PS2 again.

That said, it does work great for Xbox, and there are more than enough games on it to keep me busy, so I'm still very happy with my purchase.
Thanks for the explanation. I wouldn't be surprised of some enterprising individual doesn't come up with a work around to allow the pedals to work with these PS2 games. Even if it doesn't happen, the Race Pac would have seen 80% of its duty on my XBox.

              Burnwood,

Thanks for your thoughts on your recent purchase of the Rack Pac! Sounds like what the doctor ordered for me. You know what else I would really be interested in with the Race Pac? NASCAR Heat 2002! I have Dirt to Daytona for the PS2, and if the NASCAR Cup mode of D2D is about what the stock car racing is like in NH 2002, I'd think the Race Pac would work great with it!

How much room does it take up?

As for Forza Motorsport, is the game at all driveable w/o a wheel or not? I would love to get this, but I just need to come up with some resources sometime before Forza. How close does it put you in the action of the game; does it feel authentic like you're actually out there on the track?

It depends on your height, but expect a space about 2 feet wide and 5 feet long.

I think it helps my immersion in a game a lot. I mean, what better for a racing game than a steering wheel in your hands? Forza is certainly playable without a wheel, but the feel and control I've gotten with the Race Pac makes it a whole new game. Now if Forza only had a cockpit or hood cam I''d be all set!

I agree. The Race Pac doesn't take up much space at all. It helps me a great deal with the immersion but I do know of gamers who struggle with anything other than a controller so even the best racing wheel will not help everyone.

To answer your question, "...does it feel authentic like you're actually out there on the track?" I take it you mean in the context of gaming and not a literal feeling of being on the track. Yes, it's pretty darn close to the real thing although it has vibration not true force feedback. But it doesn't feel cheap and it doesn't have that cheap rattle feeling like a Mad Catz wheel.

IMO it's the best thing for TOCA 2 because of the cockpit views in the game. Most games just give you the view of the street with the gauges viewable but TOCA gives you a more realistic view of driving behind the wheel.

It's too bad we can't figure out a way to incorporate Jim Bodin's active cockpit camera for the XBox version of TOCA 2. I have installed it on the PC version and it breathes even more live into the simulation. Your view turns as the driver's head would if the camera were in his eyes. You're not always locked into a straight ahead view. For example, if you're making a sharp right hairpin turn, the view pans to the right, breaking its lock on the centerline of the car, as a driver would do in real life. It's incredibly lifelike... almost spooky at first!

Couple that with the Race Pac and you'd be on your way to race sime heaven!
